View Full Version : Speed Trap?
The route I take to work begins with a very wide, two lane road, medium/low density, all residential traffic. It's labeled at 35, and I routinely do 44, 9 miles over the limit.
Aurora has just put up a speed thing, which tells you how fast you are going (I know how fast I am going), in both directions.
I notice as I go by that a "blue light" is flashing. Is it taking my picture? Am I gonna get like 10 speeding tickets in a row?
I looked harder at it today when I drove by, and it is relatively thick, for a device that just measures and displays speed. Pretty easy for a camera to be in there too.
Should I camouflage myself by wearing a mask as I drive by?
Or is it as I expect it to be, a deterrent?
What pisses me off royally, is that this is the perfect road to drive in to work. My other option is to drive by an elementary school. Bitches.
I could also go out to the main road, but that is dangerous as heck.
Thanks in advance.
If it's a speed trap, covering your face won't help. The ticket will be mailed to the address on the vehicle registration matching the plates.
The other option is to not speed.
Seriously?
Why not just drive the speed limit?
They’re not going to send you tickets from that machine taking your picture. That’s the photo vans and stop lights, and they’re only legally enforceable when delivered to you in person...mailed isn’t technically enforceable, last I heard.
There is a third option. You could hitch up to it, and then since speed is relative to the observer, it would ignore you as a parked car. Bonus points: Make it think the cars you pass are speeding.

This is a new, permanent installation, which is why I am asking for help, as I may need to change my route, and I do not have good options.
I'm surprised (and disheartened) at all the "just go the speed limit" posts.

The blue flashy things are just there to scare you. I usually spot em and see how fast it will read in that short distance.
If you do get caught by a red light camera/speed camera/speed trap van, they will mail you a notification to pay. Don't. They may or may not attempt to serve you the ticket later (has to be within 90 days of violation). If a cop is knocking on your door soon after you get popped, don't answer.
After 90 days, they can't do jack.
My experience with speed and red light cameras is that you will see a bright white flash. (Just like a regular camera)
My wife got a payment notification for the red light camera off Vasquez in Commerce city. We ignored it. (It was her sister driving anyway)
If, somehow you are served with the ticket BY A LEO, you're on the hook.

If you are going to intentionally speed, be prepared to pay the fine.
Dont want to pay the fine, dont speed.
Thanks 00tec. That jibes with my original thought process, that this is just a deterrent, but it is bad/scary when you have this kind of deterrent (drive the speed limit, or else) on a daily travelled road.
My next thought is to take it up with the Aurora City Council, because unless they have evidence to the danger of speeding on this road (which I have driven daily for the last 8 years), they shouldn't be pushing people onto an Elementary School Road, or a main artery, unless necessary.
I always talk about how I donate to the "cop ball swim" when I get pulled over.
What is that? It's an inside joke that I've never lived down.
ETA: In a more serious tone, I am guessing the thing flashes lights and reads the speed of a single vehicle within what, 150 yards? But I am not there. Isn't the "non politically correct" answer: Drive the speed limit in front of the flashy thing? I mean, that's what people do here with the trailers. And then, as soon as they pass em... yeah...
Thanks 00tec. That jibes with my original thought process, that this is just a deterrent, but it is bad/scary when you have this kind of deterrent (drive the speed limit, or else) on a daily travelled road.

Honestly though, complaining about it to some elected official that might benefit from ticket revenue is how you get a cop posted to the street.
They'll get the evidence from you.

Dont want to pay the fine, dont speed.
I am always prepared to pay the fine, which is why I go 9 over. This is a pretty standard/ok fine.
But this speed trap is on my daily route to work. It's unavoidable, unless I choose to change my route and drive by the elementary school, or get on the main artery.
This is very reason why I live in cities with higher speed limits. Washington between 136th and 144th use to be 60MPH (or was it 55) until the darn Outlet came in. Now it is only 45mph. :(
Speed limit are set artificially low. Engineering safety studies are ignored and limits are set by revenue greedy law enforcement agencies and politicians.
COVID has shown what the free flow safe speed of most roads. I-25 through Denver should be 65-75, not 55.
100% of all traffic fines and fees should go to the state lottery, not government. Law enforcement should never be revenue driven.

