View Full Version : A Healthy Breakfast

I was having breakfast yesterday morning in a small, local cafe with a friend and there were several regulars in the place...couple of families with kids, too.
The sheriff came in and sat down with his teenaged son and the waitress made a light-hearted comment about not getting his order wrong because he had a gun. I didn't hear exactly what the sheriff said but it had something to do with everyone in the place having a gun...he knew because he'd signed the permits.
At that point most people continued the joke and said that's why the service and food were so good, etc... Most everyone got a kick out of it. Even the families with kids were laughing about it and one of the dad's made mention he and his wife "never leave home without it", obviously referencing their carry guns.
Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and the conversation changed rather quickly and everyone went back to minding their own business.
It struck me, though, how different things are in my community in terms of accepting firearms as a means of personal defense of self, family and community. I can only imagine in small communities all over the country how normal that sort of talk would be. I really felt good about where I chose to live after hearing everyone talking normally about carrying guns...even around kids. I doubt any of the kids will be the type of person who grows into adulthood who is traumatized to think people around them might own and carry guns.
Can you imagine having that conversation in pretty much any metro-area restaurant? I just thought it was refreshing.

Man that is awesome! I wish I was fortunate to live in such a responsible and friendly community. Good to know such a great place still exists....

I live in rural Pueblo county. Its a whole different experience out here. I have 40 acres as do most of my neighbors. EVERYBODY I mean EVERYBODY out here shoots. My neighbor across the road is a retired cop/police firearms instructor. My neighbor to the south is a prison guard, the neighbor to the north is just a guy like me who likes to shoot. I had a lot of reasons for oving out here. One of the biggest reasons is the ability to shoot in my back yard, literally!
When we first moved in, I introduced my self to the neighbors to the north and south. I explained I like to shoot, but would limit the time and duration if they were bothered by the noise. Both laughed and said they were worried the new neighbors (us) might be bothered by their shooting.
The retired cop is a nice guy, but a little reclusive. If I see him outside he always has a gun in his hand as he is most always shooting. He will pause to wave...
The Pueblo county Sherriff's deputies who patrol the area are pretty laid back. I had just blasted a rattlesnake one day and still had my shotgun in hand. The rattlesnake was by the mailbox right by the road. I saw a Sheriff's car coming down the road. I waved. They officer waved back and kept driving.
Try that in the city!
I love living out in the sticks!!!!

Sounds like a very pleasant conversation! Love the small town 'feel' to this! This is the real America!

We have gunfire in my neighborhood almost every night....I live in Aurora...LOL [LOL]
Actually, I am just north of the police range near Buckley, so it sounds like downtown Beirut some nights, particularly as 10 pm approaches, and they have to quit shooting, so they empty their magazines, rather than having to unload 'em....

My wife and I bought this house about 8 years ago. It's on 16 acres and is surrounded on two sides by about 600 to 800 vertical feet of mountain with nothing on it. I have a good backstop.
One day not long after we bought the place a guy who lives on the other side of the mountain (600 feet above and 1/2 mile away) complained to the sheriff's dept about me shooting. Well, I know all of the deputies and they know me very well. They are 100% confident I would not shoot in an unsafe manner.
But, 2 deputies came out basically to BS. They asked what I was shooting...don't remember what it was at the time but they thought it was pretty cool. Then one of them...a friend of mine...got a big s**t-eating grin on his face and said, "Wait'll you see what I just got issued." He went back to his patrol car and returned with a brand new HK UMP-40...yes, select-fire. He said we could shoot it but he didn't have any ammo. Well, Hell! I owned a gun store. Ammo was not a problem.
Long story short we went through about 600 rounds of ammo to "break in" the UMP. The Sgt eventually showed up with a real USGI surplus (department issued, of course) Winchester M14, also with a fun switch.
The neighbor with the house that overlooks part of my property...the one who complained? After seeing 3 patrol cars and hearing a butt-load of automatic rifle fire, has never complained again.

I hear ya! My old house in the Springs was in a neighborhood called Knob Hill. AKA the white ghetto. Guys in the Springs will know what I'm talking about. Gunfire was a pretty common thing at night. Especially on the weekends. The police helecopter, AKA the ghetto bird, was constantly 100' above the houses at night spotlighting some fleeing criminal, and the very first murder of 2008 was one block from my house. It was time to move....

Great stories... so, a quick question for Bailey guns... next time someone complains and you happen to have 3 patrol cars and lots of time on your hands... can you give me a call to come participate in the "fun" switches?! HAHA.

I talked to a Girl that works at Bass Pro, she has NEVER been up here and she was born and raised in CO....
Crap my post # sux so I gotta post again.
I'm not worried about the mountains my friend. I just worry about running out of ammo! HA. I'll have to admit though, I've been in CO for about a year now and I have still not gotten around to trying to ski.
I was born here and just found out that lift tickets are up to like $80 for one day now. Screw that.
Yeah, ski rentals are the close to the same price, lodging WAY more expensive, etc. Too much for me, but one day. That seems to be my motto of late, "one day". HA.

