View Full Version : Labor Day Snow Storm
Get ready! It rolls in Monday at sunset. Classic upslope with up to 2" of moisture. The last hummingbirds will not be amused.
[*=left]Lower Elevations: Heavy wet snow may cause significant tree damage and power outages, particularly in the western suburbs and Boulder where up to 8″ of snow could accumulate on fully leafed-out trees. Roadways should remain largely just wet, except in the absolute heaviest bursts of snow where some slush will be possible Tuesday morning and afternoon. Temperatures will remain right around freezing during the day Tuesday, then fall into the mid to upper 20?s Tuesday night. These sub-freezing temperatures will bring an end to the growing season in most areas and obliterate existing record low temperatures for the date. As mentioned earlier, make the necessary preparations with any outdoor plants. The lasting impacts on our vegetation may not fully be realized until next spring.
[*=left]Foothills & Mountains: 7 to 15″ of snow in the higher elevations will be devastating to leafed trees and may cause power outages. Fortunately most of the trees in these locations are of course evergreens. Temperatures plummet into the 20?s during the day Tuesday and into the teens Tuesday night. The aspens trees are certainly going to be impacted with limited or no fall color display due to the rock-hard freeze.
Moisture is much needed to help with the fires.

I have to run the generator for a little while tomorrow to be sure we're good to go. These early storms are the worst. 85 up here today. 17 on Tuesday. Incredible.

It just occurred to me moments ago that I better get my camper winterized tomorrow. Wasn't expecting to do that this early...

Just shut the water off, drain the line and run it until it clears the water out of the unit. It will be hot enough to run it again later.

Don't forget to winterize sprinkler systems and remove any hoses from faucets. Frozen pipes cause a real mess.
Hope it has a serious impact on the Cameron Peak Fire!

You're assuming the grid will be operating this time next year.

So you're saying there will be a "next year"? Man, you are an optimist.

I used to have hummingbirds visit my window feeder every 10-15 minutes. Haven't seen one in nearly 2 weeks. I think they sensed an early change of seasons and headed south already. Took a drive out west along 24 and saw a small grove of aspens that had already gone fully gold.

Hoses for sure. But sprinklers I am going to wait on. 1 day will not freeze the ground.

Figured put how to winterize the camper and got the hoses picked up. Temp dropping pretty fast and wind up out here.
Yep. Took the trash out for collection a little bit ago. Windy and you can feel some humidity in the air.
Humidity is up over 50% from yesterday. At least at my place

Rain, and first power bump of the season. YAY!
I hate IREA with a passion.
I have two snow blowers to test out and then immediately sell.

you get the water heater tank, too? A lot of people forget to drain that.

I usually drain that after every trip, so the water doesn't get funky. Did end up with a quart of antifreeze or so in there due to a valve misunderstanding.

IREA is horrible my power always surges
Cooler temps and higher humidity alone can help with the wildfire fighting. Bring on the precip!

Always wanted a generator. Never bought one until I had to get IREA.
Bought almost 100yds of extension cord last week. Next is a bigass UPS and priority plugs.

The vast majority of hummingbirds fly south out of CO by the third week of August. Fewer than 5% of the Aug 1 birds are left on Sept 1. Migrant hummingbirds flying through the flatlands, both Front Range and West Slope will linger longer than those moving through the mountains. I think there has been an earlier movement this year due to the drought and the resulting lessened food resources. There are fewer insects and fewer nectar and pollen producing flowers which forces the birds to move on sooner.
At our place off the Peak to Peak we may have had a couple dozen birds today, mostly juvenile Broad-tails, one adult male Broad-tailed, and this morning I spotted a juvenile Calliope. In Palisade last week I had mostly juvenile Black-chinned, two adult female Black-chinned, and a few juvenile Rufous and Calliope.
At this time it's 42 degrees and raining lightly. The morning cold will be a challenge for the remaining juvie hummingbirds. I have a couple feeders out with snow shields to keep the ports clear, and others under eaves with lamps to prevent freezing. I don't think we can save the flowering plants from heavy wet snow and sub freezing temps.

As long as the wind isn't crazy to screw up a bunch of trees we're good. Dead silent now. Drizzling away.

The open space Prairie Dogs have been laying low.
Oh, wait, that might be due to downrange lead.
I only drained water from the RV and opened the low point drains that hang really low and like to freeze up. Kid is still living in it so it stays heated inside. Probably not even needed without a real hard freeze but we're done with it for the summer.
Got the snowblower out from the other side of the house and fired it up.
Leaving the sprinklers be. Disconnected the hoses.
Didn't have a chance to pull my genset from the truck as I'd also need to pull the hitch. If it gets ugly, I can move the truck and get power.

We got lots of thunder and lightening and 110# chicken on the bed trying to hide. Loudest thunder of the season.
Reba rages at the storm when outside and tries to hide from it when inside.

