I was just talking to a friend about how they really need to remake Red Dawn, and I saw this out on the internet, comes out of november of 2010. Any thoughts?

We were talking about this at work 2 weeks ago. They are filming/have filmed entirely up in Michigan. It looks like this will be a more intense movie than the original.
I guess that, instead of Russia and Cuba invading, the word is that it is Russia and China this time around. In the original movie, I really liked the part where the Russian troops were up in the mtn's and they found an arrow. One of the Russian soldiers was bs'ing his buddies and telling them that the arrow was from our Indians. The other guys called him on that and pointed out that the "feathers" were made of plastic. I thought that that scene helped to humanize these invaders.
I really enjoyed the original but I'll definitely be seeing this new version.
WOLVERINES!
Could never figure out why hollyweird feel the need to mess with prefection.. Let's face it they have no original ideas out there.. This is akin to doing remakes of Gone with the wind or Casablanca.. Anybody remember the remake for tv of From here to Eternity from the late 70's?
Besides, I can't really find the Detroit setting plausable, Let's face it, chances are the people of Detroit would give the commies a parade rather than fight...
Great, just what we need, another shitty remake. I've never seen Red Dawn, but I'll go pick it up.

Sturtle give it a try. Have to gear you mind for early 80's to really appreciate. Three years later Swayze did Dirty Dancing go figure....
Will definatly have to watch it.

I'm not sure what the premise of the remake is. In the origional, the Russians and Cubans invaded us. This was back during the cold war and so it seemed plausible at least. Does anybody know what brings about the invasion in the remake?
Seriously Sturtle, you've never seen Red Dawn? Man, you've GOT to rent it!
I remember how the commies were able to identify and disarm private firearms owners by looking at purchase records. I remember thinking that little tidbit was amazingly pro gun for Hollywood.

The thought of the CHinese invading us isnt' plausible? I've been terrified of them for years. Tell you the truth though, they could decimate us without firing a single bullet. Our entire economy (sadly) revolves around China.

I was 7 when Red Dawn came out, And my father took me to the movies to see it. I remember being vividly terrified at what I saw, and had nightmares about it. I guess it explains why I turned out the way i did.

Yeah, now that I think about it, you're right.
That is the real danger of off-shoring industrial capacity. I wonder if we would have the means to produce the materials necessary to fight a major war against an enemy like China. Personally, I think one of the best things we could do would be to get back to being a country with an economy based on production and manufacturing rather than a service based economy. Just my thoughts though.
I don't mean to sound pissy, but I prefer original movies, not crappy remakes. If anyone can name a single remake that was better than the original, I'm all ears, but I can't think of any at this time. The only acceptable way to steal an idea for a movie is make a movie from a book. Even the American versions of other countries movies are lame. Like all those horror movies that came out like The Grudge and The Ring. Both of those were remakes of original Japanese remakes. It's kind of sad how much money can be made off of Americans by dumbing down a film just so people don't have to read subtitles. Oh well. Anyway, there are a TON of movies that I haven't seen, and I I've caught up on a LOT of classics from recomendations online.
Some examples:
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
Heat
Sexy Beast
Revolver
Rock n Rolla
I bolded my two favorites on there.
I recently started a thread on some other boards asking people to list their top ten animes and have watched about 8 new movies I had never previously seen before. At least 5 of them turned out to be really great. I'm going to put Red Dawn on my "Netflix que" and watch it this week.
And for the record, if I have my history correct, China has never invaded another country in its entire history, if you don't count Tibet.
In fact, for a while, I told all my friends, "Despite having the worlds largest standing army, you know why China has never invaded another country? Because they have a chink in their armor!"

