Well, 91/30's are easy to find and cheap, and are usually in pretty good condition. Lately most come with the big pigsticker included. You can get aftermarket stocks from outfits like Choate, and possibly even Boyds (I'd have to check on that one). Ammo is reasonably easy to find, you can still find surplus at the gunshows and through distributors like AIM surplus and J&G. It's also available from Norma, Prvi Partisan, and a couple other mfgs. Difference between the models is usually barrel/stock length, type of bayonet mount (permanent like the M44 or takeoff like the 91 and 91/30), and maybe sights as the Finns captured loads of these and converted them to their own patterns. The Finns are the best of the bunch, and the best of those was the M39 but they're harder to find now and more expensive. The actions are all the same, triggers all the same. I think someone is making an aftermarket trigger for them, I think I saw one in either Brownells or MidwayUSA. A lot of times you can find the 91/30's at Big 5, and sometimes they'll have sales for around $100. You can find them at the gunshows easily, too.

I've had a 91/30 and M44. They are both fun and inexpensive. Locally I see one or two in just about every shop for $125-150. If you really search you can get a 91/30 for $100.
The M44 has the fixed bayonet which I think looks neat but that is just opinion.
Both the M44 and M38 are shorter than the 91/30 so when you shoot surplus ammo the powder doesn't all burn in the barrel and you get an awesome muzzle flash!
All three kick like hell and the buttstock is designed to bash a german skull when the ammo runs out. If you can find one with a good bore that has not been counterbored it will run at least $150 but the accuracy will be better.
There are lots of aftermarket upgrades if you want to bubba it out. Synthetic stocks, scope mounts, sights, etc. They are a lot of fun for the price but you get what you pay for.
thank you!
now, who wants to sell me m44 or m38? :)
I only have a M44 but will be getting a 91/30 pretty soon.
the M44 is awesome! I can't believe how accurate it is. The bayonet is bad ass and destroys old Boom Boxes with ease[Coffee]
Ammo is cheap, easy to find and powerful. Not to mention they are cheap enough you could really try some cool things and see what kind of nice rifle you can end up with.
I was thinking of ordering a couple so I can sporterize one and have another one in its natural state

Spend the $35 and get a C&R license and you can buy all the mosins you want from a distributor. Plus you get all the benefits of owning a C&R license.

Don't hate on me guys but........I've always viewed a mosin as ugly as sin and only good for "loaning" to the guy who shows up at your castle after the shit hits the fan and his dumb ass didn't think to better prepare for this scenario by getting himself a better gun. That's just me though.
I'd love to! Do you have more info how to get the license?
