View Full Version : Truck gun opinions
So, being the lazy person I am I occasionally leave the house without a firearm.
Thinking about buying a couple of handguns to literally leave in my vehicles so I?ll always have one handy.
Yes, I understand it is generally a bad idea and there is the potential for theft but let?s leave that argument for another thread.
Anyhow, my criteria is cheap yet reliable and preferably a minimum caliber of 9mm or 38 Spcl so no 25 ACP or anything. Odd calibers like 9x18 or 7.62x25 are fine.
Any ideas?
Taurus G2C. Cheap, and it works.

Ugh. I guess I should have mentioned I have made a solemn oath to never buy a Taurus product for the rest of my life.

While I agree with Ray about Taurus handguns in general, the gun in my truck is a Taurus M709 Slim. I bought it a few years ago after reading a Guns & Ammo article where it won a 1000 round torture test against all comers in the compact 9mm category. I drag it out and run a mag through it every few months and never a hiccup. Don't much like anything about it except two things: It was cheap ($229.00) and it goes bang every time.

Stoeger STR-9
Both the Taurus 709 Slim ( no longer manufactured) and the G2C are excellent guns at their price points. Even Hickock 45 now says we should stop calling the G2 and G3 good for the money and just say they are good handguns , period. I've owned multiples of both the 709 and G2C and never had a single malfunction with any of them.
....but I did read your comment on swearing off them for the rest of your life. :)
Ugh. So the Taurus G2 or whatever they call it are reliable handguns?
Just looking for something that won?t break the bank or hurt my feelings if it does go missing but obviously it needs to be trusted to perform if needed.

Hi point: cheap and I?ve tried to get one to stop shooting to no avail. Plus nobody has to see you carry it and the weight isn?t a problem being a truck gun.
:)

KelTec P11. Absolutely miserable to shoot, but cheap, reliable, accurate, and holds 10+1 rounds of 9mm.
80% g19 .... that way if it gets stolen there is less paperwork.

My truck gun is my carry gun. I live and work in a up and coming neighborhood and would never leave a firearm in the truck

I had actually considered this option.
Building one cheap doesn?t really seem to be an option right now.
Since someone brought up the Kel-Tec, what about those Sccy pistols? Anyone have any experience with them? Reliable?

9.18 MAK. Ammo is still available and cheap.
What ever you think you want, definitely try shooting one, first.
Also someone mentioned the Hi-Point. Like or hate them. I had never seen one in action, till i had 2 "students" show up for a pistol call.
The only time their 9mm's stopped firing was to reload the 7-8? rd mags. Each of those performed, w/out issue during a 500 rd range day.
I told them, at the 250-300 mark, there was no need to keep shooting, if they wanted to stop. Not a issue, lets keep shooting. For the price point they would fit what you're looking for category

I see a LOT of SCCY malfunctions at the range...
I must second the Hi-Point.
You will definetely not shed a tear if it gets stolen.
A while ago somebody was selling a 9, a 40 and a 45 for $300 total!
I could kick my self for not jumping on it...

I haven’t heard a bad thing about the Taurus G2/G3 series, outside of the general hate for Taurus. They seem to have unasked themselves with the G series and the TX22. I haven’t shot one personally but I’ve handle them and they are really decent pistols. If I weren’t a Mag compatibility national socialist id pick one up. I see them regularly for $250-280, but I have so many Glock mags I’d be losing money if I got into another platform.
As far as the P80 goes, primary arms has the full size frame on a 24 hour sale right now for $120

I know you hate to hear it, but, the new Taurus guns are way better than the SCCYs. The Taurus PT92/99 Beretta semi-clone guns are also a good option. I picked up a used one several years ago that has never missed a beat. I also got very lucky with a couple of older Taurus model 85 revolvers. Have a 3" and a snub. The trigger on my snub is every it as good as my S&W model 60. Every manufacturer has their lemons, but I always hesitate when considering a Taurus. Having said that every one I have purchased in the last decade have been 100%. PT709s, G2Cs ($200 at the time), PT92 and Model 85s. I even had a pocket PT738 .380 (similar to the Ruger LCP) that was flawless.
Gum Creek Holsters FTW.....

I've yet to see one actually go through more than 1 mag without issues. The up side is their CS is outstanding.
Go to J&G sales and take a look at the alloy 1951 Beretta. 9MM single stack. Reliable, affordable service weapon.
For some reason my house hold ended up with three of them.
Can we give you our opinions about your truck too?
This won't meet Ray's criteria but since I always carry a handgun when I drive away from home, my truck gun is an M1 Garand with a ten-pocket Garand belt. In a hidden locked compartment and a padded case it takes almost a minute to retrieve and load it but it's there if needed. I also keep a can of Fox pepper spray in a clip mounted below the brake controller under the dash.

Ha. Now I have this grandfatherly image of you stuck in my head.
A long gun is definitely ideal but definitely wouldn?t fit in my center console or along side my seat. Plus, stuffing it in my waistband to run into Home Depot might prove problematic.

No way. Being a Dodge owner it would probably just make me cry.

Hmm... it must be the 1956 S&W pre-Centennial Safety Hammerless in the console tray. Or, that I was born before that M1 was made. [blaster]
:p
Gen 1 Toyota Tundra? Nice truck. Very comfortable ride.
Another vote for the Made in America Hi-Point. If only they could use Glock magazines, they might just be the perfect stash handgun.
I've only left one gun in my truck in the last 20 years. I had an older 18.5" single shot Stevens 12 gauge. It was stolen along with my truck. I miss the shotgun more than the truck because I can buy another truck for $4k, but doubt that I will find another single shot break action for $65.
Mine is a Star Model BM. Bought it for $149 when J&G Sales had stacks of 'em. Extra mag, nice grips, shipping and transfer shit - I'm all in around $200-ish. Little bit of tuning, it runs great! Cheap enough.

I would get a SAR9. They can be found for taurus prices. Its basically a Glock with a VP9 grip. I had one, it was fantastic. Like most Turkish pistols, the machining is awesome but its sprung for Nato ammo. Feed it hotter ammo or put a glock guide rod in it, and it will run 100%.

If you see something @ j&g lmk. I'm about 30-40 min from them. I believe their online business is what keeps the doors open.
What a bunch of lifeless putz's The have no sales skills and if you asked a question on a gun.
You get that "look" they'd rather be somewhere else, than actually helping a potential customer
