View Full Version : Is this 30 carbine safe to shoot?
I'd guess it's fine but figured I should double check. The lead seems to show some corrosion and is a funky shape. Can I shoot this in a WWII 30 caliber carbine?

The only time I seen that in my own ammo - were 22lr that was stored under a leaky case of bottled water. I did end up with a high number of duds in that brick of 22lr.
WWII ammo will be corrosive, if you wanted to try some tests, pull the bullet and:
1-verify that the powder looks fine, no clumps
2 - check inside the case and make sure that there is no oxidation inside
3 - verify primer is good (test fire empty case) - the primer is corrosive - so clean the rifle that day
4 - weight the pulled bullet
5 - test burn the powder
If I had a a real WWII carbine, I would say - not worth the risk, best to use non-corrosive ammo...
The last step would be to hit the lead with a green pad to clean off the round...if the oxidation is not that bad I might use the ammo for plinking in a m1 carbine "clone".
The brass looks good, so I would use that to reload some rounds.
Note: I might be going overboard, but those collector M1 Carbines are not cheap anymore. If I prob would just clean the lead part off, and make sure that it looks normal under all that fuzz.

I doubt the ammo is WWII or corrosive, I don?t think any issued .30 Carbine ammo was soft point, it was all FMJ. Was this removed from a box with manufacturer info? If so I might be inclined to shoot it, but if the provenance of the ammo is unknown I?d pass. Worst case you could pull the ammo down and use the brass.
I wouldnt shoot that stuff.
The ammo is not WWII. It's remington and I'd guess made in the last 30 years. I've only got 50 or so rounds, I'll post it for free here as I have no use for the brass.
Thanks,

They look similar to what I have seen on ammo with exposed lead that has been stored in hot and humid conditions for an extended period of time.
What is the cartridge head stamp? I'm curious if you have factory or reloads. Ring indentation on lead soft point looks like a seater plug mark.
I'd pull bullets and save brass

All of it is Remington.
