View Full Version : What AR dissasembley tools do I need?

I havn't been in to ARs for very long now so I don't have all the tools for taking them all the way apart. What kind of stuff do I need? Can anyone recommend a good kit that has all the wrenches an stuff. I don't need the junk like handguard removers (just use your feet and teeth!) and other fancy stuff. I'm talking like buffer tube and barrel wrench. Other than those two, is there anything else essential?

Thanks

General purpose DPMS multi-tool should do ya!

The Multi wrench is a good item to have, a good punch set and brass/nylon hammer... yeah, that's about it. If you really need the handguard removal tool, you might be better served by some time doing push-up's [Weight]

Vice block/action block for upper and lower; DPMS multi tool; a better spanner wrench if you are going to work on collapsible stocks can help, good steel and brass punches; a decent gunsmith hammer; good screwdrivers and allen wrenches, pliars, needle nose pliars, vice grips,

and don't forget the dremel[Coffee]

Delicate chamber work, barrel crowning, threading, headspace adjusting, ect. You know, all the usual gunsmithing stuff.

Ahh I see. Probably won't do any of that for a while.

You forgot about mixing margeritas[ROFL1]

Depending on the work you are planning a bench block for FSB's and a set of good roll pin punches not to mention a strap wrench can be handy.

Very funny Hoser. You are gonna get this poor guy in trouble. The dremel tool is kind of a joke around gunsmiths and those who have done lots of gun work. More than a few have gotten guns with obvious dremel work on them that destroyed a major part or two.

I've used a dremel on a few parts, but only in moderation and only on cheap and replaceable parts. Mostly just polishing parts.

Just make sure you stay away from the serial number with that. [ROFL1]

Oh I always file the serial # off. That way the government can't track me!

I always cringe when somebody says: "Well you see I tried to clean it up with a Dremel................"
God only knows what awaits me[Shock]

About the only thing that sees the Dremel is the polishing on a ramp/throat and that is after I have stoned and wet polished with paper & backing.

Bad investment. Brownells is ok for for miscellaneous parts and pieces but is WAAAAY overpriced for tools. Now I know that there are some items you cant find elsewhere but it is kind of like Snap On tools. If you need that one specialty item then ok, you need it. But be a bit resourceful and look around a bit.
Example- I needed to do a barrel swap on an AR10 (Armalite). It has a proprietary barrel nut and the specific wrench for it was $80 bucks or so. I looked in a MSC Industrial catalog and purchased a pin spanner that will go from 3/4" to six inches with interchangable pins for $45.
Now I have a barrel nut wrench for any AR platform rifle.
Bench blocks- Hockey pucks work great. The one that Brownells sells for AR sight bases is great, but I got by with hockey pucks and a couple of hardwood blocks for a long time.
Be creative- You will save yourself a bunch in the end.

I agree. You can find the tools cheeper, some are not as good. This is the best kit out there, just take the list and shop around for the tool on the list.
