I'm at work tonight and we had a phone call at the station for a false alarm fire call. After laying back down for a few minutes, some a$$hole set off an aerial firework next to the fire station. I hit the floor yelling at my captain "gunshots." I called PD to inform them, when the second went off I was able to tell them it was fireworks and not gunshots. The first one sure made me think it was a shotgun going off next to the wall where my bed is. Needless to say, I'm up for the test of the day. F**KING A$$HOLES!

I can certainly understand the frustration. I like fireworks, and I like setting them off...but it's been so many years since it's been safe to do so it's not fun anymore.

Leave it to the pros to put on a good show for ya, our town canceled due to dry conditions. Perhaps the next town south will still have one this year.

I've always loved fireworks, but this is the 1st time I've had a dog that was absolutely terrified of them. He's such a sweet boy, it's heartbreaking to see him so scared. Thinking of taking him out to the range clubhouse on the 4th to hang out and watch TV all night.

There is a time and place for them. My boys love to go watch them. 0350 in the morning next door to the fire station is neither the time nor the place.

I love fireworks but don't launch any myself. The risk of fines is enough to deter me. I really don't mind when people launch them around the area as long as they're doing it safely and not when fire danger is high. 1.5" of rain last night sure helps. Sucks they woke you up. Especially with your job. Launching them late is just plain rude.

But I have to be honest with you, fireworks don't sound like shotguns. That's awfully dramatic.

I was woken up at 10:45pm the other night by some aerial fireworks right over the house. 10:45 is too late for that. But I most certainly didn't hit the deck. A simple mumble "ugh, it's too late assholes" seemed like a reasonable reaction.

It does suck when doggies get scared too, but that can be avoided. People train their dogs to sit, stay, heal, come, play dead, fetch...it's not any harder to also train them not to be scared of loud noises. That really should be part of every dog's training, gun dog or not.

If the dog isn't already scared, it's easier but can't be done too fast or else you risk making them scared.

On the dog front, I used to pop those air pockets they use for shipping...and also showed lots of love and normal interaction during loud thunder and lightning strikes. It really seems to have helped Lilly the BMC.

I have no idea how she would do with guns, I would hope not terribly.

I don?t mind people celebrating their independence by popping off illegal fireworks for the fourth. It does get mildly annoying when you hear them doing it every night starting about two weeks before the holiday and you still hear them going off weeks after it?s over. Literally just heard some as I?m typing this- middle of the day and in the rain.

Sounds like it's safe to light from 9:00PM-9:30PM only on the 4th.

Regardless of what we keyboard commandos say, I think you can tell if you were being over dramatic based on how your captain reacted to you hitting the deck and yelling “gunshots”… if he just rolled his eyes at you, then you know the answer. [Beer]

In either case, I get being woken up by them. That pisses me off royally… but not so much around New Years and July 4th. If it’s totally random and after 11pm, that really gets my blood pressure up too, but I’ve never mistaken them for gunshots. [panic]

Was looking down that way a while back.
Interesting local descriptions for land.
When investigating water source, I saw city water on acreage properties, and thought, Wow, that is pretty sweet.
What they mean is you truck it from the city and put it in a cistern, not waterlines from the city.
Gotta watch those descriptions.

When I still lived just outside of Trinidad, I felt should be no fireworks should be used where we lived due to strong possible wildfire threat. So, bought a black powder cannon (with a 1-inch bore) and still had PLENTY loud sounds when I felt like making some and was legal. Just had to be very vigilant for where sparks could fly AND where the molten fuse will land. Great fun and I am pretty certain there are still some black powder cannon matches held down in Raton at the Whittington Center.
And yes, water supply and availability can be a problem down outside of Trinidad. Their city water supply comes from North Lake and should certainly be free of any industrial waste.

To be fair, while I absolutely agree that 3am is not the time to set them off, I think if they HAVE to set them off at 3am, doing so near a fire station is probably best, because they're more likely to be drunk and launch them incorrectly and need said fire department to respond :P

I always used cannon grade BP which is MUCH more coarse than even FG. Blank loads take about half of the amount of powder of ball loads. Enjoy it while you still can as one of these days our famous Government will insist all BP must be purchased like dynamite and other such controlled materials.

Izzy got me the cannon because the one I cobbled together before IS SKETCHY. I picked up some components from skylighter and will make powder more coarse than what I have now. Just need to get to it.

Apples and oranges.

Teaching tricks and trying to break a terrified reaction to external noise are very different.

I have read and watched and talked to trainers about my beagle's response to fireworks. Nothing has worked so far. I live across the street from Cherry Creek and we often walk within earshot of the rifle range. It doesn't bother Popcorn at all.

