There's a bunch of reasons, but one is... Have you ever seen someone's trampoline sailing through the air, or sitting in some neighbor's yard after a really windy day? Imagine that but far more destructive.

It's really a mixed bag of shades of gray, I'm not sure where to come down on the whole issue. One thing for sure, it's difficult to take a cut-and-dried position like "Ma feedom!"

There is already a mechanism to prevent the issues you are describing...

Permits and Inspections. Most car ports are bigger than allowed without them.

This is very likely just another instance of some whiny b!tch-a$$ bureaucrats that don't like the look of carports in their neighborhood that likely doesn't have an HOA. So they go for city wide regulation...

I once found many trampoline parts through my pasture. What was left after it went through my property crossed the state highway and self destructed on the fence on the other side.

Still don't know who's it was.

I have visited post Katrina hurricane area and carports held up better then roofs. I put one in afterwards.
Colorado Springs is a bunch of petty tyrants worried about property values based on their values. The actual owners haves lost value due to lack of choice.of what they can do with their stuff

Apparently it's not most of the city that's like that, it's basically a bunch of whiney bitches in Old North End causing all the issue. Of course, that's the rich liberal section, so they get what they want.

The North Nevada Ave and Colorado College area?

Exactly. They could have always just got the exclusion for themselves, but it's that uppity area and gotta be a pain to the rest of the city.

"The structures also cannot have untreated wood, unpainted metal, and must match the color of the body or trim of the primary structure."

This is someone who loves HOA's it's not for safety or logical reasons. The city is all for it because it gives them money and power.
