View Full Version : Different calibers in the AR platform?

Looking at a post Colorado Osprey did in the 6.5 Grendel thread about supporting the AR platform in any caliber, I got to thinking about how many different calibers I have in the AR platform and how many different things you can do with them. So what different calibers do you have?
Here are mine-
.17 Remington, for exploding sod rats
5.56 (of course!), for varmints and stopping the attack of vicious paper targets
6.5 Grendel, for long range coyote and antelope
.300 Fireball, originally for feral hogs
.458 SOCOM, for feral hogs after I saw the results!
One of these days I'm going to get a DTech .338 WSSM wildcat...and maybe a .25 WSSM to, just because.
And to think they started out as a simple, Evil Black Rifle.

Currently have....Some are uppers, some are complete guns:
17/223
6x45 (243/223)
6.8SPC
243WSSM (check out this hunting video with a supressed 243WSSM) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE5LlYqgcys
The above are Dtech uppers...mixed Shilen and SUM barrels
9mm
10mm
45ACP
and of course a couple 223/5.56's 16 Carbine, 20" Rifle, 16" Dissy and a 7.5" Pistol
It's addictive... I just wish I could have kept all the ones I have already had too.
I'm thinking my next will be another Dtech but in 30 OSSM.
Mike, aka Dtech loves the 25WSSM, but with the limited bullet selection that will work in the mag, I decided against it for me.

I have 9mm, .22, .22 (beltfed) and .50 (12.7x99), and 5.56.
The .50 is single-shot.

I think an integrally suppressed .45acp upper would be the stuff.

What? Nobody is copping to having a 300 Whisper? Man, If I get another AR in a caliber other than 5.56 or a pistol round, it's gonna be a 300 Whisper with a can.

A .300 Fireball is about the same as a Whisper, just has a thicker neck (made from reformed .223 brass). That was part of my original thought with my Fireball, put a can on it so the pigs wouldn't know what was whacking them. Even better with a nightscope on it, I could flat clean up some pigs.
I may still pursue this line of thought...
I am changing out one of my uppers and converting it to 6mm ar. thats using a 6mm barrel, a ar 7.62x39 bolt and a 6.8 mag. the cases will use 6.8 cases necked down to 6mm. can still use a regular lower and be able to pump out a very acurate 105 grain berger at very good velocities.

I had a .50 beowulf and now only have a 6.5 Grendel.
I'll probably pick up a .223 upper in the next year or so.

A ROCK RIVER 5.56 X45 Law Enforcement A SMITH & WESSON 5.45X39 UPPER , which I fire com-block,corrosive ammo,{2,1080 rds for $240.00 + $30.00 shipping } from R Guns. Can anybody tell me how to open up there com-bloc tin ,without using a hammer & chisel; when there sometimes supplied can opener does not work? I have (2) in 5.56 and (1) in .308. I've been thinking about building another either in 6.5 or .243...
Wow, serious addicts here! I'm just .223 and feel a little weird about it now :).

yep. Needle-nose vise-grips Snap them on to the tab with the handle pointing up and rotate. I've had to do it at the range with a leatherman once. That sucked ass, and not in a good way.

I am looking at a 300 blackout upper. I like the 7.62x40WT but it does not have the parts and ammo availability of the blackout.