Down in Castle Rock, the city's fireworks display is launched from the top of the Santa Fe quarry, which is the large hill right behind my house. Great views from my deck!

Last year, Castle Rock cancelled thier city fireworks show due to "dry conditions". For the record, everything was green as could be. So I sat on the deck and watched dozens of illegal displays throughout the city taking place, with zero incidents.

Then later in the year, the city decides it is "safe" to hold the makeup fireworks display.

Which promptly set the hill on fire.

For those of you with cannons, I can't think of a better way to celebrate Independence Day than making some booms with them. That's awesome. That's one of the reason's we enjoy the Symphony Above the Clouds in Woodland Park so much. Ft Carson sets up cannons on the track at the middle school and blasts them to the 1812 Overture just feet from everyone. I really hope they can do it this year, the last few years have been cancelled either due to weather of covid.

encorehunter, I'm sorry that my comment may have come off as kinda offensive. Not my intent. I would have said the same thing to any one of my friends, sometimes lighthearted comments don't translate well.

I get that. I don't claim to be any dog whisperer but my point is so many people think occasional exposure or comforting treats is training when it's not. I'm not talking about you or other people here, but people that I have talked to over the years with the same problem. They either give it a half hearted effort or don't try at all considering it just how the dog is. So many people this time of year say their dogs even hurt themselves because of fireworks, that's sad. They say they've done "everything" and nothing helps. In reality, most of them haven't done anything to train the dogs, they've just tried to comfort them with treats or distractions. I wish people would include loud noise training in their training routines when they work with their dogs and not wait until it becomes a major problem. Be proactive about it with every new dog. Seems like only gun dog owners work on that. How many dog owners who don't hunt them even bother with loud noise training? Any one here know anyone else who actually included daily and slowly increasing loud noise in their non-hunting dog training? I have never met anyone who did that. People should.

I had one rescue dog that was scared of loud noises that I was able to slowly work with her until it wasn't a problem anymore. A dog that was scared of loud noises ended up being a pretty good hunting dog. Gunshots, fireworks, all good. I currently have two dogs that I was able to work with as puppies to not get gunshy. One was super easy and the other was very skittish so I had to make sure I went REALLY slow with him. He didn't get to hunt until long after I would have liked to hunt him because I wasn't convinced he wouldn't get gunshy. But a lot of careful work and now he hunts like a pro and sleeps through even the loudest fireworks.

Everyone trains their dogs to sit, stay, come, etc. It's beyond me why people don't also include loud noise training with that basic obedience since loud noises are such a problem for so many dogs.

So these guys loaded a special "explosive containment vessel" with about 250 commercial grade illegal fireworks. Then they added 10lbs of their own explosives to initiate the explosion. They said the container is rated for 15lbs of explosives, well under max, right?.

LAPD Chief says they don't know why it failed. They followed all protocols!!!

Someone apparently forgot to figure in the weight of the illegal fireworks into their equation. I think they may have surpassed the 15lb max just a wee bit huh?

Neighbor to the east is doing a test run for Sunday evening. Pretty cool. A couple had some good altitude.

There are 3-4 farmers within a two mile radius of us who do their own displays on Independence Day. They usually roughly coordinate times to sequence and the hood(about 9sq miles[emoji41]) gets about 40-60 minute show.

This year will include an 8 tube mortar rack, several grand finale racks, , a dozen or 4 multi shot mortar “cakes”, a few dozen bottle rockets with heads the diameter of a Red Bull can. Toss in a few other dozen various obnoxious multi shot mortar gizmos and we have a party!

Jeeeeez. Someone's German shepherd almost got shot in that video too. Wonder if most of the injuries were hearing.

Amusing note: I used to know a guy on the GJPD bomb squad very well. Around ~15 years ago they had a small amount of explosives to dispose of but only had a single blasting cap. They are supposed to split it up into 2 pound increments. But hey, they were in a gravel pit, so it'll be fine right?

The gravel pit is in a self contained valley just outside of town, no risk to any properties. It'll be fine right?

People inundated dispatch and some were calling 9-1-1 from even six to seven MILES away on the other edge of town. I had family much closer that swore a train had went off the tracks and exploded. Lol. They lost the ability to do that after that incident [ROFL1]

:D

From what I recall, they were prohibited by the county from doing any controlled detonations at all and had to find a new location. I don't know what situations would have be an exception to the rule but people were PISSED.

Another TLDR: I also had a coworker that used to be EOD and got a yield/distance calculation wrong during a fairly large demonstration for some of their brass. Blew out the windows of several of their government vehicles. Oopsies. Got sent to a flight crew after that.

Apparently common sense conflicts with the 8 year old boy in us all when it comes to explosives.
