What are yours?

Mom used to make us eat black eyed peas for good luck throughout the upcoming year.

Dad used to change the smoke detector batteries.

I enjoyed the Twilight Zone marathon on Syfy.

We did the black eyed peas as well for luck. We also had cabbage which I think was for money or prosperity for the new year.

My best New Years were when I was in my twenties. I would always get together with my brothers and a select group of good friends and we would gather at my moms house for the evening. Once you arrived there was no leaving until the next morning. Not because we were all big drinkers but because we loved each other and didn?t want anyone on the roads with the potential for others to be driving around drunk. Good times.

Maybe.

They don?t do black eyed peas, cabbage and corn bread around here?

Wife does the black eyed peas thing occasionally.

Literally, as I type this, she mentioned it.

Yes, we're from TX

I'll change the smoke detector batteries when they chirp, no sooner. About to the point where I rip 'em all out and replace them all with a different brand anyway, mine are too sensitive and go off at random.

Check the date on them. They are only good for ten years.

My house was built 4 years (ish) ago.

They seriously go off on a whim. The other night, I was about to start start cooking and they go off (stove not even on). Got a alarm for smoke (not CO).
We can't even make toast without the vent hood on most of the time.

So, at 3 a.m. on some random Tuesday we?ll find you swapping batteries?

That's why they're on the counter next to the coffee pot. I sleep like shit anyway, may as well have an excuse.

Smoke alarms are cheap and very easy to change out, if they are that much of a pain invest 150$ in a different model. My house is around the same age as yours and definitely don't have the same issue.

Now as for new years traditions, when I was younger and before I had a family my tradition was to smoke as much weed and drink as much alcoholic beverages as I could.

traditions? Why we use to get together with a few differents groups and enjoy alcoholic beverages, various foods etc. As time went on, getting a buzz and having to drive became less an outlet, than potential to loose not only your DL, but gun rights.
Then again most people we associated with, friends and family, stopped drinking decades ago. So it's usually an early night, if out and about. BUT we don't need a holiday to enjoy the company of others. .

That should be "All y'all" [LOL]

My nieghbors and I would set up a portable fire pit in the cul-de-sac, everyone would bring food and drink, lawn chairs. Some years even some fireworks would be set off, didn't matter on the weather-we would do it. This year one couple is fighting covid, everyone else is just sitting tight, those of us healthy enough will lift a glass from our driveways and toast this suck ass year being in the past.

My older son is 18 years old, and when my wife was pregnant with him she took a water aerobics class with a bunch of other first time moms and one lady working on her fourth. They all became friends and all of the kids were born within 30 days of each other. The moms became one big social group that brought in the husbands, too.

At about the kids' age 3 my wife and I decided to host a kids' sleepover for new years eve for the 8 or so kids to let the other parents go out and celebrate. This continued the next year, and so on. Eventually the other parents would stay a little longer and finally no one left. The kids grew up, brought their friends over, and the older siblings of the experienced mom also came over, brought boyfriends and would travel from different cities to make the event.

It's not happening this year for the first time in 15 years. We've already had one request to set up a virtual party, so we we're working on that. I'm not even sure if I'll stay up to midnight this year.

My Dad was a petroleum geologist with Shell. Every time there was a promotion, we had to move. Corporate Policy
We lived in Louisiana, Wyoming, Canada, Utah, California, and Colorado.
My folks were originally from MA and NH, then picked up traditions and recipes from every location and carried them with us.
We have always had black-eyed peas first thing New Year's morning for good luck all year. Best as I can figure, my parents picked that up in Louisiana.
My most interesting observation of New Year's tradition was in Naples, Italy, while in the Navy in the 60's.
Fireworks and then people would throw everything into the street that they wanted to get rid of - I mean everything - appliances, trash, clothes, furniture.
We were barred from going out on the streets from 10 PM New Year's Eve to about 8 AM New Years Day, (Yeah, I know 2200 to 0800), when front-loaders and dump trucks would go down the streets cleaning them up.
No scavenging, just pure trash removal.
Probably a lot different now.

Nah. The renters in my condo complex celebrate that way every day.

I generally try to make a motorcycle ride on New Year's day, regardless of the weather. Street bike if possible, dirt bike as a second choice.
I've only missed a couple of rides in the last 34 years.

You?re a beast.

My motorcycles are happy sitting in the garage on the chargers this time of year.

I've worked almost every NYE as an adult. I bartended at the Knight of Columbus in NY all through college (made bank!) and casinos, well, they're busy on NYE so you're expected to be there.

This year I'm furloughed, of course, so I'm home sipping Makers and waiting for my wife to get home. She's off at 11PM (also a casino employee) so we'll be able to hang out at midnight at home for the first time ever, IIRC.

Way off topic but you guys will appreciate this.

I worked with a poker dealer who owned a Harley and an airplane. No car. He'd drive his bike to Black Hawk regardless of the weather all year long. There were days he'd walk in looking like Ralphie from "A Christmas Story" with his snow suit on and shit......he was hilarious, and a bit nuts.

He ended up moving to FL and crashing his plane on a residential street. I was not the least bit surprised to hear that. No injuries, thankfully. Wack job.

Subject to the black-eyed pea thing through my entire childhood. Never developed the taste for them, and let that tradition die a quick death.
One of the best things about moving out here a decade and some change ago was that I could watch the ball drop at 10:00 PM and then call it a night, which is exactly what I plan to do here shortly!

I enjoyed the Twilight Zone marathon on Syfy.

I've been doing this the last several years, it's also cool to recognize a young actor who was just getting started.

Black-eyed peas cooked with a ham bone, plus some rice to make Hoppin' John. Greens. Tamales.

...all for good luck in the coming year.

New Year's had become the preferred time for my side of the family to get together to celebrate Christmas. My sister's always had reasons to leave Christmas day to visit their SO's. This way we get a few days to hang out and let all the kids play with their cousins.

Was waiting to see if someone would do this......just wondering who it would be......:(

What we did do was quite exciting and a whole LOT of fun.
