Yes, yes it can. I?m willing to bet this goes nationwide or at least some form of Universal Basic Income, within 2 years. I hope I?m wrong but with the current gross negligence of monetary policy, poor financial/economic education as a whole, and the latest updates on the 4th stimulus package they are now bringing to the table, it ain?t going to be pretty when it all comes to roost.

Meh, the funding is private. The rest of the article is about publicly funded programs though. My initial reaction to this kind of thing is always negative, but similar kind of experiments have been tried before with positive results. I don't know that it'd be successful on a national scale; but I don't know that it wouldn't be successful either. Neither does anyone else who says that they do.
I can say that if stuff like this continues, there is a lot of fat that needs to be cut out of the budget elsewhere. That of course is the problem, as that other stuff never seems to go away.
Local people of color only
"And it is the first program to limit participation strictly to Black, Indigenous and people of color communities."
Not sure how this part is ok.

"We are focusing on people of color".
Total horseshit. If there is a need, there is a need, regardless of color. When you make color a requirement you are creating a racist program, pure and simple.
“ we are only giving people of color money due to racism” because Clown world

(Didn't read it) If this is truly from private funds I don't give a shit if they throw it in the fireplace.

What if it works though? Honest question. We don't have to think too hard on it, because if it does work, it'll probably be ended. But what if it works?

Im not really sure what "works" would mean. But if it works through private funding, then great. Just like religious charities, etc. Doling out even more taxpayer money is a giant f-that IMHO.
Now, do away with ALL entitlements and we might be able to talk about a small UBI for all...not just minorities. That'll never happen though. Entitlements are vote catchers.

The article posted doesn't say anything about reparations. Maybe that's on purpose, or maybe whomever is doing this thinks that black people have it the worst in that city and chose them as the target demographic for their experiment. Maybe it's both, or neither, I don't know.

You really didn't see REPARATIONS anywhere in either story???
Not even in the title??
LA Times
Illinois city becomes first to offer reparations to Black residents
MSN,com
Evanston, Illinois, has become the first city in the United States to offer reparations to Black Americans for loss of generational wealth due to slavery.

DNA test to show lineage. No test, no money. Fairly easy.
?will give low-income families of color in the city $500 per month with no rules on how they can spend it.?
Yay! Free money for crack, meth, and malt liquor.

Universal income like any other welfare based income is always going to work for some and help them out of poverty and it is always going to be a waste of time, money and effort for others. In the end, not sure how any of these systems would pan out over the long run as in if you give someone a basic living wage do other welfare options such as rent assistance or ebt $$ then eventually fade out and if you are giving money to people for rent, food and other things and you then exchange that for a UBI does it really matter in the end?
Ya'll don't see the bright side of things.
These are wonderful destinations to send our homeless dregs too on one way bus tickets. Instead of spending $34,000/year per homeless person like Denver does (on what???) we can take care of the problem here in Colorado for the low, low price of $300/each.
AON - ALL OR NONE.
More darker foundation and makeup will sell well in Oakland.

Dang, $300 bus ticket to Oakland?
Southwest probably can beat that.
They are going back to the cattle call method of loading the planes now.

Return on investment (transportation cost) is good for future Oakland resident who qualifies.

I would think a Caucasian Oakland resident who meets the income requirements would have immediate standing for a racial discrimination lawsuit.
Private funding = whatever they want.
Public finance = crazy.
Anyways. Corona stimulus is getting the andrew yangs 1000/mo traction.
$1000/ mo x 350mil = $1,000,000 honda civic coming soon due to hyper inflation.

You can?t be discriminated against if you?re Caucasian. They wouldn?t have a leg to stand on.

Privately funded public programs very quickly become publicly funded as soon as it runs out of money the first time. "This is a critical program that provides x people with critical funding to live. We MUST fund this program from the public resources". Or it starts with 10% public funding, next year 25%, next year..... Then when this small program is fully funded and people have accepted it as a normal use of public tax funds, it will expand.

It'll potentially expand in size and scope until every race is painfully aware of their "value" to the city, state, etc.
Besides discrimination, I am worried thst this stupid idea going national.
Idea like or similar to this is getting many national traction.
Student loan forgiveness and Yang's $1000-2000 idea is very dangerous to our economy.
