View Full Version : 1911 in 38 super - 9mm question
I just picked up a shooter us property 1911 with a 38 super slide and just started looking into 38 super/comp.... I havent fired it yet so dont know what the extractor is set for, but it made me wonder if i could just swap in a 9mm barrel?
Anyone know how to figure out what the extractor is set for - does the rim size delta even matter (.406" - .387") - or done a 9mm swap before?

Been a popular conversion for some time. 38 super mags are generally not reliable with the 9mm cartridge. Mag and barrel change and you will probable need to tune the extractor to the 9mm rim. Keep in mind the barrel will not be a drop in like a glock and will need to be fitted.
Most 1911 extractors will work for both 9mm and Super. I have had a few over the years but got tired of chasing expensive Super brass.
Push a loaded round under the extractor and see if gravity makes it fall off. That means you are on the light end of tension. If you have a hard time pushing it under the hook, there is too much tension.