Are you doing 44mph in a residential? Or are you trying to describe traffic that originates from a residential area? What is on either side of the street? If there are any houses, get fucked. If it's open fields, use your words like a big boy so we can better understand your crying.

Who the fuck is pushing you onto an elementary school road. That would actually be a personal choice on your part. FFS...
How many speeding tickets can you absorb, before you change your behavior?
This is pure, government, control, or attempted control, without cause or reason, resulting in unattended consequences like my (and other people) driving through a school zone.

If there are any houses, get fucked.
This, we just moved out of a neighborhood that had shit bags going 45+ (estimated) through the hood on a regular basis, I flipped off many of them from my yard, but most were going too fast to notice. Again, if you are speeding through a residential area, get bent.

People regularly drive past my house at 85+. They don't bother me. Truckers intentionally engaging their jake brakes do.
Yeah, this isn't a drag race thread. Big farting cars.
This is a big road, that easily supports 45 mph, but is labeled at 35 mph.

wear a mask in your car. if it's a photo radar (which it likely isn't as it's not flashing a strobe that you've reported) they need to see your face to give you a ticket.
That's what I thought. They cannot prove that I am behind the wheel if they can't recognize me.
Put on my covid mask, and/or otherwise disguise myself, and then it could be anyone, driving my car.
I guess I'm just old school, if the limit is posted, I "try" to stay close to that posted limit. Can't say I always do on the main roads, but on residential roads, I am slow, I don't want to kill anybody, I have kids, when they were little, speeders used to PISS ME OFF in the neighborhood. Now my kids are older, so I don't get as mad, but I've yelled at a few a-holes driving through like speed racer. I drive slow for the kiddos and the soccer moms yelling at their kiddos as they back out of the driveway. I don't like to be constrained to slow speeds, but generally speaking, I don't get worked up about it anymore, there is plenty of shit going on to piss me off as it is...

COVID has prevented from driving reasonable and prudent speeds. I would say that is 115 to 125mph. Beyond 125mph is fun for short bursts, but requires too much attention and slow-down-speedup for any real distance.. Well unless it is early Sunday morning away from any large city.
Haven't been to Germany in more than a year.

For as many prudent speed limit guys profess to be here, I have a hard time believing they don't drive with traffic like every Bob, Tom and Steve. But as in most cases on the internet, people are suddenly holier than swiss cheese if they think they can compare to "bad" behavior and profess to not speeding at all. Riiiiiiiiight. When everyone else is speeding, it doesn't count, right?
FTR, where speed limits apply equally to all vehicles it is a lot like schools teaching a class based on the dumbest person in the entire building; instead it is the heaviest and fattest thing on the road driven in less-optimal conditions by a less-optimal driver. It is a government rule, no different than bans on magazines or slide fires. The existence of a government rule does not make violation of it a biblical sin, all laws are independent of morality. Speeding can be unsafe. I am not advocating for it. But there are certainly a lot of holy people here that never partake in it [ROFL2] and when it boils down, it's not a magic science number, it is in many places, arbitrarily applied.
If someone dutifully follows every regulation simply because they exist.... yikes.
I for one, have ignored the "left turn on arrow only" sign on the stoplight by my house so many times, I have technically ran a red light about 3,000 times. I lived there before anyone had the bright idea they needed a sign to "save lives". You can see all oncoming traffic for 500 yards in a nice gentle curve and it is not high traffic. 45MPH highway. I'm not going to waste 10,000 minutes of my life sitting on my thumb because an entirely unnecessary rule told me to. I'm not any safer for it, nor is anyone else, and I didn't become any safer when they put the sign up. YMMV.
Just drive safe whatever you all do, and respect residential and neighborhoods.
I like to stick close to the speed limits. If the speed limit is ridiculously low for a particular road I still stick to it and piss off all of the people bottled up behind me. It?s my way of getting them to petition the city or county to raise the speed limit on that stretch of road.
My morning commutes entertain me. I make sure to leave myself time to get where I?m going and if something unexpected causes me to be late it doesn?t bother me. When I see people in a stupid hurry to get to their jobs I figure they are probably just a shitty, irresponsible employee and are scared they might get fired because they can?t get to work on time.

