View Full Version : Instant Bridge Modification, I-16 Georgia

Bridge was hit by a dump truck with a raised load of gravel (?). Pushed bridge 6' 'off center' on one end.
I'm guessing these bridges are engineered for some movement but I wonder if they ever consider strikes like this when they design them.
Good link below. It takes a lot of mass to move something like this, well made dump and frame I guess.

Mass x velocity= holy cow!
I wonder if any of the drivers teeth popped out of his skull.
(yes, I am exaggerating) I bet the concussion is bad enough though, even if belted in, the driver may not remember wtf happened. ever.
Just re-stripe it. Problem solved.

I am going to give the engineers a pass on that one. You can only design for so many scenarios, and Cleetus the moron dump truck driver might not have been considered. Regardless, it didn't fully collapse, so gold stars for that fact.

There'll be a surge on bridge users ticketed for crossing yellow line [Sarcasm2]
Elon will tweet that a Cybertruck has the towing capacity of "bridge" and he's sending a midget submarine over to "help".
Some bridges are designed to be on roller bearings on one end to allow movement from thermal expansion. If was also design standard to have a free end to reduce stress and reduce the thickness and amount of steel. Only thing keeping a bridge from moving like that are expansion devices. Some look like interlocking teeth. This is to keep tires from falling into the gap for expansion contraction. This is harder to break. Some expansion devices are a compression rubber fitting that offer no resistance to this kind of loading.
Depending on the bearing device and impact damage the bridge can bexslid back into place.

The bridge was demo'd in record time

Dump box is missing a truck.
I have to wonder if the front/cab was lifted up and slammed the bottom of the bridge before detaching itself from the dump box.

You're right, that deceleration was likely traumatic.
"Just re-stripe it. Problem solved." Reminds me of a poster where they striped over a dead animal, titled "It's not my job."