Just turned to snow here in wellington.
39 degrees, light rain, lots and lots of hummingbird s this morning.
"Good" air quality index this morning. I haven't seen that for quite some time. Looks like trees may be starting to ice up a bit. Will have to keep an eye on that tonight. Wet snow plus all that leaf area puts trees in jeopardy.
Could be some power issues if it gets nasty.

Was coming on to note that I'm finally starting to see some snowflakes and actually saw a hummer visit the window feeder. I pulled in the other feeder from the backyard thinking their season was over. There was just enough nectar in it to let a hummer feed but I didn't want it to freeze and damage the the ports.
I pulled the hoses off the outside faucets but the temps in C Springs aren't predicted to go low enough to pose any issues -- definitely not low enough or long enough to mess with buried pipe.

So I just need one of these "window feeders" you speak of to get hummers, huh?
I fired up the wood burner this a.m. for the first time. Since my wife works from home and she likes it warm. An easy way to get some brownie points. Was nice to have the smell of burned wood from a fire that I started, and not from a forest fire that some azz hat started, for a change.

Although this thread wasn?t really about actual snow, the timing couldn?t have been better.
I switched the thermostat from AC to heat before I left this morning so my poor wife wouldn?t freeze while she is working from home.
I switched the heat on last night. I knew I had an appointment to get to and having it chilly getting out from under the covers would be an invitation to be late.
Good sleeping weather this morning.
It was so hot yesterday that inside the house is measured @69F without any heat right now.
Just got a ride back from the dealership and noticed snow.
Last year I saw my first flock of humming birds...I was puttering around (watering) in the back yard and had a humming bird fly 5 feet from me...hover and look at me for 20 seconds, then fly up and join about 20+ other birds as they left for winter.
This year was, one day they were here, the next all gone. And it looks like they took the robins along for a ride.

Yep. Did the same thing. Getting out of bed this morning wasn't all that bad. I bundled up pretty heavy before I headed into work. Welcome to the bi-polar moods of Colorado.

My house seems to retain heat. I opened all the windows last night when it was <70 out. House continued to get warmer inside even with the windows opened because of the full day of 95deg heat. Shut them at bedtime.
It dropped below 40 at 3am. 33 out now. House is still 72. Will probably need the heat by dinner.
I fired up the wood stove for the first time this fall. Outdoor temp has remained around 27 degrees this morning and we've gotten about 3 inches of snow so far. Don't make me get out the snow shovel.

Any relief to the Cameron Peak Fire area?
Any relief to the Cameron Peak Fire area?
I'm hoping. Yesterday it jumped the lines and made a beeline towards my cousin's house. It's only 5 miles from it now. :(

It's snowing more heavily now. Went out to shovel the walks and the power went out. We did think ahead by grinding coffee for tomorrow and filling some buckets with water so we can flush. Our mountain water system requires electricity to pump and pressurize.
Same. Starting to actually look like snow now.

Starting to stick to the yards and trees here. Still havent had to turn on the heat or.pull the window AC units yet, hopefully won't have too.
About 5" so far. It's been a lot of effort keeping the hummingbird feeders functional: clearing ports, swapping for warm feeders. Also shaking off some of the aspen and fruit trees to avoid losing limbs.
64f inside our house without any heater on so far.
If it goes down to 62f, we will be turning it on.
It is amazing how the house can conserve (or retain) this much heat energy since yesterday.
Had to knock a lil snow off the apple tree by the driveway. Not much snow, but enuf to have the lower branches in the way for when the wife goes to work in the AM...

No snow here obviously. But when the front passed last night it went from 86 to 57 in less than an hour. Thunderstorms on and off with the front. This morning it's 48 with rain...got .44" rain since midnight.
It was still 68 in the house but I fired up the furnace just to test it...good to go for when it does get cold. I'll need the AC again after tomorrow.
I hope it rained all over those fires.
18 degrees in Leadville, maybe no colors this year.

We have about 4 inches down here west of Trinidad. Last night we had lightning and thunder snow. I wonder what 2020 is going to show us next, or should that question even be brought up?

If it goes down to 62f, we will be turning it on. Good lord, my wife is cold blooded and if our house gets down to about 67f, she will either turn on the gas fireplace, turn up the thermostat, or start a fire in the wood burner. Heck, at 70 she puts on extra cloths.
Still have two hummers hanging in at my house. Probably be mowing grass again come this weekend.

72f in here. At 69f, I get a SMS alert, at 67f, the space heater next to the bird cage kicks in. Bird looks pretty uncomfortable below that.
My wife is worried about the hummingbird s. She was changing out food several times yesterday to give the room temp food rather than the 34 degrees outside food. She has gone thru 25 lbs. of sugar for them this summer.82952
We have ten to twelve on the two feeders all day long.

This is why I'm willing to deal with 115? during the summer, perfect weather while CO is getting shat on with snow. We still have plenty of "hummers" here.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200910/b6a2b7a5e482e6adbb6ad47adb782352.jpg
