This isn't really a comparison. I just wanted to share this picture.

When I picked up my 6.5 Creedmoor last year, I just grabbed two boxes of Hornady Precision Hunter 143gr ELD-X. I found that bullet to be extremely accurate. However, I could never find another box again.

In talking to some big game hunter that travels all over the world hunting, he mentioned that everyone wants the 143gr bullets in 6.5 Creed, but he found that 120gr shot better for him. Fast forward several months of looking for the 143gr ELD-X with zero results and I started looking up articles and forum posts about what people were using in 6.5 Creed. I saw a few 120gr bullets that were rated higher than the heavier weight bullets in some article that I read. I was eventually able to get my hands on the Superformance GMC 120gr. I took the rifle back out today to re-zero and work out drops and shot both at a steel plate (thanks KevDen). The GMX bullet is solid copper that is supposed to retain 95% of it's weight upon impact, which appears to be a big reason it can get away with being recommended for elk. Hornady recommends it for all North American big game up to moose.

Anyway, I took the kid out with me today. I only had 9 of the 143gr left, so I had her lay down in the dirt, explained the basics of the scope and the hold over, and had her take a few shots. She's had no rifle training. In fact, I've had no formal rifle training either, if that explains how little she's had. These 4 shots are at 210 yards; two were hers, and two were me. I was very proud of her connecting without ever having done this before.

Next up was the GMX 120gr after I re-zero'd the rifle for that round. I was super impressed with how much of each round stayed in-tact. Kind of hard to see in the photos, but each hole has a beautiful copper petal inside. This gives me pretty high hopes that it will in fact retain most of it's weight once it goes through an animal. If you look close, you can see that one of us put a round partially into one of the first holes and now that hole is half full of copper instead of lead. I think two of the GMX were done at 210 yards, and 4 at 381 yards. Again, she laid in the dirt and put 2 of 2 on the steel at 381 yards.

We both also hit bowling pins at 210 yards. The one on the right had been shot right in the middle by me just before the first picture. The entry point is so small it was difficult to even find. The exit was as large as the splash marks in the steel.

In general I find that you can go lighter with the solid copper bullets. They are longer than the same weight of copper/lead construction. The bullet also tends to remain whole and mushroom out when impacting an animal, so you get maximum penetration, even thru bone.

If you are wanting to load your own, Barnes makes a 127 gr bullet for the 6.5 that you may want to give a try. I?ve found that their bullets tend to do better with hotter loads on the published scale.

I'm interested in loading my own, both for just long range shooting on my own, and hunting. I wasn't aware of the claims of the Superformance designation from Hornady and would like to look into that some more as well.

Very cool dude.

Glad she was able to get some hits also.
