So I dropped a snowplow on my trigger finger today. It took off the end of my trigger finger. Now to use my middle finger.89343

That sucks.
Are they going to try and re-attach it?
Heal fast!

WHOA!!!!! That's gnarly. I was expecting more blood or some dramatic blood squirting action. How is there not blood flowing out of that sucker?

It's been about two hours now. Never bled a lot. They can't reattach.

That looks like it hurts a lot. Good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Option for custom prosthetic fingertip just for trigger pulling?
Ugh. I thought the title was some sort of joke. I hate gory stuff. I could never be a serial killer.
Hope you heal up okay and next time be more careful.

Did bring the chunk with you to the hospital? What did they do with it?
You should ask them for it back. Drop it in a bottle of tequila like a worm.
THAT would be a conversation piece.

Sorry for gory questions, but was the bone cut or pulled out of the joint?
Seems like you might still have enough to actuate a trigger once everything has healed over.

Damn man, that sucks big time. Is it going to affect your work?
I lost a thumb 25 years ago. They managed to re-attach it, which was obviously great. I'm afraid you're about to find out how many times a day your finger brushes up against something unintentionally. I still vividly remember dinging my damn thumb a hundred times a day.
Mine didn't bleed either. I guess it's common in amputations.
Sorry, man. That sucks.

Sorry, man. That sucks.
I managed to get the end of my thumb with a chop saw in High School, resulting in 17 stitches holding the end of my thumb together. Bled like a MF'er...
You're comment about how often your damaged finger/thumb will brush against or bump into something is spot on. Holy hand grenades does it get old.

It severed the last bone 2mm above the joint. They are going to remove what is left of the bone and sew a flap over it. I was able to bring the finger home with me and it is already in a specimen cup with alcohol.
As to my work, the chief thinks I will be off for 6 weeks. I'm shooting for 2-3 weeks, by the end of Feb at the latest.

Haha! That is awesome!
I was just talking shit, thinking about what I would do with the stub.
I knew a guy that had the end of his middle finger get caught in a fence. It was hilarious when he'd stick that thing in his nose. A real deep diver.
On a much more serious note, I hope that wasn't your main picking digit. Trying to train a new finger to explore your sinuses may be difficult. Hopefully you were a pinky digger.

Fwiw, there are a few guys who shoot precision with their middle finger. Nationals & all that. Know one fella that argues his poi improved after training by doing just that.
Heal quickly & keep us updated please.

I worked with a guy who lost 1/2 his pinky in a rock-climbing accident, just pinched it off. No way to reattach it.
He ended up mounting it in a small clear acrylic cube that he takes out of his pocket for good luck when gambling!

Damn brother, that made me cringe. Very sorry to see this...really, very very sorry as I think I threw up in my mouth a bit.
They say the devil is in the details and this is a reminder to me that even the smallest things I do day-to-day could result in such an injury - when you least expect it.
Brother, I hope you heal quickly and don't have to suffer too much with the bumping, etc.
Ouch. Just OUCH!
ETA: As if lefties don't have it hard enough, now you have to deal with this setback.
What is your dominant eye?
Ouchie. Hope that heals up well and soon.
Ouch! Always took extra care around plows.
Will the base of the knuckle work? Shorter trigger pull?

Very thankful for the positive outcome of a unfortunate situation. Your good peeps and I would hate to see you get knocked down too bad.
Sadly your gonna have to pick your nose with your other hand.
Heal well buddy.

Hopefully you heal quickly.
I know someone who is missing that part of their trigger finger, they learned to shoot still using it. I?m sure on some guns this presents a bigger challenge. Middle finger can also be used for some guns.

Holy crap!! Sorry to hear about this. As others have said I hope you heal quickly and get a new technique figured out.

They had to do the same for me but they dont fold it over, they left raw and it grew into around edge. Keeping that last joint allowed me to still pull a trigger with it.

Try to save the finger and put it on a necklace and wear it as a talisman.

What happened?
I lopped mine off with a hatchet while splitting a small log for kindling.

I was just about to post that he should talk to you about losing the trigger finger tip! You beat me to it and with an awesome picture!!!!!!!
Just goes to show you that using your left hand to shoot, just ain't.....RIGHT. JK
That SUCKS. Too bad they could not reattach it. It will heal, hopefully soon.
I know because of the little metal plates and screws in my thumb that they used when they were able to reattach it.
Took a while, but I got about 95% function back, after LOTS of bending etc. therapy.

Oh maaaaaaan. You all are going to make me a nancy with my fingertips now.
I think most of us remit the "can lose fingers" category to the days of high school shop class. I don't even use guards on table saws etc. Sheeeit.

I have a side insurance policy for accidents such as yours. It pays handsomely for a semi missing finger! May want to look into one. Cheap and we have used ours several times for our kid who seems to like breaking arms.
I hope it gets better, and on precision shooting as well.
Now, you will be known as Thomas Beckett (From movie sniper).

I do have a aflac insurance for this, but I would have rather kept the finger. They want to are it off at the joint because they are worried about the nail grow back over the end.
I did go and shoot a .22 rifle today. 9 for 10 at 75 yards with my middle finger, so it isn't too bad. I have also trained to shoot right handed, I'm just not as comfortable with it.
At my captains meeting today, I brought finger foods and no one touched them. My chief was hoping he was going to get some deals on guns until I told him I was out shooting this morning.
Had right middle finger nearly chopped/sliced off on a meat slicer. I was working at deli during spring 96.
They manage to attach the dangling tip at a ER. I had 1 more surgery few mo after ER visit.

I've been fortunate though there have been a few close calls. Never like to see/hear about folks losing appendages....snow blowers seem to be a high percentage of that stuff.
Good lord that gives me the willies! I've made it 66 years and managed to keep all of mine, somehow. Especially considering all the years in machine shops. Lost a few fingernails though.

Me too; mostly.
About 8 years ago at work I was adding RJ-45 (EZ-45) connectors to the end of Cat-6 cables but the blade on the crimper/cutter wasn't doing it's job well so I had to use a knife to cut of the 1/32" extra wires sticking out. I ended up cutting off a lima bean sized chunk off of the top of my right index finger. I super glued it back on and EVERYBODY gave me hell for doing so - except the doctor. The doctor said it was a smart move but wasn't sure it'd reatttach. It did and now you have to look closely to even notice anything ever happened.
I realized at a young age that my family name was cursed with exceptionally bad luck so I've adjusted my level of caution in things I do with the understanding that Murphy has a strong dislike for this Irish bloodline. So far, it's helped me stay relatively intact.

This is what is left.of my trigger finger three weeks after surgery. I felt sorry for myself, so I went out and bought a Vortex Venom 5-25x56 scope and put it on my 20" heavy barrel AR in .223. I got lucky and the first few shots were close enough to the target I didn't adjust it at all. These are the first 3 groups after my surgery. I am still using my trigger finger, but I only feel pressure from bending my finger not from the trigger. Hopefully in a few more weeks the swelling will come down and I will be able to feel the trigger again.897288972989730
On a side note, I missed a coyote the other day with a shotgun. I tried to snap shoot him, felt the pressure in my finger, but my finger wasn't on the trigger. He was gone by the time I realized Iwhat was going on.
Well it looks like it's healing up alright! Good luck getting your tight groups back, but you can rest a little easier knowing you can still hit the target anyway!
