View Full Version : Jeep falling off mountain

Jump to about 3 minutes then wait for the exciting part...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R5cLghSWGQ

Story claims the driver put the jeep into park and got out, with his GF and 2 dogs still in the jeep, to help another vehicle on the trail, and the jeep started rolling...

GF and dogs were ejected from the jeep. GF is in serious but stable condition, and dogs were ok.

That's been going around. A few months ago a YouTuber was here doing the trail in the afternoon and it started raining and basketball sized rocks were raining down the mountain. Then there was a big land slide and everyone got trapped on the trail for 3 hours until the road crew could show up with a front end loader.

With damage.

Some Jeep to be sure.......some of it is over here........some of it is over there....

There's also a video making the rounds of the crew doing maintenance this spring in a bull dozer. Watching that thing slide sideways on is metal tracks at the steps made me shiver.

The driver initially posted on FB looking for the two dogs that got ejected. They found the first dog that day, but took them a couple days to find the other one. I heard that the driver stopped the Jeep, set the parking brake and jumped out to help a fellow jeeper negotiate a switchback.

I have a JK, and the handbrakes have ALWAYS been complete crap on mine. Even after new brakes, it just doesn't hold. If I need my Jeep to not move, it'll be hand brake and left in first with engine dead.

This video is pretty much my worst nightmare.

I bet he put it in park, and set the brake, just like every ND on a firearm magically happened when the round teleported in from a 4th dimension because they know they unloaded it and set the safety.

Prayers for the GF.

There is a video from about 15 years ago of another Wrangler rolling over the edge. This guy's got very lucky though because that rig rolled in a curve (imagine rolling a parking cone) and stopped facing straight up hill after only about 2 rotations.

This is when people find out that their "comprehensive" auto policy doesn't cover "off road use".

Irving

Comprehensive means something else with respect to insurance policies, and the "comp" part does not cover this kind of accident. I've covered off-roading accidents and had my own covered as well. I'm sure some carriers have policy exclusions for off road stuff.

These are forrest service and county roads and covered by insurance. Off road use is prohibited in many areas across the state.

If I ever get out of mine, I turn it off, place in gear and parking brake engaged. And steer it uphill if it happens to roll.

Then before getting out, get off the brake pedal to make sure parking brake us engaged.

Yep! The mountain doesn't care what safety features or how badass you vehicle is.

WHANG! That's the word that happens when you say WHOA! and DANG! at the same time. When I saw the title I suspected Black Bear Pass was involved. That's an incredible road and some incredible mountains. I was surprised when it happened where it did. It seems a lot of "accidents" occur after the "scary" part when people get complacent. I wish everybody a full and speedy recovery.

The roll over from a few years ago happened because the guy was scared of the edge, so he went too far away from the drop off. His driver tires climbed the inside edge and he rolled over anyway. Seems like right in the middle is the safest bet on a pass like that.

About 15 yrs ago, I came pretty damn close to rolling off one of the switchbacks heading up to SantaFe Peak....

Had been up many times previously, but that time the trail/road started disintegrating underneath me. Trying to get back on solid ground made it worse, and was just getting ready to bail as it started to tip (only occupant, and no doors on)...

Fortunately, someone else (driver from other vehicle) jumped on my front bumper and provided enough weight to counterbalance and keep it from going over. Recovery involved tow-straps to vehicles in front and behind, and getting "yanked" back to stable ground...(then preemptively did the same thing to higher jeep to help traverse the bad spot coming down)...

Yes, I was there the day after with a group and he easily had 5 ft from the right side to the edge. His prints were still visible.

I wonder how come nothing exciting ever comes out of Red Cone.

Red cone has been well maintained and wide. I would also say a few of the obstacles at the beginning deter less experienced drivers.

The switchbacks on the 285 side of Webster Pass are far more dangerous and narrower than red cone.

