Anyone use their system, thoughts, complaints etc?

I have a cabin in the mountains that has zero hardwired internet available but excellent cell service. So it seems that I could use the Simpliesafe system with their monitoring which is cell based not wifi to add a little security to the place.

We don't have Simplysafe, but our house alarm is a cell phone only system, and it works well.

Had Simplisafe before. Being cell based, it’s dependent on cell signal. Power outages are somewhat mitigated via the base station’s back up battery, and all the non-camera sensors are battery based. Never had the Cameras.

Only bad thing was we had one motion detector that was acting crazy and almost had LE deployed over bad electronics several times. They (Simplisafe) called before dispatching the Sheriff Dept and we called them off as we had just left.

Overall, I think their stuff wasn’t bad. Other companies have you lease the equipment and the purchase cost is insane compared to Simplisafe. Or was.

Nothing beats claymore roomba. :)

All security systems have the option of using a cellular dialer.

As for simplysafe, it’s a wireless based system so your results may vary based on the size and construction of your home.

“All”?

Yes, all. I install security systems for a living, you can get a cellular dialer for any security system on the market.

Here are just a couple of the companies that make universal cellular dialers for security panels.

So def90 is there system that will sent alerts to my phone that doesn't require monitoring by a company? I'm mainly looking for water detection, temperature detection and last break in. There really isn't much to steal but having the heat go out would be a bigger problem then the tv getting stolen.

Cool. Had no idea.

What do you think provides the best bang for buck and overall best out on the market right now? Of those, do any require 3rd party install or can they be done by the owner?

Elk M1 security system will send an email or a text. You can get an outboard card for DSC systems made by EyezOn that will send an alert though the app itself is really clunky. Most security systems need to have an account with something like Alarm.com to get notifications to your phone. I believe on their end it’s a liability issue with the manufacturer. Back a decade or two ago when automation was starting to get big everyone was requesting rs232 interfaces for alarm panels so that we could integrate them with other systems. Alarm manufacturers did not want to do this as they thought that it was a back door in to a security system that they could some how become liable for if it ever got hacked. I think the same line of thinking is still being used with alarm manufacturers in regards to online apps, someone hacks your online account and gets in to your home and kills someone, who’s at fault?

I haven’t really kept up with the DIY systems out there other than basic features of what they are capable of for sales comparisons, most if not all of them are wireless only which is fine in a standard 2 or 3 bedroom sub 2k sq ft home, you’ll just want to change batteries every year or so to prevent false alarms that occur more frequently as battery life goes on. All of the pro brands such as Honeywell, DSC and so on can be bought online and installed by the DIYer if you have some electrical and basic programming aptitude. Otherwise most of the basic pro systems are in the general ball park price wise, the basic panels themselves are cheap, the in field devices like motion sensors, glass break detectors and so on add up fast so depending on how many points of protection you want or need will determine the final price.

I've had the previous generation of Simplisafe for several years.

Have no complaints. Did originally had a bad motion sensor, swapped it with other motion sensors in different locations and the problem followed the sensor - Simplisafe sent me a replacement.

Batteries in sensors need to be replaced every 1-2 years, so keep a supply around.

Still happy with the setup.

I don't know costs for "security" systems but you might look into an inexpensive Home Automation setup if you just need detection and notifications.

I'm using Hubitat and it's pretty good for what it is. Lots of integration stuff available and a large community of devs. That said, it's a rabbit hole I've gone down and spend a ton of money for all kinds of control gear and gizmos.
