https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/two-smart-gun-companies-expect-to-hit-market-this-2022/

"The LS9 has four overlapping methods of authentication, and will unlock if one of them is activated. It has a fingerprint reader on the trigger face, an RFID token reader, a PIN pad in the grip and Bluetooth capability to interact with a phone using an app. The Sentry uses an RFID reader tied to a ring the user must wear."

Sounds great. My I-phone fingerprint reader often failed. The bluetooth credit card reader I use frequently has communication issues.

And I don't want to remember to charge my gun or change the batteries.

Why don’t you have one if they are so great?

Let's say it this way.
As you guys know how I think about after warranty service from Tesla for their customer, and i cannot own those vehicles for that reason.

That being said, I would rather own least expensive/desirable Tesla y than that dumb smart gun.

I don't have the solar panels for it yet. The newer Teslas are saying 1.99 seconds to 60MPH and 1020 HP. And kinda saying I prefer my new Dell to my old Sony VAIO...no comparison. As far as electronic safeguards on guns, I could see a working system. Just depends on the mechanism. Same as arguing carburetor vs electronic fuel injection. 50 years ago EFI was just a dream exotic fuel system for me. Now it is mainstream. Same as rockets landing and being readied for another mission.

I think the only features you could trust are RFID and PIN pad. That technology is localized to the gun, very rugged, no SW, and very easy for trusted third parties to validate.
Bluetooth is a vulnerability, especially if the SW behind it is proprietary, and fingerprint readers could not be considered reliable in an emergency.

"The 1911 Sentry is just that, a 1911 with smart gun grips": I could see that type of product (smart grips) taking off, and I could also see a DIY community take that approach for guns that lend themselves to the modification. It's been a while since I saw a pistol with a magazine disconnect but that might be an obvious place to start.

If there's an app to unlock the gun, you can bet your ass that there's a capability for a third party to remotely lock the damn thing, at will.

This for sure.

Politicians can't take away our second amendment yet, so they are trying to control it as much as they can.

This would be my main worry about the smart gun. I’ll keep my revolver backup thank you very much!
