View Full Version : The state is ruining my "experience" yet again (Camping restrictions)

For myself and my dad and brother back in Missouri, our absolute favorite place in CO to camp is deep back along Cement Creek and NEVER in an established campground. Now, CO is ruining even that experience for us.

My family has always practiced a "leave no sign" type of camping and we hate being camped near others where our enjoyment of the quiet and serenity of the mountains isn't ruined by other campers nearby. So now CO can (try to) get a little more revenue and control from folks like me and ruin what was once a great American pastime.

Just another nail in the coffin for what was once an amazing state.

Dispersed camping to be banned in popular Colorado mountain valley

Camping will look different this year in one of Colorado's most beautiful mountain valleys.

Dispersed camping is coming to end for six popular backcountry drainages nestled in the Crested Butte Valley. To ensure a sustainable future for both recreational camping and the natural beauty of backcountry, officials will begin to transition dispersed camping areas to designated camping sites only for backcountry areas along Slate River, Washington Gulch, Kebler Pass, Lake Irwin, Brush Creek, Cement Creek, and Gothic Roads.

"The changes will help to reduce impacts to the landscape and natural ecosystems, as well as the development of non-system routes, and sanitation issues," the press release states. "Designated sites will also help contain campfires to reduce forest fires."

Starting this spring, camping will only be allowed at designed sites in areas along Slate River and Washington Gulch Roads. These same restrictions will be rolled out across five additional camping areas this summer and fall including Kebler Pass, Lake Irwin, Brush Creek, Cement Creek, and Gothic Roads.

Designated camp sites will be marked with a two-foot-tall 6x6 post. Attached to the post will be a camping symbol along with an associated site number. Permanent metal fire rings will also be installed at each designated site.

According to officials, the goal is to have more than 200 valley wide sites designated come spring 2022.

Signage will be installed along the roadsides directing visitors toward dispersed camping areas, camping information, and notifying them when no camping areas lie ahead.
The United States Forest Service (USFS) has partnered with the Gunnison Valley Sustainable Tourism and Outdoor Recreation (STOR) committee to help carry out these new plans and fund the designated camping project.

Visitors are encouraged to have backup plan in the event that all the designated sites are full, especially during peak travel times. For the latest information on dispersed camping in the Crested Butte Valley, please visit https://crestedbuttemountainbike.com and https://gunnisoncrestedbutte.com.

I was going to say that there probably aren't a ton of "liberals" around Crested Butte, but I was just there on Monday and I'd say that there probably are. Mountain towns are weird.

What does that have to do with it? The liberals in the cities think they know what's best for everyone, even those that live in the areas they know nothing about.

Because the liberals that don't live there aren't going to have anything to say about the homeless population. The liberals that do live there probably won't either.

Otherwise, I know what you're getting at and am on board with what you mean.

Did you know that of the 64 counties in Colorado, only 12 passed the bill to reintroduce wolves? I bet you can guess that of the 12 counties on the western slope where the wolves would actually be reintroduced, only 2 voted to pass that bill. That means that 10 counties of people who don't live where wolves would be reintroduced by the state voted to have that happen.

IDK what the answer is, but it's unfortunate that so many don't play by the rules such as, #1)you pack it in you pack it out, #2) when a fire ban is in place it means NO CAMPFIRE EVEN IF NO ONE IS AROUND TO ENFORCE IT, #3) dig a hole for your crap and bury it when you're done camping. ETC

And in the end, this leads to someone in government to make the decision to force everyone into one little box and it sucks.

Same type restrictions on Tiger Road near Dillion. If you check out all the roof top tents driving around your have a good idea of the impact the population has on the land.

Why does everything have to be about the liberal bogeyman? You guys are exhausting

I think the problem is too damn many people and most are dumb and disrespectful of land and nature. The solutions are made by politicians that have never camped or been in nature.

Why are you blaming "the state" instead of the thoughtless a-holes who leave trash and burning fire rings around? All "the state" is doing is protecting the land - which is literally their job.

Blame the inconsiderate moron campers for being idiots, not US Forest Service for doing what it's supposed to do to protect the forests.

We could sell all the public land, then everyone just go camp up in Wyoming. Pass that Texas buck.

I remember seeing a map of the counties that voted to introduce wolves. I wondered if maybe it was a strategy to get people out of the woods and into condos/hotel rooms.

Exactly.

We haven't been able to camp in 'The Park" on Monument for something like 19 years now unless you walk in (I think you can still walk in) because of the d-bags that f'd it up for everyone else. 2002 was the last time were were up there, camping trip with all the boys to send one off to Iraq (he came back, twice). Idiots shooting up trees, moving barriers to tear up hills that were off limits due to wheeling and erosion, etc. Same with general shooting up there. Morons shooting when/where others are hiking and biking in the area. All they had to do was go up or off the road a bit and find a proper backstop. Now the whole damn thing is closed to shooting except one area off Rampart few venture into.

Can't blame the USFS, county, or state for that.

So citizens can't camp, but illegal aliens will get housing assistance from the state?

Not getting the connection here.

Unless illegal aliens are being allowed to camp in the dispersed camping areas that are off limits to citizens. Is that what's happening?

We used to camp at the Buffalo Creek Gun Club for almost 10 years. Then the USFS said they were going to raise the rent from a few hundred to many thousand $$$ per year unless we opened to the public. They then said nobody could camp there. It was stupid. I hate campgrounds and we always dry camped for a week at a time. I used to pull the camper up there in OCT every year to spend a week by myself to sort life out. We sold the camper a year later. Fuck them. 85782

There's just too many damn people here now. Ruined a lot of the whole "Colorado experience" for outdoorsy folks.

I never paid to camp in CO until a few years ago......at places that were "dispursed" camping areas before (was that even a term a few years ago?). My brother and I would get in the old VW camper van and just start driving in a general direction, look at a map for a potentially good spot to fish, find a fire road in the area and just set up. Great memories.

Good hunting spots are now full of drunken idiots partying all night, fucking the whole area. 4x4 trails shut down. Morons walking right into your fishing lane. Hippies starting fires every year. The list goes on.

Sad, but everyone wants to be the last one to move to a cool place.

If you are dispersed camping it makes it hard for the fish cop to find you. They are hard up for money as it is. Now if you would all just camp in designated areas together it makes it so much easier for them to find you and write tickets.

I have to drive by a spot in the National Forest to get to my place. It's a popular place to camp. Just about every time someone camps there, they leave litter lying around when they leave, bottles and cans in the fire ring, and/or fire still burning. This last Summer was the worst I've seen it. Idiots left containers of used oil, oil filters, etc. I'm thinking, WTF, did they go camping and change their oil while there? I don't understand why they can't haul their crap back to the big city?

I wish the USFS would shut it down so I don't have to clean up after the bastards anymore.
