Hello all, thought I would tap the knowledge base for some mag help/advice. My AR came with 5 steel mags from Chartered Industries of Singapore. The steel ones seem well built, except that they don't lock in without a good bit of filing of the mag catch window. Does anyone have experience with these mags?

On a side note, are stainless steel mags worth it or will GI mags last a long time? Any brands of both that stand above the rest?

I don't have any experience with Chartered Industries; however I do have some C Products SS mags that I like. All of my 6.5 Grendel AR mags are C Products, and I've been happy with them. Prices are good too.

I have a number of Aluminum GI mags. A few are worn to the point that the gold anodizing is plainly visible, but they still work great. All these I put a new mag spring and magpul follower in. No issues.

I think all 5 are out of spec. I gutted them and tested fit and function with just the body. Won't lock in on a closed bolt; bolt hits the feed lips and stops halfway if inserted on open bolt. I'm considering just dumping all my alums for steel and Pmags since I just found cracked feed lips on 2 of my Brownells this morning...so thanks for the advice about CProducts, Troublco!

One more note on the C Products - If you don't want to pay everyone's markup price on them, you can order them direct from C Products. It takes a little longer to get them, but if you don't mind waiting a little while they're cheaper that way. 30 round 5.56 are about $12 (black teflon coated) 5 and 20 round 6.5's are $14. May be you can get another mag or two than by paying someone's markup.

Ok thanks again, I'll order a couple to test fit and function, then go for the whole enchilada if all is GTG.

And Happy Birthday!