WTF??????
NEVER SEEN IT?
really?
I didn't think that was possible.
That's worse than never having seen The Patriot.
(You have seen that one, right?)
[ROFL3]
I haven't seen The Patriot (and heard it sucked) AND I haven't seen Braveheart. My cousin tried to get me to watch Braveheart for years, and I had it in my possession for a few weeks, but I never got around to it. It's not that I don't want to watch it, just never got around to it.

so do you only watch little mermaid, snow white and the seven dwarfs and Cinderella because you certainly have missed a whole lot of great moves.
I think I've seen more great movies than ones I've missed. Do we need to start a top ten thread so I can make my "To Watch" list a little longer? Also, it sounds like Red Dawn might be near as old, if not older than I am.
Here is what I have in que right now:
Red Dawn
Year One
Big Trouble Little China
Collateral
ConAir
Spirited Away
Public Enemies
Zombieland
Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder
Big Trouble In Little China? Wasn't bad when it came out (prolly bc I was 5yo) but other then Kim Cattrall I see no reason to watch it again.
I've seen it labeled as a "classic" a few times, so I picked it up.
My new thing is that I've decided to make a list of every book that I can ever remember reading. I put it in a Google Doc and so far I'm up to 124 or something, just from memory (and help from Wikipedia and Google). It helps to just look up an author, then look through their works to see which ones I've read. I've always known I've read a lot of Stephen King (17) and Dean Koontz(26) but was never sure exactly how many I've actually read. It is a fun and interesting thing to do. Brings back both memories of the books, and what you were doing when you read them (if you can remember).

THe only remake I can think of that is better than the original is Gone in 60 Seconds. The original, i own on DVD, and although there are lots of cool crashes, there isn't much of a plot.

You guys see some crappy movies. In relation to guy movies for this site:
Way of the Gun
Terminator
The Wild Bunch
Scarface
Saving Private Ryan
Robocop
Braveheart
Pork Chop Hill
God Father
I'd take "Taken" or a Bourne movie over anything on your list above.
The gayest I'll go is Starship Troopers.
"Patriot" was OK, but it seemed for a while like Mel was just looking for movies to kill English people.
Tsk, tsk. Much to learn these young ones ;)

Ok... Heres my list of good movies. No particular order.
1. Terminator
2. Independance day
3. Alien
4. Heartbreak Ridge
5. Shawshank Redemption
6. Green Mile
7. Full Metal Jacket
8. Police Academy
9. The Naked Gun
10. Better Off Dead
Right now I'm waiting for Netflix to send Terminator Salvation. I hope its good.
Oh yeah, I still haven't seen Way of the Gun either.
Otherwise, I've seen most of both of those lists.

I wouldn't bother with year one. one of the worst movies jack black has made IMO. I thought it was horrible.
I haven't heard a lot of good things about it, but it's not like it cost me a lot* of money to check it out. I'm not expecting much. Those are just the movies I have immediately in que though.
I was really disappointed in Land of the Lost with Will Ferrell. I think i laughed about twice the entire movie.
Space balls
Young Frankenstien
Blazing Saddles

I just watched Blazing Saddles again a week or so ago, wife picked it up for $2 on Black Friday. Anti-gun or not, Mel Brooks is a riot.
I don't know how I could have forgotten Saving Private Ryan. What a well done movie. Braveheart and Rob Roy were both good, and I really don't care if people say they weren't terribly historically accurate. It's a MOVIE. Sort of like when some professors were whining about Apocalypto. Again, MOVIE. Not a documentary. This is ENTERTAINMENT, if they want accuracy try an encyclopedia. Even then, whose accuracy are you going to get? Anytime you have a conflict, accuracy is mostly defined by the winners.
Also on my like list were-
The Missing
300
Master and Commander
The Last Samurai
Kingdom of Heaven
3:10 to Yuma
The Horse Soldiers
Ghost and the Darkness
We Were Soldiers
Shooter
The Sand Pebbles
On my Gratuitous Action Flick List -
The Punisher (The one with Thomas Jane and John Travolta)
The Underworld movies
all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies
all the Mummy movies
Iron Man
all the Tremors movies (Bert's the greatest!)
Pitch Black and the Chronicles of Riddick
Quigley Down Under
All the Indiana Jones flicks!
Swordfish
And, of course, Beowulf
I can't find Space Balls or I'd have it too! And I haven't seen Young Frankenstein in years. I haven't seen Way of the Gun yet, but right now Gran Torino is next on the watch list. I can't believe I've let myself miss that one this long!
My favorites that go along with the genre in this thread would have to be:
Saving Private Ryan
Revolver
Rock n' Rolla
Heat
BlackHawk Down
The Last Samuri
Sword of the Stranger
Ghost in the Shell
Fight Club
Kill Bill series
Jurassic Park
Goodfellas
Appleseed
Vexille
As far as more action and less content I'd add
Ninja Scroll (kind of cheesy lines but awesome violence and adult situations. Not for kids)
Pitch Black
Matrix (First one only. After the second one I didn't even bother anymore)
300
Other mediocre movies like those.
Open Range was pretty good.

