I am looking at getting one of these phones.

can you tell me more about the monthly cost and the "unlimited" amount they are talking about.

I currently have the LG Dare touchscreen, has internet, unlimited everything except minutes.
From reading on the web, it seems as if people are saying the cost for all the extras is out of this world.

I do like how it can tether, but not really a big necessity since I would have the phone...kinda the whole point.

I have the Dare as well, and was really excited about the newest Droid coming out.

Don't pay to tether just root it. As for cost my wife and I pay like $100 per month for a family plan (about to go up for more minutes in a couple months) and then $30 per Droid for internet and email... Unlimited everything accept for daytime airtime. Depending on who you or she works for there are corporate discounts available too that vary and can chop almost 1/4 off your monthly bill in some cases too.

So, not cheap but at the same time I have not only coverage but full 3G just about everywhere I go including a drive last week from Colorado to Nebraska by way of Wyoming back highways. I'm VERY impressed and was sick of T-Mobile's empty promises for coverage and broadband for the last 8 years. You get what you pay for and this phone is amazing!

I just ditched the iPhone - that's a long and painful story - for a Droid last weekend. Paying about $160 for 3 phones 1400 min, unlimited txt and data .. that's with a 10% corporate plan discount. Still saving about $60 a month over AT&T BS for the same three lines, txt and data. ATT can rot in hell!

When comparing an iPhone on AT&T's network to a Droid on Verizon you're getting a LOT more all around for the same price or less in most cases.

Didn't the Droid just get rooted today?

I have an iPhone. It's alright... since I got the phone for free and no longer have a contract, I won't complain.

How good is the browser? Does it pass the acid tests?

well you said unlimited, but I was reading where they said "unlimited" is truly only 5 gb of data or something like that. my Dare is truly unlimited, but the droid is not from what I have read.
I get on my phone for email daily, search all kinds of things, get on websites, on here etc.

It was rooted before today but posted on forums officially today. Browser is great. I know some people opt for the Dolphin browser but I personally have had great luck with the built in browser so I haven't even installed Dolphin.

I've never heard anything like that band I send/receive hundreds of emails per day along with tons of web browsing, Google maps, mp3 downloading and video streaming. Sounds like some users of inferior providers are trying fling some mud.

okay just something I read today while doing online search. reading the others I didn't see anything like that but you never know with verizon.

Can you post a link of how I can get a Droid for $100 without adding years to my contract? That's what I'm interested in. ;)

I think that's an internet rumor. I think the BOGO is on Droid/Eris or Eris/Eris and not Droid/Droid but I could be wrong. We got ours from Best Buy who (after a fair amount of convincing) price matched Dell.com who had them for $119/ea.

Verizon's strictly mobile broadband plans have a 5 gig cap per month unless you're grandfathered in. How do I know? I just bought a MiFi so I can get broadband on my iPhone down here in Pueblo since we don't rate 3G from AT&T. Of course I still have to pay for 3G.

All said and told the biggest pain is financial at first.. the Driod is free after rebate, same with the other 2 phones we snagged (LG Envy 3's). But there are activation fees, Verizon loves itself fees, fees for all kinds of stupid shit leading up to the initial bill being approximately double what the expected normal monthly bill will be. That's annoying, but again, to get away from AT&T and that rolling frakking nightmare known as the iPhone, it's worth every frakking penny.

My over all impressions after the first week are this:

Iphone .. easier to use over all, ease of configuration and a much broader application set. Seems there is better general integration with app to os functionality, but that comes at a cost - only single app running at once. That saves a ton of OS complexity, but can be constraining to some users, just not the majority (e.g. the 80/20 rule)

Droid .. a bit more thinking involved in the setup and configuration, but still fairly easy if you take your time and are somewhat technical. Applications are available, not some of my favorites are ported, but I'll live. There are some more hoops to jump through for some things but again, being fairly technical myself, I don't mind too much. The OS is a multi-tasking OS that is user friendly. You must have a app manager tool to kill off apps that stay resident after exiting the interface or run in the background..

Additional pro's in my mind are - swapable battery, simple micro-SD card upgrades (not even an iphoney option), more flexibility in managing the over all look, feel and configuration. If you're really wanting to geek out on your droid, you can root the thing and go wild - not in my current game plan.

Cons - again mostly apps options and over all refinement of the interface and configurations go to the iPhoney for a slicker user experience. Heavy emphasis on U S E R! Not power or geek users

The way I look at this is that these two, Droid and iPhoney are at two ends of the smart phone spectrum. One is better refined and keeps the user from screwing themselves up too much, the other offers the in the weeds geek options that many really want (still only a small subset of the customer market). There are plenty of middle of the road solutions starting with the Blackberry (just as evil as AT&T) product lines.

Then there is the whole provider debacle. AT&T is just sucking in the what, 3 years since they adopted the iPhoney. Their infrastructure just isn't sufficient both in coverage and capacity. Customer service is an absolute joke, if you can even call the way they treat the general customer population when faced with an off script issue.. service.

Verizon.. well these guys are honestly just too damn big to be effective from a customer service perspective. So long as you don't have anything that forces them to move off script or off the basic subset of issues and scripted resolutions, you're fine. If you have something that has to do with billing screwups or a technical issue outside the norm.. get ready to want to club someone repeatedly!

Verizon has a much stronger infrastructure, though it still is being grown and improved. All said and told, Verizon wins the infrastructure battle, but ties AT&T for general customer service capability.

Be willing to take some time to learn to use and tune your Droid if you go that route. The biggest issue I've had is finding the balance between functionality and battery life. Which now that I have found what I believe to be that balance (read compromise) the battery life is just a shade better than the iPhoney.

Interesting thread.[Score]

I'm stuck with ATT, as much as I hate them. Went looking at phones this week. The old phone is on it's last legs. I will probably end up with a basic phone. Reception in my area is becoming non-existent.
This will be the final end to the old phone.[Clays] POS[BooHoo]

I've been with Verizon for about 10 years now, and their activation fee is some what new. Also, as of a just a few months ago, you are still able to change your plan without any fees or extending your contract (unless you add a line). I've found that to be very handy if you are a person who likes to experiment with different plans, or you go on a trip out of the country or something.

i am going to head to verizon this week and see what they can do for me. It is time for a new phone and I really want something faster than my LG Dare, as well as some apps so i can play games[Beer]

You can get a phone at the extended contract discount price, and they will add the price of the phone to your phone bill, so you don't have to pay for it up front.

I've been hearing a lot about that, but I thought Google already released their phone with T-mobile called the G1 or something. I don't generally follow tech stuff though, so I guess I was thinking of something else. This is really cool, except I'm on Verizon so it won't be available to me anyway.

Android is Google's mobile phone operating system first introduced on the G1. The newest version of Android is exclusive (for now) to the newly released Motorola Droid which is also exclusive to Verizon. So, if you have Verizon you're in luck. HTH

Right, but I was talking about the new phone that Google is coming out with that they will be selling directly to the consumer. It is a GSM phone though, so no bueno for Verizon. It's cool because Google will be able to do whatever they want with the phone and not be held back by phone companies having a say in what goes on the phone.

The Google phone isn't quite official yet but you can go get a Droid right now if you want one. If I've learned anything it's buy what you need today instead of waiting for what 'might be' tomorrow while making due with what you bought yesterday.

Oh I'm just talking about the Google phone for conversation sake. I'd like a Droid, but not enough to pay for one.
