Friend of mine, not a huge gun person but she has handled them before is extremely late to the party and at the point of wanting a handgun for the house. Small preferred just due to her size even though I kinda want to push her towards a full size Canik or something. Budget for her is a concern, and would like to find something used better than a high point and I'll be just giving her a couple mags of ammo.

Hoping to find something $200-$300 ish. 1-2 mags.

I know Palmetto state armory had some surplus 9mm berettas in that price range not sure if its worth the gamble to her but with everything being inflated might be worth the risk.

Something like this is in her price range and size.

For non enthusiasts who don?t plan to carry it concealed on their person I?d steer them towards a revolver for the sake of simplicity but that?s just me.

Whats wrong with the hipoint?
Its Cheap, safe, shoots and serves as a anchor or bulging device when out of ammo.

ETA: Just wondering, I wouldn't own one but its a perfectly good.option for the budget minded

When you're wielding a YEET Cannon (https://www.hi-pointfirearms.com/hi-point-handguns/9mm-OGYC.php), who's going to mess with you?

What about a Makarov?

What about a Makarov?
Might be difficult for her to manipulate the slide, and Makarovs and their ammunition aren't 'cheap' like they used to be.

I was thinking something like a S&W SW9VE might fit the bill, but the heavy trigger probably wouldn't be great for her.

G2C is there. Step above the hi-point. Sure some "top-tier" operators will be by shortly to shit on it.

Buy a used revolver and call it good. 38 & 357 is still on shelves. Especially if she's

1: not a gun person

2: has no clue how to clear a FTF, FTE , stovepipe etc

3: OR, if it's one with an external safety. Remember to take it off Safe

4: D ALL THE ABOVE

I don't know why people who want to get someone who's not really a gun person. OR never fired one before, a semi-auto.

^^^This. Unless she is going to practice with it, spend couple hundred bucks more and get decent quality revolver.

I recently bought a alloy 1975 built Beretta 1951 from J&G. They are available from other sources, with three magazines and shipping to my FFL it was $ 455.00. You can find steel framed versions for less.
Nice solid pistol that has been reliable with about 100 reloads.
Racking the slide might be a issue. Tiny sights. It points well and the pistol can be cleared while the safety is engaged. Parts are available. Magazines are well built and easy to load.

For the price I could overlook the caliber.

Oh, I see how you are.

I recommend a revolver in post #3 and Kazoo comes along nine posts later and you give him all the glory.

You?re going on my list.

I wouldn?t count on a Christmas card this year.

Taurus gets pooped on for a reason.

I poop on them from personal experience with my first and only Taurus product years ago.

I do hear poor/cheap people praise the G2C as being just as good as the Glock 19 but I have my doubts.

Probably not as good as a g19, but I know at least 3 people with them, no complaints.

There multiple 9mm and 380 handguns on armslist under $300

Damage Factory posted on their FB today that they got some Taurus G2’s and G3’s for $299. Better not wait if she wants it. At this point you kind of have to take whatever you can get too.

I'm a little leary of messing with armslist/pawnshops. Trust people on here a lot more and now have some good reminders of options that wouldn't usually be on my radar.

Item #5 AMMO Figure with her doing some range time, then more range time. You're going to need at least 150 rds of ball ammo. Then 2 boxes of defensive ammo. 1 for home. 1 to run through the gun for function check and POI adjustments.

Did anyone besides RAY 1970 mention a revolver, 9 post later ;)

A lot have talked like it's a first time gun owner, but I said they've handled them in the past meaning somewhat familiar, just not like someone that regularly shooting. Most of the time I take the topic more seriously, but for the person in mind, I honestly don't see them going and shooting and it being lost in a closet as a forgotten wand against evil vs any serious readiness. Or I could be wrong but ammo past the first box and a mag of gold dots is on them. I'd be more heavily invested if it was spouse/family/inner circle of friends. Just felt obligated enough in the tangental relationship to go this far hunting for them.

That right there is all one needs,to validate buying a revolver

with that said. I'd take them shooting and see how they handle any malfunction, with a pistol.

Personally, if they can't clear a jam / issue at the range.. They sure as hell will not be able to, under duress.

But you're set on a cheap / low priced pistol. Go for it.

For just a bit more $ than $300, look at the Mossberg mc1sc or the near Mc2c. I have run the hell out of mc1sc with zero malfunctions. Very impressed with the gun for the $.

Moved to Hanguns because it doesn't need to be dominating the wanted section.
