I thought about posting this in DYI but that seemed reserved for more practical maters... Anyway I was vacuuming up some sawdust and looked into the machine. What do you know... There's gunpowder in there too. I think I'll finish cleaning up and see what kind of chestnuts I can roast...

Pretty sure that any of us that have used a shop vac in the gun room have experienced this.

I've caused more damage with a can of varnish and some rags than I have with vacuuming gun powder. Not that it's a good idea, just saying.

At one point, I dumped a double charge into a friend's ashtray.

I got a very nasty text about 2 days later.

I thought it was funny

I once took apart a homemade birdbanger and left it on the workshop counter and forgot about it. It was the launching charge. A few days later I was grinding with the flap disc and saw a flash out of the corner of my eye. My first thought was that I had finally blown out the crappy duplex in my garage, when I realized nothing was even plugged into it. I had just landed a spark right into the 50 grains of blackpowder.

Another member here lit off an entire 8lb jug of powder with welding sparks. I'll let him tell that story if he wants though.

It was a chunk of slag while plasma cutting... in a one car garage with the door 90% of the way closed... 5 minutes before the GF got home and

And then there's the story of a guy who dropped a few live primers on the rug in his reloading room. The next day his wife came in to vacuum the rug with her near-new vacuum cleaner. One or more of the primers went off while being sucked up and caused her vacuum cleaner to burn up. Unhappy wife.

These days I'll look for that one primer I dropped for a very long time.

Powder always stays in the flammable cabinet but I had pulled out the 8 lb jug to use or sell the next day don’t remember. Piece of hot slag fell and rolled perfectly next to the jug. melted the plastic then lit off the powder. Jug exploded and spread powder Across the shop which burned old western style when they light off kegs of powder with a line trickled a long ways away.

Shop filled with smoke used a full extinguisher to get the bulk of the fire out then got the garage door open and got out couldn’t see inside the garage at all from the driveway.

Then the gf got home 2 minutes later with massive amounts of smoke rolling out. Luckily I got the fire out only loosing one jug of powder and a pair of underpants

Damn !
That beats the 1 lb tin of modern black powder (pyrodex ?) I witnessed being accidentally being lit off in an open tin.

[ROFL1] you got me at the underpants. That is nuts! I could have never imagined a whole jug going off. We used to mess around with small amounts of pulldown when I was much younger, which was always impressive. Apples and oranges, of course.

I'm starting to think half the users here at one point or another, looked like the cliche cartoon character covered in black scorch marks :D

I am curious if anyone has ever accidentally lit off smokeless in quantity. It seems like there would be less initial shit in your pants, but the deflagration could make for an uninsured remains of a structure. We used to put around 200 grains of pulldown in popcans and they would act like miniature afterburners. I can't imagine what 56,000 grains would do (8 lbs)

Oh wow, even more curious now. Was there any structure damage- besides smoke? I know it spread some powder out - did the plastic "pop" and spray powder everywhere or did the majority deflagrate in a fast fire which was spreading some? I really have no idea how that would...and did go down.

90% of them could be summed up as 'It seemed like a good idea at the time.'

One of my favorites involves me and several other folks here lying in a ditch trying to cover our heads with steel plates trying to avoid the cross fire.

Heads-up, if you're making your own aluminum powder in a ball mill, don't forget when you open the canister, do it outside & most importantly away from your person. All that rapid oxidation & Whoosh - you need a new shirt.

Hey y'all! Watch this!

Actually, the pyrotechnics were dramatically underimpressive. Just so I don't keep everyone hanging, here's what I did. Nothing like the napalm scene in "Apocalypse Now."

A small rack to put water bottles, travel mugs, and plastic bags on to dry. It's been an idea I've been kicking around for a while. My Dad got a drill press for my parents anniversary and didn't know what to do with it. It is a pretty specialized piece of equipment - but mighty handy when the need arises.

Here it is in action. The biggest thing I learned is that working with a Dremel Tool in the kitchen is a bad idea. I knew better. I just had to try. I was inspired. I spent most of yesterday cleaning up sawdust. I've got most of it. I'll probably be cleaning it up for months to come.
