View Full Version : Stihl Chainsaw Rebuild
Have a 16yr old Stihl MS290 that’s tired, compression low. Suggest someone/shop to rebuild it for me.
Thanks
Ace Hardware has some saw shops that will rebuild. Sounds like rings.
I would probably call some Ace hardware. SOme have a different policies on those customer rebuild stuff.
Meanwhile, you can probably "borrow" a Stihl Chainsaw from someone here. I am sure someone here owns a Stihl Chainsaw.

I don?t have anyone to recommend near you, but if you look for the authorized dealers they will either repair or know someone who does in the area.

not super close to idaho springs, but the Big Tool Box (ACE) in Centennial works on Stihls.
Closer:
Nederland
Lakewood-Kipling and Bowles
Fairplay
Evergreen (maybe)

Do it yourself, it is not difficult.
Piston, rings, pulse line, fuel line and fuel filter. Won’t cost you more than $100.
Watch for vacuum leaks.
The 290 is a good saw and worth a rebuild.
I have a trio of 026’s and a 271 sitting in the garage I need to rebuild.

026 probably the best model to have unless you have a need to run huge bars.

Ya, looked around at a couple different cylinder/piston kit options to do it myself. Studied the parts exploded view, watched a couple videos… doesn’t look that hard. The 290, 310, 390 use the same cylinder, carb… Cylinder bored out for larger piston is the only difference. Tempting to go with a 390 cylinder/piston kit.
I think they also make cylinder sleeves.
