Have the wifes old juke that's being used as a beater this winter and maybe next. Trying to be a cheap ass and not spend $350 on a new set of snow tires when that's 10% of the value of the car and hopefully only 1-2 seasons.

Is there a reasonable shot at buying used tires anywhere that arnt in the last 20% of the life of the tire?

Discount, from what they say, have stringent standards before they sell a used tire.

I've done used tires many times, but they were usually "Take offs" where someone was trading up tires / wheels on a new car.

I've heard with snow tires, that Blizzaks (and a few other "special" snow tires) only have their maximum ice traction compound for the first 40% of treadware, then they are basically just standard snow tires.

I'd verify any used tires I get don't have any punctures or sidewall damage, have decent treadlife left (At least 6/32"), have pretty even wear across the tire, and be fairly even wear from tire to tire (within 2/32" of each other).

All the time, both from tire shops (BigO, Discount) and from individuals.

Just learn how to read date codes and what to look for (cracks, dry rot, etc) and you'll be good.

I have bought 2 sets of winters for the family cars. Both came with rims and were silly cheap compared to getting a new set, like $50 for rim and $50 for tire. Look on CL, buy a reputable brand, make sure no cracks and that the year on the tire is not old.

Fifteen inch wheels may or may not fit. Sometimes vehicles have 17, 18, or whatever wheels not just for looks but to clear the brake system components.

Also, in my youth I would always buy takeoffs from my local tire shop. Last set was bought off a buddy?s neighbor. He bought a new truck and at about 1,200 miles he did a lift kit and bigger wheels and tires. I think I gave him $150 for the full set of wheels and tires because he wouldn?t be using them and they were taking up space in his garage.

I'm another tight ass. I run two sets of wheels, one set for summer tires and the other for winter, and just last year I bought my first brand new set of tires in like, forever just because I couldn't find a good used set at the time. Good deals are pretty easy to find on CL.

I bought some used tires for my car while a broke-ass college student in the 90's. I also have some retreads on my truck- 33x12.50R16.5 is kinda an odd size.

Get the mounting costs and tire disposal fees figured out beforehand.

Aren't there some boys downtown that fulfill special wheel and tire orders?

I put a brand new set of expensive tires on my wifes car.
Once
A week later she drove into a culvert end due to "Driving with Cranial Rectalitis" and ripped out the sidewalls of 2 of them.

Craigslist skins henceforth.

I buy both new and used.

It really depends on how common the size is your are looking for but $350 for a brand new set doesn’t seem bad at all. That’s not even one tire on my bro-dozer Duramax lol.

I have gotten a couple sets of Craigslist. I found a set of wheels and snow tires for my wife’s car for $500, that had tons of tread left. She used them for 2 or 3 seasons with no problems.

If you keep your eye out, you can find sets for a fraction of what you would buy new that are barely used. If the list what they paid at discount and want 90% of that, keep looking.

I still have these, $50 a tire is well below the $350 a tire you're worried about. These might be a weird size or something though. Might want to check how difficult it would be to find the fourth tire. Is the Juke AWD?

They won't fit, already took a look.

Couple inches taller, more of a full suv/ light truck tire i gather, not a lot of room in juke wheel well.

I have bought several sets of used tires for my trucks. Most of them came on rims so I didnt even have to pay for mounting. The price of tires and rims was usually well under what I would have purchased tires for. I picked up a set here that stayed on my truck for two years, around 30k miles. Well worth the $800 I paid for them. The truck is a ram 2500, so tires are usually pretty high.

When times are tough, I have bought used tires. You save some money, but then every year or so you have to be looking for tires. Go Green on Federal and Oxford will mount them no problem. They also repair tires that say discount won't fix.

Most recent set of tires I got through a connection and they are used with less then 10 miles on them. They were installed and customer said they rubbed so they were returned. There are some great deals out there.

You know your vehicle only touches the ground in 4 spots right? Best if those are new. 2 most important components of a vehicle are brakes and tires. The risk is not worth the extra cash in your pocket.

Irving

I'd use that argument for reasons not to buy Chinese knock off tires before buying used tires though.

You might not have left the roadway like I did on used tires. A lot cheaper to buy new tires than a new car...

Pep Boys tires back in the day for me. Delaminated the thread on a new tire. Stopped buying no name stuff after that.

Man is right though folks. As much as we like to save on tires and buy ammo there are severe risks. Hell even the best summer performance tires are crap in the winter. Or the 60k mike tires may look great even after 5 years but realize you are ridding on hockey pucks that will hydroplane on a puddle or fail to stop in a snow dusting.

Like I said. Buy used but buy a good brand and make sure the rubber is not old. Tires are cheap compared to a hospital deductible.

I recently bought a set of used wheels and tires for my 2002 2wd Tundra. The old man I bought the truck from had the cheapest tires Big O sells installed and they were basically bald. The wheels were steel with plastic hubcaps. I was able to find some really nice takeoff wheels from a Tacoma and a set of Michelins with about 90% tread remaining. The total cost was about $400 after selling my crap tires and steel wheels to some guy for $80. The used Michelins were calendar old, but had been stored inside and covered, so they weren?t dried out. I can?t believe how much better the truck drives.

There is a shop in Brighton just east of the round about intersection of Hwy 85 and Bridge Street who installed the tires on the wheels for $15/ea.

Back in 2013 I wanted to put a set of FJ Cruiser steel wheels on my 4runner. Found a set locally and they already had BFG MTs on them. I don't really like MTs but I'm also cheap so I just put them on with the BFGs. I kept my stock wheels that had Cooper M&S tires on them. Ran the BFGs all Summer long, to include when pulling our teardrop trailer, then in November I swapped the Coopers back on. Did that for 2 years before I finally bought new tires for the FJC wheels. Sold the old BFGs (they still had a good amount of treat on them), the Coopers and the stock alloy wheels to offset the cost of the wheels and tires.

I actually got 5 wheels in that deal so I bought 4 new BFG AT KO's and one used tire for the spare. I sold the 4runner that way in 2015.

So yes, I have run used tires in the past. Lots of people swap out tires when they get a new truck or SUV and the "old" tires barely have any wear on them. A good visual check of the tire to make sure it's got good tread and no dry rot and they'll likely be fine.

However, having said all that, I'm more likely to SELL tires than to buy them used. I'm about to put a new set of tires on my F-150, and when I do I'll make sure to tell the tire shop that I want my old tires back, which I'll sell on FB Marketplace or CL.

But depending on the circumstances (like a car that I intend to sell soon anyway) I could see buying a set of used tires for half the cost of new ones.
