I thought one of the selling points of the new airport was NOT having to do this every time it snows?

Gene Amole is spinning in his grave.
He was a columnist for the Rocky Mountain News that reported daily what a fiasco DIA was when it was being planned and built.
He also served under Patton in WWII and had a lot of stories from the foot soldier's point of view - not all complimentary
Slightly off topic. :)
DIA since 1993 had issues. Bonds. Automated baggage devices we almost never used since ~1997? Train issues.
Construction issues 1 2 3 4 5.
Only thing kids like about this airport is thst little train we ride on. Nice walk to A when train is unfunctional can be a great workout w/ 2 luggages

Stapleton would stay open and fly during blizzards. I miss that place.

All that space and investment for nothing. It would definitely be a good breaking ground for zombie as well.

Central Park Airport was awesome. It crosses i70.

Yeah, 'all weather airport" my ass. Yet another boondoggle thanks to Federico Pena

Also. I miss their 70 min free parking about decade+ ago.
Yeah, but who owned and sold the property to the airport?
I just wanted to jump in the “bi?€# about dia” thread. [Coffee]
I like nothing about the place.

Thanks for the link. I did not know the drama it caused for 1 sculpture. Yikes.

I concur with the story- Nothing like an rearing apocalypse horse with glowing red eyes to make you feel safe and calm as your approach the airport for your flight.

Yup. Just ask John McClane!
It was an all weather airport. I remember 200x flying out in a blizzard to Hawaii. Colorado Springs closed but united bussed us to DIA.
About 5 years ago, leadership changed and closure became more common but could still fly in few inches of snow.
Are these recent closures from lack of staffing to clear runways and deicing? Cost of deicing? Or just the feminization of risk analysis in general? This whole "abundance of caution" garbage.
DIA shouldn?t be a long term problem. The way they keep building out east it will be in the middle of town before you know it and everyone will gripe and they?ll build a new airport out east.
Or just the feminization of risk analysis in general? This whole "abundance of caution" garbage.
I bet you?re the kind of guy that throws caution to the wind and rips the warning tags off your mattress.

That's kind of what I thought. The system did seem to work for awhile, but definitely not recently.
Love the blue horse! Wish you could actually stop and walk up to and look at it.
As for closing in snow storms, DIA has the longest commercial runway in North America at 16,000 feet, it is just 1 of 6 runways all of which are longer than the average commercial runway in the US, add on the taxi ways and tarmac between terminals, they simply aren't keeping enough staff to keep enough snowplows running to keep all of it clear, along with DIA has become I believe the 3rd busiest airport in the country, at some point you have more flights trying to come in and go out than you have available takeoff and landing slots. The sheer number of flights coming in and out is amazing. I'm working at a jobsite near one of the light rail stations and there isn't a single point in time during the day that you can't look up and see an airplane.

When I was stationed at Lowry AFB, I was told Denver was the "alternative capital" of the US. This was the height of the Cold War. Maybe that was the cause of all the Apocalyptic art displays. Rocky Flats was in full production mode. I was 17 and could buy beer without being carded when in uniform.
Speaking of DIA abominations. That W hotel and those crappy looking telephone poles are hideous.
All that space and investment for nothing. It would definitely be a good breaking ground for zombie as well.

They couldn't wait to get rid of Stapleton and the runways crossing I-70.
Guess they all forgot about that with this stoopid Central 70 project.

Awesome pic!
I remember all of the highway drama that happened out there.
One evening, one direction was closed for several hours due to cow escaping from a trailer and being frozen in place from fright.

Nothing is more important than re-uniting the marginalized community of Elyria-Swansea, ruthlessly eviscerated by the capitalistic and racist construction of the I-70 viaduct. [facepalm]
I rarely remember how i70 looked like (east of i270). They changed so little at a time since 95.

I spent so much time on the road around Denver and running Parker-Cheyenne back in the 90's, I'm probably in that pic.

Growing up in west LA, we were a few hundred yards away from LAX. The runways crossed over Lincoln Ave. and we frequently saw the big planes crossing. It was a long tunnel under the runway.

Nice picture.
Stapleton had a great place to park off Havana Street that I'm sure some here remember. Landing planes flew low right over the road. That was really something!

Looks like some things never change: What's in the back of the parked truck- old junk bicycles?
After reading many early Stapleton Central Park
Airport story here, it reminds me of when I was young. :)

Yeah, I spent some time parked over there in front of the fence. You could see the rivets on the bottoms of the wings....it was cool man. And I kinda liked the runways over 70 too.
