View Full Version : Finally bought a PS5

I was able to buy a ps5 from Sony Direct yesterday. Unfortunately there aren?t any games available yet that are grabbing my interest. I followed Matt Swider on Twitter for in stock alerts back in March. The PlayStation Direct purchase queue opened at 7 minutes and I got through. It was a lot of work to give an evil corporation my money...
the new XBox is appealing too, with the $15 a month game pass. I primarily just want to play the second Horizon game (PS5 exclusive) when it releases, I?m sure there will be others along the way.
My wife tried to buy me one for my birthday in March, not realizing it was basically impossible if you aren?t in the right online store at the exact moment they go on sale. It was a nice thought though.
I am curious if there is any value to my original PS4. It?s the original, not slim or pro. If it?s minimal I should probably just gift it to my nephew, if it?s got some value I?m considering selling it to offset the cost of the PS5.
I've purchased 4 PS5s so far. Walmart now thinks I'm a robot.
I kept my ps4 because you can remote play the ps5 on it, so I have it in my office to play during down time.

Congrats I fail at twitter as I never see the notifications till like 2 hours late.

I only have Black Ops for it, and I would say no. Games do load STUPID FAST compared to the ps4, but there isn't much out there actually taking advantage of the hardware yet.
Do not get Godfall.

I had my share of missed notifications over the course too, along with restocks while I was driving or watching my kids take their swim lessons. Basically it was a pain in the butt to be in a position to even try. Sony Direct and the NewEgg shuffle are the only way I stood a chance, because there's time for me to get into a lottery type system.
I'm glad I can stop trying to buy one, but since there aren't really any exciting new games I don't think you're actually missing anything yet.
As for the old PS4, I contacted the local used game store and they don't take the old 500 GB system anymore at all. He directed me to try Gamestop. So, it's real value is as a gift to my 9 yo nephew.
Side note, this chip shortage combined with sudden high demand (apparently everyone in the US used their $1400 checks as a downpayment on a truck) has wrecked the new vehicle market, paralleling what people are seeing with GPU's and Gaming Consoles. Can you imagine jumping through these hoops trying to buy a new truck? Sounds stupid.
A buddy has been looking for a truck, so I skimmed around for a little but. 14 F150, 85k miles, 4x4 crew cab. $30k. To hell with that
I found an 08 F550 crew cab with 43k miles for 19k. It was tempting, but I didn't buy it. Elected to fix up my OBS instead.
A lot of the GPU shortage has less to do with stimulus and more to do with crypto being in the stratosphere. They mine that on GPU's, so every time it is high they are impossible to buy. Every time it crashes all the sudden floods of GPU's are all over ebay and resale markets. While the stimmy's has a minor effect, most of those people can't even grab a GPU because the cryptominers are the real botting force buying them up.
Someday I'll snag a 3070 or 3080 or something, but I don't mind waiting a year or even more for crypto to eventually trip for a moment.

Yeah I am not sure why I am trying so hard to find one for that very reason. I guess maybe habit. I think I am going to wait for Resident Evil 8 on the PS5 though just because I know I am going to get one sometime and I am not in a huge hurry to play it.

I'm not paying $1000+ for a PS5. I'll wait. But yes, RE8 should be awesome!

Just watch for restocks. I haven't paid over sticker for any of the consoles I purchased.

If you use discord, check out the falcodrin server for in stock alerts. I was able to get my PS5, RTX 3090 and Ryzen 5950x that way without paying over msrp. Even snagged a PS5 bundle for a buddy.