"Open Range" is on my short list of all time great westerns along with "Unforgiven".
The only issue I'd challenge with "Open Range" was Costner's 12-shot SAA in the final gunfight scene. It was explained on the DVD edition 2nd disk, though, so he knew it was an issue that purists would catch.
My favorite line from "Unforgiven" was when Hackman called Eastwood a coward for shooting an unarmed man:
Little Bill Daggett: "Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!"
Will Munny: "Well, he shoulda armed himself if hes gonna decorate his saloon with my friend."
Yeah thumbs up on Unforgiven as well.
Open range is great. The main tough is bragging about killing their friend and charley just shoots him in the face.
That's the way to handle a gunfight.

In my opinion, that is par for the course in ALL Will Ferrell movies. I can't stand the guy or his movies. I can tolerate just a couple of the comedies by Adam Sandler too.
Someone mentioned MANY posts back that Hollyweird doesn't have any original ideas any more. I agree wholheartedly, but one movie I've been waiting to see for a couple of years now is the remake of Logan's Run. This movie is still catagorized as being "in production" and is now listed as coming out in 2012.
I'm a little over half way through Red Dawn. Early '80's indeed. haha. Even though I read the post about Patrick Swayze being in it, it took me about 30 minutes to realize who I was looking at.

I had better add a couple too...
Tears of the Sun
Kiss kiss bang bang
Band of Brothers series
As far as remakes that were better than the origionals go, I would vote for the Batmans with christian bale, and I thought the new Bond movies were pretty decent...
Great, just what we need, another shitty remake. I've never seen Red Dawn, but I'll go pick it up.
BAN HIM!!![Rant2]
I will see this movie but they have made some really bad straight-to-DVD sequels lately. War of the worlds 2... but the first movie was bad too.
I have seen a few good sequels though. The Dark Night, Terminator 2 and 3. Matrix 2...
But I hope they don't screw this up. They will though.
Tears of the Sun
Really? This movie was nearly unwatchable for me. Terrible.

Cant believe it took this long to include Black Hawk Down.
Most of the movies listed are fiction, how about some non fiction real life scenarios.
Im excited about Red Dawn 2, thought about this many times, do you think they have a chance? they not only have to contend with the most advanced military in the world but us also. I think thats the only thing that keeps war off our soil. (other than us fighting ourselves civil fashion)
This should be good. I liked the first one because it was here in Colorado and while east and west coast seemed to welcome their new overlords rednecks here didn't take any shit. We shot back and won. My favorite line was when C Thomas Howell was getting ready to execute the traitors and the POW and the POW said "I will show how a Russian dies." And he said "Seen it before, pal." Great stuff.
I see the new one blaming it on Bush not Obama. Then showing the main character not as a strong American forced into the job of Gorilla fighter with a few weaknesses that he puts aside long enough to pull out a set of nuts needed. But instead it will follow around a POS looser that is half a fag and has no place in uniform and should be living off of others like the liberal coward that he is. Like in Jarhead. They never showed what he was doing after he left the corps in jarhead. I have a feeling that after he made a few interviews condemning his actions out there he turned into a rough trick named Jim.
And this movie will fall into the waste basket with all the other movies that were to wrong for us to see and was to tough for the left to enjoy. (e.g. Generation Kill, Wolf, The Kingdom...)
I'm looking forward to and at the same time dreading this remake. Got to say my favorite scene went:
Jed Eckert (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000664/): ...Well, who *is* on our side?
Col. Andy Tanner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000959/): Six hundred million screaming Chinamen.
Darryl Bates (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0198257/): Last I heard, there were a billion screaming Chinamen.
Col. Andy Tanner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000959/): There *were*.
Of course now China must be bad guys.
It is an important concept for the American people to be confronted with, I'm just not sure that main stream Hollywood is up for the task.

