Any Linux users here?
Maybe a dumb question but what are some cool or unique Linux programs to try out?
I am running a puppy Linux on an older netbook mostly cause I can. Going through all the programs and trying to see the Linux way.

Been using unix/xenix since the early 1980s, and current user/developer on Unix/Linux and *nix-like systems.

It's not about apps - though most apps for DOS/Win/Mac are available on, or have analogues available. I guess if you're into included apps, mahjongg is pretty good on most systems as part of the included games package, and they've got solitaire versions, too.

If you're talking mainstream, load the Steam client and play most games, or load Apache OpenOffice for productivity.

Linux/Unix are the host to the gold standard of compiler/development environments, on which most others are based or derived, and offers unparalleled freedom and power from the command line if you're an advanced user.

I've even heard that Microsoft is giving up on PowerShell in favor of Bash.

Whatever, I'm a Korn Shell guy.

I hope you're patching it still!

I prefer Krita (https://krita.org/en/) to Gimp for photo editing.
I've started using Guake Terminal (http://guake-project.org/) instead of the regular one (because you can map it to any key, I have mine mapped to the menu key between the right alt and right ctrl keys on this Dell keyboard) makes getting in and out of Terminal quick and easy.
CopyQ (https://sourceforge.net/projects/copyq/) is a pretty cool clipboard manager (and there's Windows and Mac versions of it available too).

What kind of stuff are you wanting to do with it?

I used Puppy on several older machines over the years. It was very fast having the entire OS loaded into RAM. It was a little kludgy getting updates and using the PUP system to load applications. I started off with Red Hat using YUM as a package manager but now prefer Debian based APT.

Like 95% of computer users, I surf the web, listen to music, watch You Tube videos...and hang out on a couple of gun boards. Just about any distribution takes care of my basic computing needs. Guymager, GParted, and Belena Etcher are my current need to have applications added once I have gotten a new system up and running. Being able to download an ISO and boot from a USB drive makes my back up needs much simpler.

I am currently using a Raspberry Pi 4 8 GB as my primary machine. Here is my current system:

Static hostname: cstone-rpi
Icon name: computer
Operating System: Ubuntu 20.10
Kernel: Linux 5.8.0-1016-raspi
Architecture: arm64

I have it connected to my living room TV via HDMI, and a Logitech wireless keyboard and trackball. I also have a portable 15.6" LCD monitor for those times when I want to take my computer with me. It is a pretty nice system for very little expense.

I do keep a raspberry Pi 4 for access to the internet in the utility room. It is handy to look up stuff as you work on hardware. I use 2 Raspberry PI's for a DNS filter (pi-hole).

I use Mint on my laptop. Had a small form factor computer with Mint running my TV. Kinda miss it. I have a Raspberry Pi with the NES, SNES, Sega, etc emulators on it. In theory, it works. I set it up and haven?t played it yet. It?s been like 4 years....

At some point I plan on replacing my Rokus with Raspberry Pis running Linux and just a web browser in kiosk mode (I kept researching all sorts of media programs like Kodi and what-not, but realized that the best thing would be just use a web browser with a custom home page set up like a media interface ... I've also got Plex running on my Synology NAS so it would be one of the links and that takes care of all my locally hosted media).

I was hoping that Brave would come out with an ARM compatible version, but I'm not convinced I need all the extra privacy stuff (just good ad blocking) since I'll just be running BitChute, Rumble, Youtube etc on it.

I just dropped in here for the nerd talk.

It keeps me humble and reminds me how truly stupid I am with technology.

Thanks.

Firefox is evil (Mozilla is more woke than Coke and Target). I expect future versions to block its users from using sites like Bitchute and LBRY at some point.

I've heard rumors of ARM Brave coming soon but if not that I'll probably go with Vivaldi (made by the guy that started Opera).

Mozilla, FireFox, is one of the earliest browsers. That they are still here today, is a testament to their fortitude.

They are not evil, nor woke, but rather are champions of privacy (for a web browser.)

They allow you to run plugins, that will stop ads, and scripts, both very scary on the web.

You can't hardly go wrong making Mozilla FireFox, your default browser.

They fired Brendan Eich (one of the founders of Mozilla) because he supported Prop 8 in CA ... in other words, he opposed same-sex marriage at the same time that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton did so publicly.

Did you read the link I posted above?

They are not champions of privacy (they were back when the aforementioned Brendan Eich ran the show), they are not champions of free speech they are woke, authoritarian silicon valley insiders no better than Google, Apple, Amazon or Microsoft.

I used their browser from the earliest public betas until Brave came out (Brave is 100 times more privacy and security focused than Firefox, and will use extensions and plugins as well, but most of the ad and script blocking is built in).

Mozilla is evil. And if you stick with them you'll get to find out when they start censoring your internet for your own good.