Pretty sure the automated speed traps need to be manned by a person in Colorado. I see them as a white van along Speer Blvd in Denver and along Moorhead Ave and North Broadway in Boulder all the time. There will be a person sitting in the van monitoring the equipment.
What you are seeing is just one of those tow behind warning systems that flashes the light to let you know that you are speeding but that's all it does.
They must be getting a lot of complaints along that stretch of road. Eventually one day if the speeding continues you will come across a real cop parked in an inconspicuous place and you will get pulled over.
The passenger complains too much over 120 in the pickup.
Kick the passenger out....
Get a new, younger model of passenger that doesnt complain?
I partially blame it on NOS and NOS energy drink.

They have now put up another pair. So on this feeder road, park on the left, houses on the right, I now have 4 chances of getting a speeding ticket, per day.
Today I took the route home in front of the school. Much more pleasant. No flashing lights (it was 5PM), etc.
Monday, I will try the artery route, because I do not want to drive through school zones.

Paranoia.
I've blasted by hundreds of those speed signs on highways and divided roads and have never been sent a ticket in 30 years. They've only recently began using red/blue lights on them as well.
Same as Irving. I run 10-15 over almost everywhere it's safe and there's no chance of pedestrians or bikes, especially residential. My son was hit by a teen driver riding his bike when he was 12 and spent 5 days in a coma and suffered a mild TBI. Slow the fuck down in residential neighborhoods.
When our kids were younger I used to keep a kick ball handy and roll it into the street when I saw someone speeding towards the house. Most people eventually WTF Up.
I speed everywhere, except in residentials.
This. Pretty much everyone goes faster than the speed limits around here. I just keep up with traffic so I'm not an obstacle. You can usually get away with it if you're in wad of traffic moving the same speed. Just don't lead the wad or drive in a manner that gets you noticed. As you get more experience with driving, I think you learn how to not stand out in the crowd. There are places you can easily get away with it, and others that will get you a ticket at a high percentage rate.
I do not speed in residential areas and school zones. I don't want to hit some kid or their dog.

Speed limits are set based on the lowest common denominator. The 85yr old driving the...85932
...and so are passing lanes.
Speed limits are based on the 85th percentile in the in 1950s... not many cars capable of driving safely at 65, hence the lower limits. Today's vehicles are far more safe and capable of driving safely at 80-100 mph.
Speed limits are set by corrupt police and lawmakers drunk on power and revenue.

Just because the car is capable, doesn't mean the operator is.
Even those not jerking off with their phones while driving.

Case in point, all the accidents on straight sections of i25 heading towards fort Collins. I miss it being pretty empty 15 yrs ago.
Speed limits in residential areas are based on the much higher survival rate of being struck by a vehicle traveling 25mph or less.

I think those 85 year old should sign up for Andretti (81) experience and learn. Or learn for another 81 year old Jackie Stwert.

I think at a certain age people should have to retake their driving test. If they pass then good for them. If not then no more driving.
Of course there are probably a shit ton of non-senior drivers that shouldn?t have licenses either.

You mean 8 spark plugs. S65 Engines goes upto 8400rpm and it was closest to the GP2 engine at the time of production.
BTW. I am not the one who driving e93 m3 nor riding gear.

