Are the Best Days Behind Us ? .... Or Are the best Days Ahead of Us ?

The answer is a resounding Yes, for every person, at any given time in history.

Its all about context and your expectation of what "Best Days" are. Every generation is faced with a unique mixture of challenges and opportunities to deal with. Every person has a different expectation of what their "Best Days" are or where. Then you have the never ending evolution of the human race in how it chooses to exist. The one thing the human race seems to be really good at is needing to relearn the same lessons over and over again the hard way.

Pessimist or optimist.

My best days are long behind me.

Everything going forward just gets worse.

I think we (the USA, as per the OP) will have worse days ahead, before it gets better.... but “best”? God only knows.

Different context, My personal best days may be behind me, or they could be in front of me after I retire, but what makes my personal best is limited to me, not the USA as a country.

I firmly believe we peaked as a society in the 80’s. Culture-wise people could still laugh, and cancel culture wasn’t a thing. Messing with someone’s income source was considered despicable, no matter how they’d wronged you. We believed everyone could make it if you worked hard.

I hope my kids can rise above the rotten garbage our culture has become and make themselves successful, but I think they’ll struggle more than I did.

Good question. Lately I have felt the county's best days are behind us. The reason I feel that way is a combination of average person apathy (or shock at how fast the culture has changes/is changing) and the level of aggression and widespread adoption of socialism/marxism/woke culture. There was a time a few years ago when the companies with woke culture were relatively few in number and easily avoidable - like Starbucks, Dicks, and Target. Now just about all companies have integrated leftists into senior management and HR departments. Some believe the cancel culture will "burn itself out", but I'm not so sure given how widespread it is and aggressively it is spreading. The woke have no problem at all eating their own if they don't toe the latest line. They sure have figured out how to weaponize the pandemic, and I have no doubt a second pandemic will "happen" if this one doesn't do the job.

Now to have some cereal for breakfast and watch some bugs bunny.

Normally I'd say "things will get bad until a breaking point and then get good again" the whole "Tytler cycle" thing.

But with modern (and coming) technology, 100% surveillance and thus total enslavement of all of the people is much more possible than it ever was in the past, so no, America's (and humanity's) best days are in the past. Things will get progressively worse until we reach a point of no return where we will be enslaved or murdered by The State (which itself will probably be controlled by AI).

Of course I guess the return of Christ will eventually set all that straight, but I still think that's a lot longer off than most Evangelicals do ... at least a century or two if not millennia).

My neighbor took his flag down on Inauguration Day. He was always such a dick about it because he has a flood light on his eave because "it's flag code," but the light just points at all our houses. I told him I'd help him build a system that lit it from the ground, but he wouldn't budge on it. So on one hand, while I'm happy to not have to stare directly into that light anymore after almost a decade, on the other hand I'm so disappointed in what a quitter/coward he is. The worst part is I think he talked our other neighbor into taking his flag down as well. I need to go lecture him about what how he's a giant disappointment to this country and how he must have just been a poser asshole all these years blinding the rest of the neighbors with his dipshit light, only to pack it up like a pussy when his party didn't get picked. What an idiot.

Agree with this. The chinese on top of already extensively using facial recognition are now deploying AI-based "emotion trackers" already. 100% camera coverage in all of their public spaces. It has been getting very bad over there, but there is no way for them to complain about it, and government has perfected absolute control and eliminated risk of upheaval there.

When it comes here, nobody knows, but what is assured is that it is coming here. I'm not going to draw comparisons for movies, but any semblance of freedom or "fixing government" disappears once any government has deployed that system. It doesn't matter how bad it gets, they will always have total control with that.

Imagine the government being able to immediately know who you are, wherever you are, maintain a file on all of your actions, movements, places, and contacts, and immediately spot subtle details such as that you grimaced when your president walked by in a parade, or if you were angry in any public space. Being able to make a file and identify anyone that was demonstrating a regular pattern of negative emotions. This would catch most season spies, if not all of them, there is no question the dragnet would grab all normal citizens that could pose a risk by any imagination to the state apparatus.

The Chinese are already there.

Imagine if all the people stood up for them selves and refused to comply? You can only be controled if you accept it.

We need to revisit the 4th Amendment...

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Good, bad. Depends who you ask and what your view is.

But I want to postulate the following. The republic has fallen. Just like Rome fell and lasted for decades more after the fall, so has our republic. No it?s not going to be barbarians and whatnot. It?s going to be the 21st century equivalent.

FoxtArt

I feel its heading towards a fall, ala Rome like you mentioned, but with duct tape of state machinery and surveillance that denys a broken thing the natural order of falling apart. A roman empire might exist today if they had the same thing. It would be a putrid mess of corruption and chaos, but with no viable method to naturally die unless conquered by invaders. In the modern world, all possible invaders have the same duct tape. I'm not an optimist by any means. On top of it all, once brain/computer links are perfected (Elon) there will be no greater mechanism of class divide and disparity than trying to compete against "those" people, all but making it a social requirement to have one in future generations. Across the charts, the left is creating what they pretend to fear.

Are the Best Days Behind Us ? .... Or Are the best Days Ahead of Us ?

I regret to imply that the best days are behind us, but that's mostly because everything seems to be getting shittier and shittier.......in so many aspects of being alive in these times.
