Farm fresh eggs: good to bad ratio

We received a gift of 30 eggs from a single man with too many chickens to eat all the eggs they produce.

Of the 30, only 17 were good via the water test method.

Is this a normal ratio? I'd like to pay him in the future, but would need to gauge good/bad ratios to offer him a fair price, while also factoring the price per egg risk with bad ones.

This would be my assumption, when getting them from a friend of mine from time to time, they all are good.

Open the ones that don't pass the water test method and see if they're good. If not, it's pretty obvious. I've had pretty good luck with even eggs that fail that test be just fine. I had one bad one though and I didn't find out until I cracked it into a hot pan and it was black.... needless to say, I wish I hadn't discovered that it was rotten as it hit the hot pan. [Puke]

I've eaten store-bought eggs months past the expiration. Your success rate will rapidly plummet the further away from that date you get however, obviously.

I have never had a bad egg from my hens Though we eat Enough that the oldest are 5-6 weeks old at most. We refrigerate unwashed

One thing I learned from my mom at a young age was to always crack my eggs into a bowl, never into the skillet - to avoid surprises.....
