The NFL announced Madden's unexpected death on Tuesday

NFL legend John Madden died Tuesday at the age of 85, the league announced in a statement.

"On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

I could have sworn that Madden died last week. I even said something to my son about it on Saturday.

I'm not a sports guy at all, but EVERYONE knew who Madden was and his quircky manor of announcing plays.

I always liked how he would start by talking about a play and then delve off into some weird topic. I will paraphrase one below that always stuck with me.


He really put some mustard on that pass. Speaking of mustard, I really like hotdogs. Do you like hotdogs, Pat? I like them with lots of mustard but some people prefer them with ketchup. Are you a mustard or a ketchup guy?

When he was a Raider I (of course) hated him. But Madden surely made MNF fun.

MNF was never the same after Madden was replaced. Some of his rambles never made any sense but they added personality and spirit to the coverage.