I hear ya' Big Bear! I live in the perpetual state of "IF"....
Yep, just moved here, already found a way to get myself and my truck stuck in the mountains twice. I love this state. Bad calls always make the best stories.
Down in Arizona I lived near a little town called Catalina. One day that comes to mind, I dropped my car off at a mechanics to get some work done as I couldn't get my brake calipers off with the tools I had and decided I would walk to a range near by and go shooting while he was working. Strapped the AR to my back and walked 4 miles down main street to the range. I fully expected to waste a cops time dealing with a complaint, but not even a funny look.
I do miss how every road ended in desert and shooting ranges, but someday with luck, I will own some land I can shoot on too.
"...local cafe...struck me, though, how different things are in my community in terms of accepting firearms as a means of personal defense of self, family and community."
Where at, the Cutthroat? I'm not too far North, on Conifer Mountain East, near the top. While it is certainly "more urban" over here we, too, have nothing but "strong acceptance" and gun ownership is oft-discussed around the hill. I'm fortunate to be tucked-away on a dead-end and next to great neighbors that are not too close but...while I've heard reports in the area, I've never fired any of my weapons up here. Doubtful anyone would freak-out if I did but...
I will say this though, there are plenty of turd Socialists around these parts, more than I care for or remember from years past (just spending time in the Pinecam Study confirms the losers are here en masse). I could see one of those whiny cock-suckers cryin' about a public dicussion of arms.
In any event, nice story and thanks for sharing.
PS - I went by your ol' shop the other day, signs still up?

Yep...it was at the Cutthroat. Where else? Bailey's kind of a cool place. Lots of us all-American rednecks around. Just the way I like it.

Riding behind an ATV on an innertube in the mountains... THAT sounds like some fun... Think we can map out a course of fire and tag some targets as we slip by? lol... better stop, the redneck is coming out.
I don't get the second reference... am I missing something in regards to "Sky Crow Hill" or is that the area in which you reside?
I would love to own some acreage out in the sticks somewhere, but unfortunately, there's not much of a call for a musician out there.

Yep I lived there too after I moved out of my Parents house in the 80's. When someone knocked on the door I answered with a .357. :) I lived on East Hills Road, and called the cops often on the neighbors across the street in the ghetto apartments. I at least lived in a ghetto front duplex.

Around 91 or so, a couple neighbors and I went hunting up around Weston Pass one October. One of them had a cabin up near there. We were out driving the road up to the pass to get to an area we wanted to hunt, and we came across a Toyota pickup nosed into a ditch. The couple that had been in it were standing on the road, admiring the scenery and smooching like they didn't have a worry in the world.
We stopped, offered to help pull them out (which we did) as they were the only other vehicle we'd seen that morning and were fairly sure there might not be another soon, and were standing there talking to them when the gal suddenly stopped talking. Her eyes got about as big around as dinner plates, and she grabbed her husband's arm and started mouthing gibberish that sounded a lot like "They've got guns! Ohmygod, they've got guns!" over and over. We were each wearing a revolver in a holster on our belts, right out in the open, and they hadn't noticed them until then. Then Slick got really excited, thanked us in the fastest manner he could, they jumped in the truck and tore out of there. The other two with me looked at each other and then at me and asked what the heck happened. I told them what I'd heard, and we all had a good laugh.
That just illustrated to me how stupid folks that think like that are. I mean, seriously, if we'd wanted to do anything, we certainly wouldn't have pulled their truck out first! If someone had been going to do something to them they'd have popped Slick first and then done what they wanted to with Mrs. Slick. There was enough snow up there, and few enough people around that time of year, nobody would have known anything until Spring. And until she saw our sidearms, neither one of them had a problem. Idiots. More proof of my theory that OSHA has allowed too many of the stupid ones to live long enough to breed.

We take the ATV'S up alot in the summer over Georgia Pass, Hall Valley etc.
we always have had our open carry pistols on our sides and never had a negative response from any of the goofy flat landers, out of state'ers, and just in general peeps. We have even driven into Breck from Tiger Run and no one seemed to notice.

First thing I’m going to do when the market picks up (assuming the ‘great one and co.’ hasn’t f’d things up completely) is buy a property with land.
Shooting on your property = bliss!
Until then I’ll have to make do with annoying my hippie neighbor by sitting on my porch and cleaning my rifle[/font]J Yeah I know childish!

This thread makes me want to move out of the city - especialy since the wife and I are trying to concieve. Want my children to be raised in an environment rooted in good values and away from the 'city' mind set.
I don't have it too bad here in the S/W Springs - Cheyenne Meadows area.
Although we do hear automatic weapons fire frequently (and some far off artillery......)
due to the proximity of the Carson firing range. Thank God for the US military!
Neighbors on either side are gun owners - one just brought over his .308 and .40 for me to hold while they are out of town - the other - retired USAF - has become active since I moved in - we have managed to get him a .357, two .22's and this Christmas - a new XD in 9mm.
Neighbor across the street works for the USOC and was over one day while I was 'cleaning' - lots of targets in the garage - guns etc - she just commented "looks like some good shooting" - so I'll call her a good one too.
I tell ya - it makes a big difference - knowing your neighbors and trusting them.
Good thread - I loved the town of Bailey while I was there - bought my Kimber from Bailey Guns - Love the sign - "Alchohol, Tobacco, Firearms" I get a kick out of that!
It is kinda cool livi'n up here. Don't mind the 1 hour + ride to town to get stuff, makes ya feel relaxed when you round that curve on 285 and see the Kenosha Range.
My nearest neighbor is a FED Cop, and luvs Sigs. So we get along well.
As for that Bailey Guns Guy,,,,LOL,,, He is Great, and not just cause he likes guns and Harleys.