You want a nonfiction, real life scenario? Go find a copy of The Hanoi Hilton. I have a copy on VHS, I've never seen it on DVD. It's a fairly good representation of 'real life' for the guys who got shot down over North Vietnam. I wouldn't recommend it as light entertainment, and especially not for kids, but it's worth watching. Give some folks a bit of perspective.

I haven't seen this one posted yet. Granted, it was very hard to watch but I thought it was pretty well done and very respectful. Yes, it's an HBO movie and that is normally enough to get it banned from my home.
For this one, I'll make an exception:
Taking Chance.
Watch it...but if you're the type of guy who doesn't like others to see you emotional, watch it alone.
What's wrong with HBO? (I don't have it so I don't know).
Okay, so I just finished watching Red Dawn. Was it originally a book? This movie is packed full of serious subplots and character development. It's a shame it had so little dialog and such poor production value. At least it didn't insult the viewer by spelling everything out for them. Makes the viewer think of different aspects on their own.
Also I liked the visual of riding around on horses with AK-47s. Heh. Thanks for the recommendation guys.

What's wrong with HBO? (I don't have it so I don't know).
They're just known for being very anti-gun and liberal in their political views. I only have HBO on the satellite for the next few days (I had a free 90-days of HBO & Showtime becaused I bitched long and hard about the poor service we got from Dish Network).
Is it HBO or Showtime that did the reality show with with The Shootist?
When I applied for Denver PD, they showed some movie after the physical and written testing. It was a British film that was released under one name in Europe, then another name here. I asked what it was called, and remembered the name for about a year, but every time I looked for it, I could never find it. It's driving me crazy trying to think of the title. I want to say it was early 90's and has a Munich kind of feel to it. I might be wrong though, since I never finished Munich.

I would put it in my top ten. It was pretty cliche and predictable, but i like it none the less. To each his own...

Basically think about everything Tom Cruise believes in, roll it into one big movie, add a thousand times he should have been killed in the movie but didn't add a happy ending and you have war of the worlds.
I wasn't impressed.

One from your list: Heat. The original, LA Takedown, was a made for tv movie I think, and definitely suffers in comparison to the big budget version.
I loved Red Dawn, and I'm going to have to watch it again now I've realised it's set here. Whenever I am dying with the flu, I always scream at my wife to avenge meeeeee! :D
Haha, that's funny. I thought that scene was pretty awkward. I wanted to tell the dad, "Hey bub, you're still alive and no one is even doing anything to you, calm down."
I also didn't realize Charlie Sheen was in that movie. In some scenes I suspected it was him. Same with the girl who played Baby in Dirty Dancing. Though, the copy I saw was pretty poor in quality.

Best remake. I'll give it a go. Nothing against the originals either.
Gone in 60 seconds

Cape Fear
Ocean's 11
The Bourne Identity
The Maltese Falcon
Titanic
The Omega Man

Dawn of the Dead
Sling Blade
Ransom
Others I'm sure. I still like the originals but the remakes were well done.

Just looked the new one up... Not holding my breath for it.. The director is a stunt coodinater,, And,, Conner Cruise is in it... Yes, the son of Tom..
From what I gathered,, not even useing the original script..

I still can't believe that only one person has mentioned the Band of Brothers HBO mini-series. I don't care what HBO's politics are, this is hands down the greatest movie/miniseries ever made.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, the miniseries consists of ten 1-hour long segments. Each segment is a different part of the story as the greater storyline follows E-Company of the 506th regiment of the 101st airborne from the beginning of their training to the end of WWII. The storyline is based on the letters, journals, and personal interviews of the survivors of Easy Company. Each segment has a new writer and director with Tom Hanks doing the screenplay for the whole series and directing two of the segments himself. Watching Band of Brothers is an experience like none other and if anyone in the Colorado Springs/Southern Denver area would like to borrow it from me (on DVD) send me a PM.
Bottom Line: If you like Saving Private Ryan, then you'll absolutely LOVE Band of Brothers.
Cool, thanks for the tip. I'll look at putting BOB on my "netflix que."
