View Full Version : Hackers shut down gas line from Texas to North Carolina
Apparently there are very long lines to get gas out in North Carolina because hackers shut down the pipe line that goes from Texas to Pensylvania last night. They are thinking that it could be back on line by later this week. Here is an article I found: https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/north-carolina-facing-fuel-shortage-cyberattack-colonial-pipeline
Just a quick PSA to maybe fill up in case demand trickles this way as the country tries to relieve the demand pressure out there.

Ransomware attack was late last week, pipeline shut down since Friday. Some outlets have been out of fuel for couple days and shortage becoming more wide spread in southeast.
Move along folks. Just another act of domestic terrorism that won?t be treated as such. Nothing to see here.

I read about the attack/shutdown on Saturday AM and told the people I know out there to get filled up then. I can't believe it hardly made national news until Monday AM. Still not much more than a blip until late yesterday and by that time it was too late for anyone to prepare.
I told everyone at work today to be aware of (more) shipping delays for things coming from the east coast.

I don?t think this should trickle our way unless they start hitting other pipelines. Or maybe I?m not seeing how it could. If they cannot get gas on the east coast, then the gas is going to sit at the refinery. Unless the refineries scale down production.

They would never do that. If they can make it through a colder than expected cold snap. They can make it through a bunch of hackers. [ROFL3]

The weird thing about this one is the hackers ALMOST apologized. They released a statement that said causing social problems wasn't their intent, they only meant to make $$$.
So doesn't sound like they're going to do it again. Unless of course they did make money (Biden admin did suggest companies pay these hackers ransoms) then maybe they're willing to accept the collateral damage.
First guns, then ammo, now gas! At least it's not toilet paper, that would be shitty...

Well this thread went down the toilet quick! [ROFL3]
But seriously, maybe a bit tin foilery but whos to say its not part of their "green plan"- see if we had no more fossil fuel this would never would have happened. Yea like the windmills will make up the difference when power is in high demand.

So easy to make this a false flag. The intelligence agencies are so corrupt and have a history with this sort of thing (e.g. fast and furious), that you just can't take anything they say at face value anymore. In these times, there are several plausible alternative explanations: for example, to get us (more) used to scarcity/socialism, to create a "problem" that is solved by pushing even harder for green energy, to distract from other problems, etc etc
Im an engineer but no expert in gas and oil distribution. Even though they may have been hacked, those are computers controlling mechanical systems. I cannot believe those mechanical systems cannot be manually controlled while any computer-based damage is repaired.
For reasons I don't understand, this could be as the news media is reporting, Could be. But they have taught us all to be highly skeptical.

Reports coming out that over 1,800 stations in the SE are sold out as of this morning.
Some metro areas in the SE have 65-80% of the area stations sold out.
Hope they get that pipeline flowing again soon!
So they are saying that pipelines are needed and Texas has a surplus of gas....
And yes, royal PITB for folks that are involved. It looks like Streach'in Grechin is trying to close access to the pipe line..
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer threatened Tuesday to go after Enbridge’s profits from a Great Lakes oil pipeline if the company defies her order to shut it down.

This is what I don't get, you would have to be a fairly intelligent person to be able to hack and shut down a computer system that controls 1,000+ mile pipeline...but you didn't know that it was going to cause societal problems?
That just doesn't square with me.

So easy to make this a false flag.
This is my take. It's just awful convenient that right after a president that has vowed to destroy the oil and gas industry takes power that now all of the sudden "hackers" are taking down pipelines?
Pipe line was restarted, but I think that's just a Truth Flag done by the Biden administration trying to show the country they are capable.

Of what? Honestly. what do you believe this administration is capable of.
From the guy who spent 40 years as a senator, with minimal achievement, now speaking as the president
https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2021/mar/26/biden-says-he-will-plow-past-senate-chaos/
I want to get things done. I want to get them done consistent with what we promised the American people,” said Biden, who spent decades in the Senate. “I am going to say something outrageous: I have never been particularly poor at calculating how to get things done in the United States Senate.”
The president was repeatedly pressed about the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, where increasing numbers of young migrants have overwhelmed the government's holding facilities. Biden promised better media access to the camps -- once his administration has a better handle on things -- as well as improvements to the nation's immigration system and U.S. help to improve conditions in the migrants' home countries
I don't really think that, and am surprised that you think that I do. If it wasn't clear, I was demonstrating how silly it sounds to call every unfortunate happening a false flag event.

AH SARCASM. it escaped me, oh wise jedi.
And yes false flags are almost as bed as falling back on RACIST & White Supremist
The thing is, the guys that think them running out of cereal is a false flag by Biden and big Kellogg, one day, they're going to be right about something. And it will likely be just as crazy as every thing else they tried to blame in the past.
Yup. That is the thing about modern "prophets" of every kind too (including economic). Their first 2,000 predictions are WRONG but when they eventually guess correctly, their wisdom is elevated by media. Have to love how we ignore the sum of the parts as a society.