No. I meant did you take two plugs out of the GSXR.
An e93 Ms should be around 4.5 0-60 and 13.2-13.5 quarter mile.
Even a GSXR750G (think 1986) would run around an 11.2 quarter mile.
The only thing I can think of is the GSXR had two plugs removed...
My guess is that gsxr was not wanna get involved with M3 being late to BMW of denver service appointment.

I've been exploring other avenues, and you wouldn't figure it, but there are schools on a lot of avenues.
So, I think going to the artery is the right thing to do, and I have been doing that recently.
It's not a great solution, but it will do.
Passed a motorcycle cop, speed gun deployed, on the artery this morning. I am sure I was going 9+ over the limit, probably 12+.
If I am not his target, who is?
Anyway, I guess I should help give closure to this thread.
I will not drive past four fucking speed trap lights on my way to work (less than 5 miles)
I will not drive past schools.
I do have a couple of artery routes, and will use those going forward.
Still triggered you think they are speed traps. They have one for almost a year now i25 by loveland set for 55, people still drive by doing 80 all day.
The speed trap is trying to avoid them and putting yourself in the ?artery? where they are actually running speed traps...

It's a random luck of the draw. They look for the weak one in the herd, to go after. If it's rush hour, they gauge their potential for getting in to traffic, as well as catching the offender. Compared to amount of traffic (as we know) would hit their brakes cause... COP!
Also depends how much over one is going. . Bottom line is. Once you're on their radar, they're coming.

Yeah, I drive across the state regularly and try to keep it at 9 over or less, but sometimes you just have to blow the cobwebs out of the carburetor. Some years ago I was stopped by a CSP officer for doing 94 in a 70. He asked that I be careful and bid goodbye without a written warning. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in 48 years.
Studies have shown that driving a little faster than surrounding traffic is significantly safer partly because of the increased attention it requires.
Mountain highway speed limits are ridiculously low, set for the lowest common denominator driver. I've never had an accident or gone off the road summer or winter but someday I'll get ticketed for going 40 over.
When mountain highways were little traveled we raced to Estes or Lyons or Nederland in 15 minutes doing four wheel drifts at 90 in 35 mph curves. If I had video cam of it we'd be YouTube stars, and probably sitting in a jail cell. :p

I was stopped going up Hwy34 west of Loveland when I was 17 years old. I had slowed to turn off the highway at a friends place up the canyon when the Loveland cop caught up with me. I had my little brother with me and we were fully engaged in doubling or tripling the speed limit and the aforementioned 4-wheel drifts the whole way up the canyon. I never saw the cop until his lights came on and had no way of knowing what he saw me doing. I figured I'd be headed to jail. I was very relieved when he said, "son, I clocked you going 64 in a 55." Whew. He thought I was trying to evade him. I scoffed and said "I never *saw* you. And if I did, why would I turn off into this residential area? I could've kept going all the way to Estes and you would've never caught me?" He let me off with a verbal warning and a good scare. I'm sure the fact that I was in my primary-colored uniform from my job at Long John Silver's probably added to his amusement factor! Ah, the good ol days!

My belief is. If one is ahead of traffic, there's less to worry about, then being behind, or in the middle of it
About 18 yrs ago one of the local cops stopped by to say hi, and see what was happening .
As we're talking he says . I was working last night when this guy on a blue bmw motorcycle blew past me at 110, in a 40. Oh wow you catch him ;) No but you better slow it down, or someone else will get you .
Where?
I was ticked for 24 over at DIA by Denver city/county and just had a mandatory appearance.
If that was sarcasm, I missed it.
I was incorrect it's a misdemeanor. BUT 25+ is jail time

My average speeding ticket on a mc was usually 40 over. One was 60 over. The 110ish (in a 55) on 25 NB was fun. That was an 18 pt. Not arrested due to my use of directionals, and no one hitting their brakes as i split lanes. Then he says, i wrote on the back you were cooperative, recommending they reduce it to a 2 pt infraction. ?????
You wrote me an 18 pt speeding ticket. Then tell me i should have it dropped to 2 points. Why bother writing me a ticket? Hey it's all about the money;) have a good day. AND SLOW DOWN!
Now i don't go over 9 mph on the highway, and barely 5 over in town. Out here, 20+ will get you a ride in the back of a police car.

