View Full Version : My wife was startled by a masked bandit
That?s right, folks. She was in the garage a couple of nights ago and in walked a raccoon.
I was upstairs and heard the scream. Figured she was either being attacked by someone or maybe she had seen a mouse. Went to investigate and it must have run away scared by my wife?s blood curdling scream.
Skip to this morning. I was leaving for work and there were raccoon tracks in the snow in my driveway.
Guess I need to see if I have raccoons hiding somewhere on my property and figure out the best way to evict them.
Ha. Guess since this is posted in the ?ask for help? section I should have mentioned I?m open to serious as well as less serious ways for riding my property of vermin within city limits. Thanks.

I?m not sure we have drains like that in my neighborhood. With my luck they?re probably under my porch or something.

Yup, here too. And last Friday Animal Control was parked in front of a neighbors house, went down as I saw two officers in the driveway with something in a lasso. A nice big fat Rocky hissing and being a badass. Talked to one of the officers, she said he was looking like he was ready to attack just as her partner got the noose around it's neck. Stuffed it in a cage and off they went. A few weeks ago the pooch was growling looking out the patio door one night. Grabbed the flashlight and two big fat raccoons were glaring back from behind the Russian Olive tree. No way the dog was going out.

Best way to take care of them is with a suppressed 22lr pistol loaded with subsonic ammo.

We had a raccoon invasion a couple years ago.
It took a few months with peanut butter in live trap along with some CCI Quiet to get rid of 9 raccoons.
Have only seen one occasionally on trail cam since then

I had always heard that you kill one and leave it and that will cause the others to leave... it worked for us back in NY when we were younger and cleaned out the raccoons every summer when we?d open up our church camp.

Was gonna link the Forest Gump movie line but I think that would push the boundaries......
I have "relocated" quite a few with a Havahart trap and a chicken leg wired tight, just a bit from the top, so they don't walk off with the leg without tripping the trap.

KFC or Popeyes for the chicken leg?

So the battle begins.
We have at least three raccoons frequenting my backyard at night and between them digging in my lawn and doing their business in my landscaping it?s time for them to go.
Apparently my trapping skills are subpar. This morning I found the trap tripped but empty and the bait container out in the yard.
Looks like I?ll reevaluate the bait and probably attach it to the inside of the cage as someone mentioned. I?ll also fine tune the trip mechanism on the trap and make sure it is operating smoothly.

I'm getting to the point of dealing with my raccoon problem too.
There are a couple of rather fat ones that like to play grab ass on the roof most nights. They also seem to think that leaving poop all over my roof is a good time...

Small metal parts dish, drilled two holes & affixed with a zip tie & have never had an issue with bait walking off since. Edging pin to anchor the trap from rolling works well.
I also put a small piece of bait near or just inside the entrance - seems to ease their concerns when the sample is easy pickings. Good luck.

Had a coon family living on my tree for a while.
We left them alone, they left us alone.
Then one night, momma raccoon and het grown babies came down the tree in a bee line, right in front of us, and left our yard.
Not a note, not a call...
We miss them, they were characters.
Came up with a simple secondary trigger for the trap. The bait will be suspended from the top of the cage and when the bait is moved it will trip the trap so if they manage to avoid the little floor plate trigger when going for the bait then grabbing the bait should trap them.

We got one in the trap that managed to roll the trap twice trying to get out.
We had another that would roll the trap across the yard trying to get the bait out.
I set the trap on concrete blocks and used a ratchet strap to secure it to one of the blocks, that stopped the trap rolling.
The blocks got the trap off the ground so they would not try digging out.
The ratchet strap made it easy to release the trap to empty and clean it.
Thanks for the tips. I was thinking of putting some pavers on top of it or maybe anchoring it down with tent stakes or something.
Still haven?t managed to trap one of the raccoons yet. I did manage to trap (and release) a cat the other night. Almost felt bad for him because apparently the trap was set up where the sprinklers were hitting it and the cat was soaking wet and meowing constantly.
Probably wait until the weekend to try again so I don?t have to deal with trapped critters in the early morning when I?m trying to get to work.
You need to set the trap up in a corridor of sorts that funnels them into the trap. For example, if you have a bush next to a fence, when they access the yard, they'll skirt the fence and go behind the bush to try and maintain cover. A trap just sitting out with bait, might, work, but you'll have a better chance if you can anticipate where they are coming/ going and set up the trap there.
When I trapped raccoons out was exactly the Bush next to fence scenario, and I added some sticks and yard debris to more directly funnel them through. I used a snare with no bait and still got them.

Laid off the trapping during the week but set it last night and caught one.

There is a surprising amount of damage to the cage, especially the handle on top and definitely more blood than I would expect to see on what appears to be a humane trap.
I?m actually without a truck this morning and probably shouldn?t have set the trap last night because now I don?t have a good way to haul it off right now.
Debating on finding a way to put him down. Its either that or see how he fairs in the cage all day and haul him off this evening when I get my truck back.
Haul him where? Just put him down. Do you have a plastic tub big enough to put that cage in? Water or exhaust.
I probably have a plastic drum big enough for the trap. Drowning it could be an option but I?d still have to dispose of the body.
My original plan was to take it for a ride to some place where discharging a firearm isn?t frowned upon and put it down.
My son has my truck because I have some work to do on his vehicle today.
CCI quiet with barrel pressed to head isn't bad, especially if the barrel is at least 20".
It's Friday, trash comes on Monday. Throw the body in a trash bag, and put the bag in your can. Simple as that.

Trash day is Tuesday but I get your point.
I?m going to let him hang out in the cage all day and contemplate the circumstances that got him there and deal with him this evening.

Come to think of it, your trash can will fit that cage, so no need to go looking for one big enough.
Update.
My son brought my truck home around 5:30 so decided it was time to deal with the critter. Went to the trap to check on it and he was dead.
Triple bagged him and into the trash can he went.
I?ll have to pressure wash the trap to get the blood and fur off of it and make repairs to some of the damage and then it will be time to try and catch the other two raccoons.
Once I have rid my property of the raccoons I might try to trap some of the bunnies as well.
Dead from being in the trap for only 24ish hours? You should have performed a necropsy to find out why.

Methinks there's evil afoot at Ray's !!!
Less than 24 hours. Funny thing is I had heard that if you didn?t release a raccoon from the humane trap within 24 hours of its capture that it could die. I guess they were right.
