View Full Version : I need traps
I have a problem out here with rabbits. They are eating my car. I need the most vile traps I can get. Snares, decapitators, high voltage, whatever. I don't want to do the live traps, as these ALL need to die. Where can I obtain them? I haven't seen them hanging on walls like a few years ago.
I do not have any cats or anything around my property, so catching some kid's pet isn't on my radar.

Probably a little small but a good idea...

It takes some due diligence, but soon you will notice a difference.

I can't shoot em fast enough. Generally, they are near the car, so I don't want to risk damage there. I need something that I can set out to eliminate them. If they see me, they're off to the races.
I got lucky and got one a few days ago, just because I slammed his head between the hood and the cowl.

Just get some picture wire and start putting out snares...
Or search "small game snares" and see the dozens of offerings from places like amazon, scheels, etsy, bass pro, cabelas, etc.
Bass pro and cabelas don't seem to have them in-store. Scheels is a 3hr round trip for me. Amazon doesn't really have them.
I was hoping someone knew of a local source with them on a shelf. This rabbit did $400 worth of damage in 2 days. He needs gone now.
Sportsman's might have an option, so going to look there and at Boomgaars today.

Did you check with that ranch store just west of Watkins?
The only legal traps in Colorado are live traps and apples pieces work well as bait. I bought a trap at Big R in Elizabeth a few years ago but Amazon will also sell them.
You mentioned not having cats, I don't like the little bastards but that could help.
Are they chewing up electrical wiring or just nesting for the family? I've heard of chemical (Cayan pepper etc.) repellants and sonic deterrents but they have mixed reviews.
They are chewing wiring to my coils, oil pressure sensor, and cam actuators.
Tried some of the repellent stuff, no dice.

I'm pretty certain that I would qualify under the exceptions there

Good point. I always forget about O'malleys

Ive got a good sized live trap that works well for rabbits. Welcome to use it for a while. Lmk

No, but we've never been cat people. My bird wouldnt like that either.
Wifey is done with pets for a while anyway after she lost her dog.
If I have to end up with a live trap, I'm going to end up shooting it, don't want to shoot someone else's stuff.
Murdoch’s?
Another good option. Guess I'm going for a drive today

A good deterrent is a net bag with mothballs under the vehicle. They like the wires because soy oil is used in the manufacturing process. I had to rewire the fuel pump on one of my trucks. The rodents don't like the smell of mothballs. It is a pain to find a place to zip tie the bag of mothballs, but over the fuel tank is a good start. Hope this helps.

Large rubbermaid trash can filled with water, or exhaust hose in lid. Not the most humane (but you're past that at this point) but more friendly to the traps.
I'm not sure about rabbits, but my cousin lives out is same area and had a similar situation with mice. Peppermint oil worked as a deterrent for him. Smells better than moth balls.

Online is likely your only option for non live traps. I have so rarely seen the non live traps around in CO since the laws were changed. Ranch stores are your best bet, but I would call them before going there.

Live traps are death traps with a couple of extra steps. They work great out here for skunks and children. I mean rabbits.

Combination of all the above suggestions is best bet.
Not likely to find snares, leg hold traps or body grip devices in stock at farm or sporting/outdoors stores.
I have checked Tractor Supply and Murdochs, humane/live traps only. Some poisons available. Bomgaars is a possibility but doubtful.

Guess a guy could use oxy/acetilyne torch. Fill burrow with gas and flash by hand.

Looking like sportsmans is going to be my closest friend. Showing some options, but you know how online inventories are.

We used to blow up ant hills that way back in the day.
Yeah, not near other explosive matl.
I used to fill milk jugs with welding gas and use a broken flashbulb to ignite it. Made great theatrical tools.
I suspect some 1000 steel wool would burn with a electric spark. Gives you a bit of stand off.
Dead rodents could become animal feed.

Probably easier to hold peppermint, than a moths wings.

I bought one of those at Cabela's in Lone Tree to use for squirrels, was surprised to find them there. Have never used it, fucker's so damn strong I'm scared of getting bit by it. It'd crush a finger for sure! My arthritic old hands can't set the damn thing either.