Interesting thing about MC (particularly sport bike) riders, is most aren't nearly as good as they think they are. Which doesn't bode well when those over confident riders decide to try to evade a speeding ticket.
I've received two speeding tickets. Nothing particularly exciting. One when I was a teenager coming back from the lake in nebraska. Came over a rise doing 20 over, at the same time a LEO came over the rise in the other direction. I was pulled over before he even turned around because I knew he got me. Ticket was for 10 over.
2nd was years ago driving down 67 just out of Deckers. The speed limit is rather slow in spots which takes some self-control not to exceed...it's just a fun road to drive. Riders know that is a very popular route for bikes. One of the many bikes going the opposite direction that day happened to be Douglas County LE. Whoops. I was 10 over, he lit me up before he even passed me and again I was pulled over before he got turned around. He had a nice 1911. (I know what your thinking, it remained holstered ;) )
MC cops have been very active on EB 6th, right at I25 many mornings lately. They are just nailing people nonstop there. I have no interest in ever getting a ticket again. That's an unnecessary expense I'd prefer to avoid.

Agree - sucks to pay, but hell, I was speeding... Got one a couple months ago on the way back from dinner w/friends in Elizabeth. The officer was curt, professional, and caught me speeding. I was carrying, he didn't ask, I didn't offer, kept my hands where he could see them, and thanked him for being quick w/the ticket. Didn't want to pay, but you do the crime...
NOTHING can travel faster on 2, or 4 wheels, than a police radio. .
On a side note i "heard" years ago (before that pesky cell phone) some riders on 2 wheels would have a cut off switch, for their brake lights
I didn't personally do it, but when I was young I know of two of my good friends that the radios couldnt catch. Both got away from police by just opening it up and running.
And yes, I have heard of tailight cutoff switches.
The entire cant outrun a radio is based upon
1. There has to be more police ahead
2. The ones chasing can maintain a visual on where their prey is until the prey can be caught by #1.
Once the prey is out of sight, the chase is pretty much over.
Let's not forget anything over 20+ and they arrest you, for a felony. OUCH!
Not always. I know plenty of people who have got hit 20+ over and just tickets.
Now eluding... that if they catch you they will arrest you for....

At one point in time, yes. However thanks to today's proliferation of cell phones. You can't sneeze in the middle of nowhere, w/out someone getting it on film.
Anytime i saw a LE in pursuit of me, i pulled over. They would ask, as they all do. Did you know you were speeding. Yes i did officer. ?????I know i was speeding, you know i was speeding, why dance around it. The majority of them would write reduced infraction tickets. Heck i actually did a few gun deals with them. But those were NoCo LE.
As a side note. I get clocked doing what ever, outside torrington wy. I was trying to go from sturgis back to my house in a 4 hr window.
Wyo Trooper ask. You know why i pulled you over? Well actually officer. I saw you turn around and pulled over, for you. Really, why have you drive more then you needed. His reply. OH I have no doubt i would have caught up to you.
Lets me go with a warning. BUT............ followed me from torrington to wycross, about 30 something miles, before turning around. 55 ! ! ! ! Put a kebosh on the 4 hrs goal.
Oddly enough when blowing past a trooper on one of the beemers, they never gave pursuit
Probably due to them being so quiet, unlike my H-D's . It never got their attention.

Harleys can go over 75mph?

Downhill, in neutral. But you have to have the stones to not use the brakes ;)
On a serious note. I ended up keeping an attorney on retainer, just because.

