I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

"Dirty" Harry Callahan to Scorpio (Clint Eastwood and Andrew Robinson in Dirty Harry)

If youre going to shoot, shoot....don't talk. --Tuco, the good, the bad and the ugly

One of my favorites. Even back then the old "I'm going to tell you how I'm going to kill you so you'll have time to kill me" trope was a little bit tiresome.

Tuco and Blondie both used this one:

"There are two kinds of people in the world my friend. The ones with the rope around their necks and the ones that do the cutting."

Lucky Ned Pepper- I call that bold talk for a one eyed fat man.

Rooster Cogburn-Fill your hands you son of a bitch!

Was that the one with Katharine Hepburn? If so I think that has one of the best one liners in Hollywood westerns. John Wayne and (I think) Katharine Hepburn are surrounded by outlaws. One of them yells at him to give up and Wayne yells back "We got a gatling gun!" One of the outlaws scoffs and says "yeah, but you don't know how to use it!"

Wayne (or maybe Hepburn) then rip off a 100 round burst that cuts a swath completely around their position. Then there's a second of silence and Wayne yells "Ain't that how it works?"

No, the scene with Lucky Ned Pepper is in True Grit, the movie with Kim Darby. Rooster Cogburn with Katherine Hepburn is the sequel.

"Go ahead, skin it. Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens."
(Slap) "I said throw down, boy!"

Several years back when we were visiting Tucson I picked up a book at a thrift store. The book was called "Inventing Wyatt Earp" and it was written around 1995.

The book wasn't so much about Earp himself (though it did go through his life story) but rather it was about how the myth and legend of Wyatt Earp, Lawman, came to be.

It also discussed the two big-budget Hollywood blockbusters that came out in the mid 90's, "Wyatt Earp" with Kevin Costner, and of course "Tombstone" with Kurt Russell.

What was fascinating to me was the fact that the makers of "Tombstone" actually went out of their way to try and get many of the historical details right. Everything from the costumes, the sets, and even the slang and lingo, they tried to make "period correct" as much as possible.

Unlike a lot of old west confrontations, the famous "shootout at the OK corral" happened in the middle of the afternoon in the middle of town, which meant there were plenty of witnesses to what happened. Not only that, there were two trials - a "Coroners Inquest" and an actual manslaughter trial of Wyatt Earp (both trials exonerated Earp of any wrongdoing.)

Since there was a trial, there were contemporaneous transcripts and records. Which means that much of the dialogue in the film is accurate, including the part where Doc Holliday's shotgun had been discharged and Frank McLaury yelled "I've got you now, you son of a bitch!" and Holliday replied "Blaze away. You're a daisy if you do!" and then shot McLaury with a revolver.

That account was taken directly from a contemporary newspaper account of the shootout. "You're a daisy" and "I'm your huckleberry" actually were slang terms used at that time.

When I first saw the movie, I assumed that it was the usual Hollywood fiction and that characters like Josephine Marcus (Dana Delaney), Curley Bill (Powers Boothe) and Johnny Ringo (Michael Beihn) were made up for the story. But in fact, they were all real people and all involved in the activities in and around Tombstone.

(I mean, c'mon "Johnny Ringo?" Was there ever a more made-up sounding name than that? So imagine my surprise at finding out that yes, there WAS a notorious gunfighter in Tombstone, AZ by that name.)

Getting back to topic, the quote you referenced, where Earp threatens the bullying card dealer Johnny Tyler (Billy Bob Thornton) and drags him out into the street by his earlobe - that also actually happened.

@Martinjmpr Yeah, there were a number of articles at the time that talked about the lengths they went to for "Tombstone". IIRC, Kurt Russell was apparently very insistent on making it as accurate as possible. IMO, it was a much better film than Costner's. I never understood Hollywood logic in trying to release duplicative films at the same time.
