Soooo who will be the first district to try this?
https://www.kktv.com/2021/05/25/court-colorado-school-districts-can-raise-property-taxes/
And one more step into Californication
And the fact that government has the ability to tax you based on the value of property is just wrong and should have never been deemed acceptable by past generations.
Schools should be fee based charged to the parents of those that attend.

First it was the MJ revenue that was supposed to help fund schools, yet they (at least in our former district) were still asking for more money on the ballot, now it's this. I know AZ isn't perfect, but damn I feel for you guys in CO.

Rewind as few decades and lottery revenue was going to save the schools?how dod that work out?
Why would the property value go up in a district with poor schools?
Why would the property value go up in a district with poor schools?
It won?t. Just the taxes on the shitty property.

Of course it's not. But when my property taxes are under $675 annually Throw in multiple year vehicle renewal and a 1 time registration fee for trailers. I can live with not perfect.
Now if only there was more than 1 decent mexican place, to eat.
Education being politicized by both sides has made public education exponentially more expensive.
Teachers do not get paid enough. The good ones go to better schools just like most people advance their careers.
I am 35 and grew up in a small rural town that was so severely under funded we combined grades in elementary to save money
a local family successfully showed with 3 children spread over 10 years that we did not meet minimum standards set by the state and feds in a lawsuit that changed how funding in Colorado is allocated to small schools.
my k-12 mainly 9-12 education was garbage.
The resolution is far from perfect but it’s a step
I don’t have children. I pay for everyone else’s children to attend school
Co property tax rate is under .6% a year on average. I paid .57% last year an additional hundredth of a percent is what 200 extra dollars. If that money helps a young person afford an opportunity to become more productive member of the economy I am all for it. I was going to spend it on over priced ammo from a out of state corporation that doesn’t pay taxes due to loopholes anyway.

Read the fine print. It was a scam to begin with. The mj tax was set up to only pay for building projects. So...if they don't need a new building, football field, etc...the funds end up in a state slush fund. If I remember correctly the first year or two there was only 1 school that even requested any money from the fund.

Oh I'm not (nor was I ever), under the illusion that any of the MJ money would ever go to schools, but they sure presented it to voters that way, likely wouldn't have changed the outcome of the MJ vote anyway, but just slimy politics as usual.
Just throw out the constitutions. They apparently don't mean anything anyway. Why keep up the charade?

As is the experience of many elementary school children.

There have been several attempts to raise taxes to give teachers better pay and improve conditions inside the classrooms. When people on the street are asked about those proposals everybody seems to be in support of it. When you do read the fine print, you find that there are stipulations included to allow the funds to directed into other places and they are ultimately rejected by the public. It is indeed slimy politics.

Missing Casa Bonita?
Never been there in the 30+ years in CO.
We have been to some shady places in North Denver, many a time. Way back when, there was a killer place across from lakeside amusement park. Damn breakfast burrito (eat in) filled up the plate, you had enough for lunch and a snack.

This is why the DEms have been talking non-stop about ?Democracy?. Do you know how many times ?democracy? appears in the US Constitution? ZERO. I?m not saying the voting for leaders isn?t a big issue but the foundation for a legitimate govt is respect of rights, not voting. If it came down to rights or votes, I?d take rights all the time other wise you have mob rule, but in reality there needs to be both. The dems with the NARROWest of margins- a tie breaker in the Senate, have decided that this is democracy and they can change everything- including changing the rules to cement their ?democracy? stranglehold.
So the national end point is where you end up here in CO. Judges legislating the death of the state by Kaliforniacide. The old dem head justice called it- plain language against, the other said never mind. The CO RKBA is trumped by ?safety? and regulation.
Everytime someone says ?Democracy? just mumble, ?mob-rule?.
The Democrats complain that the Republicans need to change their views to match the population. In reality the Democrats change the population to match their views.
Is this a thing that takes place in California?

Well said. The children in a great nation deserve a great education.

Under funded my ass.
The budget for 21/22 for JeffCo School District is $1,364,015,339. (Down $17k from last year).
In 2021 they had 80,088 students. Assuming all of them come back for the next school year that's $17,031 per student.
That'd cover a pretty good private school tuition with WAY WAY better educational results.
It's not a funding issue.

I'll confess to not understanding how the state Supreme Court can say that taxation can occur without voter approval when the TABOR amendment in our state constitution says it must have voter approval. Should not the Constitution trump everything?
Hear me when I say that I, too, believe in the necessity for a good strong primary education (K-12) for children. BUT... I don't think increased taxation will directly (or indirectly) make this a reality. I got a fairly decent education from a small-ish rural school. Taxation to fund the schools was considerably less then than it is now, so what's changed? Back then more of the money made it down to the classroom level. Today, only a fraction of the tax funds make it down to that level because there is so much bloat and waste at the "critical" district level. How many administrators, assistant administrators, deputy assistant administrators and staff do we need to run a school district? I contend that it's FAR less than most districts have in place. Most tax increases for education are seen by bureaucrats as justification to increase the bloat and waste of the administrative levels and result to scant pennies making it to the classroom level where it's needed. As such, I'm always against any tax increases for education.
Now, this is where I need you to remember my first statement of this paragraph. If I thought my money would be spend wisely and that the additional taxation would truly benefit the students, I'd certainly reconsider my position. As taxpaying citizens we need to hold the bureaucrats accountable for how they're spending OUR money. We need to call for greater transparency is how every dollar is being spent and we need to insist on having a greater say in the decisions. Unless this happens, we'll continue to see our education system continue to decline with continued calls for more and more money. Again, throwing money at the problem will not fix the problem.
Again, throwing money at the problem will not fix the problem.
It won't fix the education problem, but I don't think that's really what they're concerned about.
