View Full Version : Daredevil Alex Harvill dies while practicing for record-setting motorcycle jump
Daredevil Alex Harvill dies while practicing for record-setting motorcycle jump (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/daredevil-alex-harvill-dies-while-practicing-for-record-setting-motorcycle-jump/ar-AALbwqY)
"Come watch me hit this ramp June 17th," he said in a June 6 post.
Video appeared to show Harvill landing short of a ramp, hitting the edge of a dirt berm and being thrown from his bike.

Well, he won’t do that again.
I had never heard of him before. Might have popped up on my radar since it was out here in WA.
Looks like he fell short of the landing area, for those that are curious.
Were his last words, "Hey, hold my beer!"

I was thinking the same thing when I read the OP yesterday. Had he made it, he or someone else would have then pushed to break the record again (wash, rinse, repeat) until someone died. Looks like they met the threshold for that. The next guy might think a little longer before attempting.
I'm pretty sure that "thinking" isn't real high on the priority list for daredevils.
So far this thread just oozes class.

Yep. I saw the video. Hit the dirt landing mound very hard.
I wonder if he broke the record. [harley]
Notice that nobody says "at least he died doing what he loved".
Nobody ever says "at least he died doing what he loved" if someone goes out from auto-erotic asphyxiation either.
But if you have a heart attack while fishing and die from a lack of EMS, everyone acts like having a fishing pole nearby made your heart attack nicer.

Harvill?s family issued this statement (via KREM): ?While this was obviously a very tragic event that unfolded, Alex was doing what he loved to do."

Well I missed the mark on that one.
Irving, we’ve never really been a sympathetic bunch around here when it was something avoidable… now when someone dies at no fault of their own, we can certainly be.
I’ve witnessed some very generous acts of condolences and honor among the members here, but if they’re like me this man was not someone we’d ever heard of. It’s sad for him and his family, without a shadow of a doubt, but it just doesn’t hit home like others in recent memory.
That said, we are a pretty jaded bunch when it comes down to it.
I never even threw in any mention of a Darwin Award Candidate, or the familiar remark 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes'.
I recognized the irony of the situation. I never said I was "glad he's dead".

These old school sort of daredevils that just jump staright aren't that entertaining anymore. Cool bro you can ride fast and straight. Apparently in this case not fast enough. Or maybe his ramp building crew screwed the pooch. Either way, awful price to pay for something that's not that impressive even if successful.
The things people do on dirt bikes everyday are FAR more impressive than what this guy was attempting. The things the riders do in Nitro Circus for example are incredible and beyond what anyone could have dreamed of not long ago. Those guys have truly advanced the sport.

My post was simply observatory and factual in nature.
He won’t do that again.