We did a night run in October and once we broke above tree line there was a foot of fresh snow on top. We decided that the descent in fresh powder, and in the dark probably wasn't wise.

The descent off the back is a one-way. We just went back down the way we came in and didn't have to worry about cross traffic since it was night.

Not long after Red Cone opened one year, I went up with a group. Ahead of us was another group of three vehicles. Once they cleared the peak, we went up and hung out. We noticed they went only part way down the descent and stopped. After realizing they weren't going anywhere, we sent down a vehicle to find out what was going on, and if our group could get past them. Turns out they were there to rescue a vehicle which slid off the trail the previous fall/winter/year, and couldn't be rescued before snow closed down the trail. It slid off the trail and down the hill on the north side where it wasn't visible from the peak. They were successful; they had to repair a tie rod end (or something similar), and brought a fresh battery to install. It fired up and was driven back onto the trail and out.

That reminds me of my experience in summer 1996 or 1997 hiking in behind the Carnage Canyon area in Lefthand Canyon. I was walking along when I heard revving motor noises and "beep, beep, beep...". To my surprise, around the corner appears a flat bed wrecker backing-up the road. I follow him for a bit when he stops next to a wide spot. In the ravine below laid a 1995 Honda Passport that had barrel-rolled down the hill. Turns out the owner, earlier in the year, had driven back in there when things were a bit "soft". He pulled into the wide spot and parked, getting out of the vehicle to explore. While gone, his outside wheels collapsed the dirt beneath them and pitched the Passport down the hill. It wasn't a ball of mush like the JK shown above, but every body panel was deformed and windows busted. Even being that new, the tow truck operator said the insurance company had totaled it, and they were extracting it per Forest Service orders.

The most shocking thing was that it DID NOT have any bullet holes yet...

I got a laugh once at a group of teenagers in a very brand new looking Wrangler stalled out in the middle of a deep creek with water running up over the hood.

I imagine mom and dad were going to be a little upset with the kids for sucking enough water into the engine to kill it.

I saw a kind gentleman in a Tacoma who was going to winch them to dry land but I don?t know how they were going to get it towed back to civilization.

Never seen a vehicle tumbling down the side of a mountain though. I heard it?s more common than you would think up around Silverton and Ouray.

Irving
10-26-2020, 17:15
The very first trail I ever drove was Middle St Vraine and one of my buddies (an occasional poster on here) ran through the water on top fast enough to suck it into the intake and grenade the motor. We had to tow him out and he hitched a ride with me all the way down to Castle Rock.

We are definitely in an era where someone can watch a few Youtube videos from "influencers", and think themselves ready for any challenge. I had 10 years of off-road driving before even contemplating the Ouray/Telluride passes, plus a proper vehicle- NOT a cute ute.

You're right! I though it looked like a newish Cherokee too, but its a brand new Bronco.

No vehicle makes up for driver skill and experience.

[Edit to add from an online source]: The Bronco Sport rides on the same platform that underpins the compact Escape crossover, and every model has all-wheel drive.

So yes, still a cute ute. I am getting the new Bronco models confused.

I think we've always been dumb, it's just our products were not retard proof so people more often died from their stupidity. You used to hear about it from the old timers too....

."That was Frank, he had a really long pony tail, but he died when he was leaning over a running combine blade, his last words as he turned his head was "hey ghzlpfffff". I found his face in that wheat field over thar."

"That was Charlie, he tried to get grandma's old caddy up the pass near bear's crack, and when he got high centered on the bears dick, he musta' reved it hard cause we saw it come unlodged and that fucker got thrown clean through the winder and probably fell five hunnerd feet. Might have lived too if it wernt for him landing on top of a bear cub."

Read the sherifs post. Plenty on room to turn around at the sign. Hell it is a parking lot for thee waterfall and powerhouse

She was a dumbfvck and ignored thee clear signage that says to not enter a d the trail is one way down.

Not harsh at all when these dumbfvcks give even more reason to close trails.