Got pulled over in Bozeman Saturday night after my nephew's graduation party doing 35 in a 25 and for having a piece broken out of one of the taillights (still functioned but the cop said the bright bulb in the housing was distracting). My sister was driving so she presented her Hawaii DL while I dug the registration and insurance out of the glove box. Officer let us off with a warning -- I'm sure with college graduation and CO plates he was thinking he had a truck full of pot smokers but he didn't even get a whiff of alcohol.
I've had three tickets in my lifetime. Two on HWY 50 where I was clocked from the air, something like 13 and 18 over respectively *grumble grumble* when I was 17 or 18. And then one just a few years ago for something like 3mph over in Canon City, CO. Screw that place, lol.
On a side note, my brother got written up for a 20mph over around Rock Springs, Wyoming, while driving an oversize load. Problem is, he wasn't speeding AT ALLm even 1mph. A fat, old LEO came out from behind a billboard, wrote him up and said "You can drive down to the courthouse and pay that right now and it won't ever reach your record." Yeaaaah. He fought it, and fought it, and eventually prevailed, in part because their court system couldn't figure out how to setup f'ing zoom meetings. Of course, technology is rather difficult for the good'ol'boy club. Aint B.S. fun. You might want a dash camera if you're out of state driving up there.
Side note: I just now remembered that one of those two tickets, the officer had told me at the window that I was clocked at something like 9 over and then wrote it substantially higher when handing me the ticket.
But, balanced against all the NICE officers I've met, I've been pulled over a ton of times and never got a ticket in all those instances.
It really doesn't matter, if they put up cameras and speed traps everywhere.
If they can do it to my little piece of the road, they can do it anywhere.
You MUST go the speed limit.

Think of the tickets you got when you weren’t doing something in a different way.
They were just catching up for a couple of the times you were doing something and didn’t get caught.

Floyd hill, finally picking up speed around 470.
Well enough at least, to go from the right to middle lane

Have you seen the price of doughnuts lately?
The speeding ticket may be cheaper.
They didn’t practice good Covid restrictions... that donut MUST be thrown in the trash immediately!
I caught myself down right speeding in a residential today. In no uncertain terms, I reminded myself to skedadle*, as I aggressively applied the breaks.
*I didn't want to swear in this post, so I typed "synonyms for "get fucked"" into the poultry search engine. Skedadle was one of the options.

Yeah... I got my first speeding ticket since 1990 about 3 weeks ago. It was a doozie! 77 in a 55. There's a long, open stretch of highway with a 75mph limit between the Oklahoma/Texas state line (the Red River) and Vernon, TX. There's a short stretch in a very small community where the limit drops to 55mph. I had my cruise set on 78, GPS said I was going 79. The nice deputy who stopped me said he clocked me at 77. I just forgot about the speed limit change and didn't adjust the cruise control because I was preoccupied talking with my girlfriend. And I got a $279 reminder not to be so preoccupied that I foreot to reduce my speed in that area.
I deserved it. No question. Actually, I almost never slow down thru that stretch if I'm being honest. So I figure with only 1 ticket and speeding thru there dozens of times I'm way ahead of the game. But I guarantee you I slow down now. That shit's expensive and paying fines takes all the fun out of speeding.
ETA: Girlfriend got her first speeding ticket in almost 30 years as well the day before I got mine. She was driving thru Throckmorton, TX on her way to see me. Sped up a little too soon leaving town. Her ticket only cost $189. One more thing we have in common now. :)

Every time I hear Throckmorton, I think of the tosh.o episode with the guy who maintains one of the school football fields out there. In-laws used to live in Haskell

Can't help thinking that there has to be a message when you both get tickets.
[Coffee]
Those where undeserved tickets in a speed reduction for the sole purpose of revenue generation.
Most speed reductions are not safety based but politically based. The police and politicians have no clue how traffic engineering works and set limits based on feelings or other silly motives. The national 55mph limits as an example. Most interstates are designed to safely handle 85 mph. 85th percentile free flowing traffic is what limits are supposed to set at. But many places are set at 50th percentile or lower solely on the goal of funding traffic enforcement programs and "stop and search" programs that disproportionately affect low income and minority drivers.
