One needs to register a rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches, unless it has no stock, then it is a pistol. Same with a shotgun except the barrel cutoff is 18 inches.

Does this mean if you take Grampa's old bird gun, chop off the barrel and the stock, it is now a pistol? What about his '03-A3 he brought back from the war?

What are the rules on stocks? The shockwave barely has a handle, mare's legs look like a shrunk down stock and I have seen AR braces that are as long as a collapsed shoulder stock.

I don't plan on modifying anything I own like that- they are worth too much these days. But looking at various "pistols" for sale, there doesn't seem to be any consistency on the backside.

From what I can tell, the laws are idiotic. If you buy a "factory made" Mare's Leg by Rossi or Henry - it's a pistol. But if you take a Rossi R92 carbine and cut it down to the exact same thing - it's a felony.

And if you take a "factory made" Mare's Leg and put a regular buttstock on it - that's also a felony. Unless you're in Canada, then it's perfectly fine.

It's insane.

Unless you thread the bbl and throw on a correct length f/hider to bring it to 16". Something like Tacsol offers ,their SBX bbls https://tacticalsol.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=1429309