"False Flag Operation" is dumbest thing I have heard in a while. Everything is a false flag these days. When you sit on the toilet and nothing happens, it's a "false flag operation". Nobody that know anything about cyber security agrees with you. Learn something about cyber security before chiming in how this happened and why.
It's the digital age. Your shit is gonna get hacked. Better have a plan before it happens. This is not really different than any of the others. Probably didn't want to spend that IT money. Didn't want upgrade their old gear. Didn't want pay for good talent. Didn't want to change their passwords. Didn't wanna patch those devices. Didn't wanna enable 2FA. Didn't want make backup and verify. Didn't want have a DR plan. Didn't want actually test that DR plan. Didn't wanna....
Please read the comments on that linked article and tell this country is is not doomed to eat itself.

Oh FFS.
Glad I have a 50gal diesel tank I tend to keep topped off. But it's going to hurt bad this summer filling it.

Probably fired the guy that's been begging for money to fix their security too. That's usually how it goes.
"There are two kinds of organizations, those that have been hacked, and those that don't know it yet." I forget if it was the ex Target CISO (not there when they got breached but hired back after) or the ex ADDNI I heard speak at an event.
Sign at City Market taped on each pump said "Colorado is not experiencing a shortage, please save some for the next person :) "
Kind of an oxymoron isn't it? Sure we have a shortage, caused by people buying gas early anticipating a shortage, a self fulfilling fear. It will be quite short lived in theory, only because most soccer moms and profiteering hipsters can't stockpile 6,000 gallons of gas in their garage (although a rare handful may try.... 10' pool anybody? :D), it is still a shortage.
I topped off both tanks while I was at the pump, FTR. I'm sure they would love it if I didn't use all of my fuel discount :p
It's very scary, in a world when the government has already made us hoard toilet paper.
Just saying.
Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt.
2020 and 2021 have been one great big oxymoron... COVID, toilet paper and sanitizer hoarding, Fauchi, mask mandates, gender confusion, Biden, shootings, Harris, Gun shortage, ammo shortage, ATF going insane, Capitol lock down, Biden, double mask, defund the Police, Harris, Minnesota, CHAZ, Seattle, Portland, BLM, ANTIFA, Biden, need I say more.... 😀

Yeah, its poorly worded, "Colorado is not yet experiencing a shortage, please save some for the next person so we don't artificially create one." would be more accurate, but that's way too much nuance for the public.

Sold my boat and a U-Ship driver picked it up yesterday to take to Orlando.
He had the back of his pick-up loaded with 5 gallon containers of gas in case he ran into states with no supplies.
Today's news said that Colonial had paid "Dark Side" over $5 million in ransom and the Pipeline should be up and running within a week.
Well now, that should encourage the other hackers.
Stand by for more whacky results.

You know, we have an entire US Gov't agency to deal with exactly this sort of threat.
CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) https://www.cisa.gov/
They have a $3 BN budget and 3,374 employees (as of 2017)
I didn't want to read that CISA wasn't working on this infrastructure attack UNTIL the FBI called them!
https://www.cybersecuritydive.com/news/colonial-pipeline-ransomware-cisa-senate-hearing/600029/
CISA hasn't even written a press release to post on their own web site addressing this attack!

This has hoarding thing might have finally reached my neck of the woods. I went to get gas for the mowers today and couldn?t get to a pump at the first two stations I went to because there were so many people there gassing up.

Wife went to get gas yesterday afternoon. 10 min wait due to the line, said it was the same across the street.
Wonder what the next "panic buy" will be. Food prices are up 10-15%. Forget about lumber and steel. I guess Biden is taxing the middle class.
Ray,
The Shell station at 120th and Claude had 3/10 pumps covered with yellow bags yesterday at 2:15pm. They had plenty of $1.39 honey buns though. My first grader and I had a yummy snack when I picked her up from Hulstrum.
I drove right by the Cottonhood KS today in the diesel 1/4 tank down (~13 gals) and didn't see but 3 cars in there.
Sign showed Diesel @ $3.09. Saw red on the gas prices but didn't catch if they were showing regular. My spidy sense didn't detect any issues. Lots of traffic and there certainly wasn't any line.
I normally fill it (50 gal tank) when convenient or around 1/2 tank unless we're on the road. Depends on when the fuel points are lost.
Since I wanted to hedge against stupid government inflected inflation I got a costco card last year.
Costco had all pump open, but wait time was like there are only 2-3 operating pumps at a regular gas station.

The ones I go to are like that most of the time, even before panic buying of gas. The one nearest to me opens the gas pumps at 7, so if you are in there before 8, it is no problem.

Sam's Club in Northern COS yesterday afternoon had typical weekend lines for gas, nothing really unusual. Kum & Go at Woodmen & Powers yesterday evening was empty.
I am confident enough to say there aren’t any shortages around the Denver area, just individual stations with pump issues or lines because they’re in busy/popular spots.
I saw someone compare Biden to Jimmy Carter, with the accompanying gas shortages of the 70s.

We're talking about fuel shortages, and riots.
The result of the attack on our infrastructure.
It looks very much like the 70s, when Jimmy Carter was President.
High Gas prices, due to a vulnerable economy.
