I was curious what makes him think his rifle is so special and especially the claim it's the thickest barrel available. So I watched a YouTube video of him explaining it. I think I got dumber by watching him show his gun.
He said his barrel is .950". By my account that makes it just a teeny tiny bit bigger than a standard bull barrel but just enough so that standard gas blocks won't work I guess. He said his barrel "beats Ruger, Remington and Winchester...all the others on the market." Does Winchester make AR's...oh doesn't matter. His fat barrel makes his gun more accurate.
Oh, and he's using a chrome BCG. Wow!!! Best money can buy. (As he points to the bolt face and says look, there's the firing pin, which obviously can't be seen). Look how nice it slides in there!
Then he shot it on full auto outside the door to his shop, without sights, right after saying it was 7.62 but correcting himself to say it's .223/5.56. He hit 3/4 bowling pins guys! Which is pretty darn good because hitting anything with a machine gun is super hard. He said that. His gun is THAT accurate.
I'm going to order one now.

Seems like he's clearly closed when they shot that, and anyone on his private property while he's closed kind of has it coming. Big dirt berm (dirt mountains) behind his target setup.
I'm not saying he's a gem among gents, but I don't see any safety issues in this clip.
The area to the left of the dirt berm, iirc, is a paintball park and to the right would be pasture, unless he's reconfigured the place since I was there last. There are clearly no customers on the paintball range, meaning it was probably shot on a Monday (closed on Mondays).
Who are the folks in the shop that he invites out to watch him shoot? They seem like customers rather than employees.

Because holding a rifle between your legs, pointed perpendicular to the target area, is clearly the preferred method of controlling a rifle.
I'm sure if we all had video of each of us left and right someone could pick it apart and find something we're all doing.
E.g. when I mindlessly pick my nose with the barrel of a Ruger-22, I'm sure someone here would have a comment about it :/ "Get your bang straw out of your booger maker" or some such thing.
Then again though, none of the rest of us have ever had a spouse killed by flashy-flashy-'splody stuff on the range, either. So, there is that.
I try to be extra careful when I'm on the news.

At a guess, members of the crew interviewing him? And probably an employee or two. Maybe COVID has changed the dynamic, but his parking lot was almost always full when I was out there, and he was actually open - with a crowds of paintballers, crews of motocross riders, and a full or nearly-full firing range.

The second time lasted fewer than 20 minutes. -- after the RSO *watched* the people at the station next to us muzzle us with their weapons for a 3rd time -- I left. I've never been back. I will not go back.

That's like blaming the victim for being hit by a drunk driver.
To be clear, his wife was killed by a special-effects pyrotechnic gone wrong during taping of their television show. Dragonman was not the person who rigged or detonated the pyro, that was the TV crew.
There are legit complaints about aspects of Mel Bernstein's business and attitude, but his wife's death is not among them, IMO.

He loves blabbing to the media every chance he gets.... and when they DO stick a microphone in his face, just about everything he says gives gun owners a bad name and/or makes us all look like crazies. He LOVES the attention and will quickly throw you and your rights under the bus for a little fame.
The fact that his range is incredibly unsafe is a separate issue. I have been to the range several times and nearly every time I was flagged with a loaded weapon and the range officer did nothing or took very minimal action to correct the behavior. The last time I was there was in 2014 and somebody standing 3ft behind a range officer had a Negligent Discharge at the pistol range WHILE EVERYONE WAS DOWNRANGE. The person was not kicked off the range, and the RO seemed to spend a minute or two investigating "why the gun fired" while the range was cold... and didn't put much attention into "why an individual violated several range safety rules and pulled the trigger on their firearm while the range was cold". Myself and about half of the others there on the range immediately packed up our stuff and left.

Because none of us want any potential ally shut down, and regardless, we believe in the actual rights he seems to only believe in when financially advantageous for him. To negatively impact him in the way you said is a Pyrrhic victory.
It would be better for him to remove his head from his own ass and realize he has a national platform to impact actual change, along with policing his range so that it's safer.
Mel has such great potential for vision and diversifying a local attraction, as he has done. I don't think anyone can fault him for his forethought and business sense or the fact that he has realized mechanisms to finance his dreams and hobbies.
But it's like watching a sculptor make something amazing and utilitarian, only to add a massive dick to it at the end.
