View Full Version : Slight of Hand Tax Increase on Vehicle Registrations

Here is one fee that is being added to the registration fees for passengers vehicles. $40 will be added to each registration for a state parks pass. This can be opted out of. But in reality how many look at the cost breakdown on the registration card vs those who just pay it? This pass should have been an opt-in, but the goal of raising revenue will not be met if a user is asked to pay extra. Those with multiple vehicles would be paying for multiple passes even though only one is likely to be used. I for one can't remember the last time I went to a state park. This may benefit a few, but will burden the many with higher taxes.

Senate Bill SB21-249 has been signed by Governor Polis. The goal of the Keep Colorado Wild pass is to benefit Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) in re-shaping the way our state parks are funded, increasing access and demonstrating CPW?s commitment to conserving the wildlife and places that make Colorado so special.
To address the challenges of rapid growth in demand for, and impacts from, outdoor recreation, CPW asks all Coloradans to financially support wildlife conservation and the trails and other outdoor recreation infrastructure they desire. The ?Keep Colorado Wild Pass? is a vehicle-displayed pass that will be added when Coloradans register their passenger vehicles, light trucks, motorcycles and recreational vehicles. The pass concept is intended to be a lower-cost pass to increase and expand accessibility to more Coloradans.

This new pass will provide access to Colorado?s 42 state parks and recreation areas and other potential public lands yet to be determined.

To encourage all Coloradans to take advantage of the Pass, the Pass price will be set at no more than half the price of an annual state parks pass (current annual fee is $80). Although we hope Colorado?s outdoor enthusiasts will embrace the Pass, there will be the ability to opt-out of buying the Pass during vehicle registration and annual renewal.

A reduced price pass for those unable to afford the full-price pass or that are currently eligible for assistance programs will also be available. An annual and daily state park pass fee structure will remain for tourists visiting the state and those that opt-out.

Existing user or activity fees in state parks such as fees for developed campsites, hunting/fishing license fees, and boat, OHV, and snowmobile registration fees would still apply.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions document for more details about Senate Bill SB21-249. A two-page fact sheet for the bill is also available.

I'm in. Better than $80/year. Let the illiterate pay more.

Now, don't get me started on roads and bridges "fees" or the insane yearly taxes.

My new truck last year was $1740 just for registration and title.

So if everyone, their dog, sister, and their uncle too essentially ends up with an annual pass....

Is there going to be any normal folks that still want to go to state parks within a year or two? National parks are bad enough right now, and a good proportion still have to pay for that. What happens when every Tom, Dick and Steve, emphasis on the Dick, is at the state park with you, each with all the arrogance of a bona-fide business investor?

There will likely be plenty of paddle boarders near your fishin hole

So when does this start? My state park pass expired this month and I renewed my registration this month. Sure be nice if the pass comes with my recent registration renewal...

I wouldn't be nearly as angry as I am about the grocery bag tax if it went to state parks.

The chicanery these so called public servants pull to hide taxes is much more irritating than the taxes themselves, although it is getting burdensome.

Hunters, anglers, and firearms enthusiasts have been paying for the maintenance of wild places for decades now. The new hot topic is how to tax all the free loading hikers, boaters, bird watchers, mountain bikers, etc.

But this has got to be the most underhanded, stupid way possible.

I mean I could make arguments for this, but I wouldn't agree with them.

They'll make a bunch of extra money the 1st year. Then a bunch of people will wise up and opt out.

I for one will opt out all but one vehicle. Then the state will only get $40 from me instead of the $80 they have been getting for a pass. Net loss for them.

Shady way to go about this

This is probably a fraction of what they make in day passes. As a previous both state and federal land employee USFS etc? that had the positions absorbed.
If anything the numbers where crunched, a few full time positions, the infrastructure to support the current system etc can be streamlined and allow for a stable projectable annual income.

The family is going to save 80 bucks a year.
Always glad I don?t get the amount of government that I pay for
and with current inflation rates 2023 40 bucks could very well be 25 2021 dollars

You get what you pay for. I don't mind that much. I've used state parks passes for a long time. The big deal is the last part of what you wrote. As soon as the bean counters realize the amount of the fee can't keep up with inflation things will get stoopid.

They found a way around TABOR, which both parties have been trying to kill since day one, by reclassifying it all as a "fee".

I heard about this 2 weeks ago.

I have DV plates on my vehicles. I paid a one-time extra fee to get this type of plate on my secondary vehicles (get one DV plate free, $50/ea for any additional vehicles).

The DV plates get me into any state parks/recreational areas free of charge and without having to stop and get a daily or annual pass.

I'll be making it clear when I renew my plates that I choose to opt out of their sneaky $40 fee.
