View Full Version : I guess birdshot loads are gone now too...

I didn't realize the most stalwart categories of ammo in any previous drought, low-cost shotgun game and target loads, have now been depleted. Sportsman's on Santa Fe had only some expensive turkey and non-toxic waterfowl loads- everything else is sold. Cabelas and Walmarts are similar.

When nothing else is available, bird shot will work in a pinch.

At Cabela's, I did see good availability on the almost $10 per round "TSS" turkey loads- are those handmade by blind monks in Tibet?

Shotgun shells take a ton of space to store. People are acting just plain stupid now. Preparing for CQC.

Ironically enough, I spent a week and some change on a jury trial involving a Greeley PD officer who took two rounds of birdshot to the groin and thighs. Complete with graphic pictures on the operating table, and testimony from the surgeon. Moral of this story is that it sucks to get hit with two rounds of birdshot to the balls, but it probably won't take you out of the fight right away.

Ugh. My sympathies to the LEO.

Damn...

When I was a teen, I shot a skunk in the ass with #8 birdshot, twice... I can only imagine the carnage after seeing the damage to the skunk...

FYI - it stunk for WEEKS, and still when it rained for MONTHS.

I was able to get 4 cases online from Cabelas both 12 and 20. Went to shoot a round of clays a few weeks back and had no shells. Never have stocked up since I have a Walmart right across the highway from me. 3 Walmarts, Sportsman Warehouse and Basspro I was able to get enough to shoot the next day. Found online and ordered immediately as I have a couple of charity matches this summer and who knows if there will be shells but then.

The shot used is extremely expensive. I think they made the TSS heavier than hevishot- which normally run $5/each for about 1.25 oz of shot. The Turkey loads may have had even more shot.

I just find it amusing that a shotgun shell for turkey hunting can cost more than a round of magnum hunting grade ammo for african big game.

Cut shells work well as a field expedient measure. Just saying.

You can still use lead and copper on Safari. Not so here, thanks to all those environmental advancements in the 70's and 80's.

The 2021 Colorado Turkey brochure says lead or steel is OK. Am I missing something on why you need a $10 turkey round?

Probably not, besides improved performance through technology that's touted by the manufacturers. All my "unleaded" experience is from waterfowling. I guess I just assumed turkey was probably the same...

Went to Scheels last weekend and they had a shit ton of shotgun shells only thing they had on the shelves.

I would use 22lr before I used 12 birdshot to defend my self.

This lastest level of depletion is definitely a recent thing. It wouldn't surprise me if larger stores still had stock.

I've seen a BIT of 12ga game and trap loads on the shelves at Scheel's, but as others have witnessed, the only thing on the shelves at Sportman's, BPS, Wal-Mart, etc, is turkey loads and some random hunting loads.

I predicted shotgun ammo would be next, and luckily bought enough for the next couple seasons right before things went full crazy. You know the shortage has reached its final form when you cant even shoot skeet.

For what it's worth, I COULD buy all the .50BMG and .17HMR I needed at Sportsman's in Loveland yesterday...except I don't need, and apparently nobody else does either. :)

I went to buy some 12ga upland and waterfowl shells a little over a month ago. It was slim pickens then but I got what I needed for the hunting season.

There was plenty of shot however. I haven't loaded 12ga in a few years only because I don't shoot it much anymore (used to shoot tons of trap), but I took the opportunity to stock up on shot. May be time to breakout the ol shot shell loader again before long.

It's tungsten. Almost as strong as diamond. Denser than lead. Very high melting point, around 6000 degrees versus 600 for lead. So it is difficult to work with.

Also, the majority comes from China so there may be a supply issue for US companies, due to tariffs.

Demolition Ranch on youtube bought a large block of it and shot it with different calibers. Barely scratched it. Another guy put it in his press and it just cut a square hole in the bottom block. Amazing stuff.

I learned a lot about W (tungsten and tungsten carbide) after doing hw on Sig P320 and their W infused frame.

Even with some chemistry, I did not know the W density being that higher (heavier per volume) than Pb.

I usually do redneck engineering Pb golf weight strip where glock plug goes into. Still way below the weight limit.

Weight tapers to bottom , middle or top, depends on how I am shooting.

I stopped in to the Walmart in Lafayette yesterday, they had close to 20, 100 count boxes of 7 1/2 12 gauge on the shelf. I think it was federal and around $22 per 100 but not positive on the price or brand. They were almost out of clay pigeons.

As some of people said, I do see many expensive steel load and higher end load. I do not see AA or even Fiocci target loads.

However, I am starting to see some 9mm, to 45acp. Haven't yet to see any 338 lapua, 223, and 5.7x28mm.

Fountain WM as well.
Sportsman’s in COS had 9mm at $15.99, 5.56 at $11.99, bulk .22LR and some defensive 9mm at $38.99.
Limit of two per.
