https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2020/12/17/the-great-ammo-shortage-of-2020-when-will-it-end

Highlights-
Jason Hornady- "Ammunition is the new toilet paper."

"In March, we were up 86 percent and that did it?the inventory was gone. We literally emptied our building. Since then, the sales increase is back to 15 percent a month because that?s all we can manage. Literally, we make it one day and ship it the next."

"...but the difference this time is the string of events?Walmart, Virginia [anti-gun legislature], coronavirus, riots, an influx of [6-7 million] new gun owners, a bad election. It all adds up."

"And not just copper and lead, it?s also packaging, staples and other supplies. Did you know there?s a shortage on the DOT-approved cardboard required for shipping our loaded ammunition? "

More of the same with different quotes.

Highlights-
"What many ammunition consumers don’t realize is that each firearm manufactured must be function fired and proof tested."
“If a gun company can’t test their guns,” Hoffman said, “they can’t ship them. We have an obligation to them and when, all of the sudden, they need two to three times as much ammo as what was planned for, it’s a challenge.”

I hadn't thought of that.

The scale of this current shortage is like a terrible math problem, with 6-7 million new gun owners just within a few months, and ALL OF THEM scrambling for ammo. If they all want 1000 rounds, that's 7 BILLION rounds of ammo.

Kind of makes me feel bad for stacking it so deep while ammo was plenty and affordable. *not at all

If everyone in China and India produced just 10 rounds of ammo each, the problem would be easily solved!

They either wrote that quick, had my 12 year old write it, or that's the rough draft. Journalism.

Got an interesting email from the RMR Bullets today detailing their current production and shipping delays, and discussing an upcoming price increase:

Since April the cost of copper has steadily risen almost every day. We are now paying about a $1.50 more per lb of copper than we were in April. Since we started manufacturing four years ago we have never seen copper get this high. Lead has recently taken a small spike as well but I don't see it going as high as copper.

In the end, it amounts to between $6-$8 more for us to produce 1,000 bullets.

Lets start a group to not buy ammo on Tuesday. Then production will catch up and we can all rush the stores to buy ammo on Wednesday.

Serious side note: Stimulus checks coming, which means even heavier burden on supply chains. If you need something that's in stock that other people would buy if they had free cash, order it today before those checks hit. Lol.

Austin Weiss, owner of Grind Hard Ammo..."We went from paying around $16 for 1,000 primers to paying over $100.?

I don't see prices dropping soon, if ever.

Ugh. I am just poor enough that I couldn?t find a way out of the last one. Definitely don?t want the next one either as I have a feeling all I am going to do is get screwed come tax time.

I will continue to not push their agenda and just hoard the money instead of spending it. Although I do sort of admire the people who will use it to buy guns and ammunition since I feel that is almost a big middle finger to the government.

Deposited last night. It's in the cart. Looking for a FFL that is fair on fees and not a 3hr round trip.

Exactly.
The owner of the local liquor store has a FFL and did transfers, but I haven't seen him in a while. Might have to ask the clerk.

Yep. That?s why I haven?t bought a firearm in 2020. Not worth me killing a half day one day and another half a day a few days later to buy something. I am kind of craving something so maybe if we get to some sort of normalcy I will buy a new toy.

I wouldn't mind even driving to your area, but there's a lack of shops in the area.

I wonder if Big R would handle an inbound internet transfer.

I am not familiar with Big R and their policies. Might be worth giving them a call. That?s definitely close to my house.

Big R does do internet order transfers but doesn't do private transfers. I had a Sig shipped to the Big R in Elizabeth last December

Well, as of at least yesterday, they no longer will do that.

Yup, discovered this yesterday too as I have an out of state transfer coming to them some time next week. Thought I'd stop by and get the bgc done but no go. Oh well, at least they're close to me so it's not a biggie on doing two trips.

Can't vouch for them but I've seen these guys advertising on armslist a bit. Thinking of using them in the future next time I do an out of state purchase since guns for everyone doesn't do them anymore. Might be worth checking out.

As a side note - HRC steel has been going up rapidly as well, as have most metals.
