Clear Creek County commissioners have recommended a new name to submit for state and federal review.

The new name for the famous 14er would be Mount Blue Sky, if approved by higher authorities.

In 2020, as Black Lives Matters protests helped fuel a renewed attention on racist symbols within the state, Gov. Jared Polis formed an advisory board (https://www.cpr.org/2020/07/02/mount-evans-name-change-colorado-advisory-board-announced/) that would review and recommend changes to geographic landmarks.

More history down the memory hole.

Typical leftist stupidity. Not surprising though it is disappointing. It'll always be MT Evans to me.

Fuck you, it's Mt Evans.

While the Sand Creek incident is a black mark on John Evans time as Governor it sure is funny how nobody remembers the good he served both nationally and at a state level.

To coin a phrase: When we do right no one remembers - when we do wrong no one forgets.

Fred Mosqueda, the Arapaho Coordinator for the language and culture program within the Education Department of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes in Oklahoma. thinks Mount Blue Sky is a name for everyone.

It is such a happy name. It is for a beautiful ceremony. It is for beautiful people. This was our homeland here - so, when we come to Colorado, when we look west and we see Mount Blue Sky, [we will] feel happy. We [will] feel like we are at home.

Four other names were proposed through the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board to replace Mount Evans: Mount Cheyenne-Arapaho, Mount Evans (to honor Evans daughter instead), Mount Rosalie, and Mount Soule. But the Clear Creek County Board of County Commissioners voted on March 15, 2022, to recommend Mount Blue Sky to the state and federal naming boards and Governor Polis.

Hey, I have an idea. Why not name Mt Evans after the Governor's daughter.
It will not cost anything to change the maps, the road signs, etc

I was wondering the same thing.
I had some land in Westcliffe that I recently sold.
Maybe Wet Mountain County

Or is that too suggestive

Mount Soule?

That one took a bit of digging.

Silas Soule was in command of the 1st Colorado Cavalry in which he refused an order to participate at Sand Creek.

I was hoping it was a misprint and they were going to name it for Thomas Sowell, the economist.

However, I think we are all dancing around this and should rename the mountain in honor of the bestest governor Colorado could ever hope for, the future President of the US and likely supreme ruler of Earth, his revenant benevolence, Mount Polis!

(In this case mount is a name, not a verb)

It was originally Mt. Rosalie.

It was renamed Mt. Evans to honor a governor who was forced to resign, 30 years after his resignation. Evans had no personal involvement in the massacre, but did try to rationalize and even defend it. Thus, it ultimately cost him politically. Personally, I think it's many decades far removed to give a shit either way about what he did, but on the other hand,

Out of all the things to be outraged about and hills to die on, I'm fairly unconcerned about this one. It's not like it's "Mt Saint Bruce Jenner" and it's also not like a true historical name either, nor does such a name ever really educate on history. How many Gen Z's do you think have looked up Mt. Evans, and then John Evans, etcetera? It's just a name to 99.9% of the people, and I bet - prior to it being a news item - even most conservatives were not all that well informed on its namesake. It is just "Mt. Evans" to 99.9% of people, with no meaning attached to the name.

It's already a renamed rename for a mountain, the most it has been is just a familiar name while we've been alive. Spending money and wasting legislative resources is dumb, but other then that, it's not the end of the world.

This revisionist BS makes my brain hurt. It's HISTORY...we don't get to vote on it or impart our safe space woke nonsense upon it, it already happened. An we are all here as a result of those who came before us, good, bad or indifferent. Ugh.

New names proposed for Colorado landmarks

DENVER (KDVR) - The Colorado Department of Natural Resources held a meeting Sunday with the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board.

"My feeling on these is they all use the derogatory term squaw,? a member of the board said. ?

The board was?established?by Governor Jared Polis to evaluate proposals concerning name changes, new names, and name controversies of geographic features and certain public places in the State of Colorado. After this, official recommendations are made to the Governor.?

"I too think the name is offensive and should be changed," a member of the public who spoke during the public comment section of the zoom meeting said. ?

The meeting was focused on consideration of the local government, Tribal and general public renaming proposals related to the U.S. Department of Interior's Secretarial Order 3404, which declares "squaw" a derogatory term.??

"Tribal governments have a special process through this, that will extend to the end,? the leader of the meeting stated.

The word is offensive to Native American women. Many people of the public are chiming in pitching names they favor the location.

?It?s a magnificent mountain. It's the first thing we see every day and the last thing we see every evening," one public commenter said.

On a related note, the DOW is having a meeting this week.

Among other items on the agenda, is "updating the common name" of ptychocheilus lucius, otherwise known as the squawfish.

Not sure why they are meeting.
Looks like Pikeminnow or White Salmon has already been adopted

The Northern Pikeminnow is a large member of the minnow family native to the Pacific slope of Western North America.
Formerly known as "Northern Squawfish", the name was changed to Northern Pikeminnow by the American Fisheries Society in 1998.
Because of the offensive connotation attributed to the word “squaw,” these animals are also referred to as pikeminnows.
Squawfishes are long, large-mouthed, pikelike fishes.
Voracious carnivores, they make lively sport fishes.
The largest species, the Colorado River squawfish, or white salmon (P. lucius), may grow to about 1.5 metres (5 feet) with a reported weight of about 36 kilograms (79 pounds); because of changes in its habitat, this species has declined significantly and is considered endangered.

But, you can not satisfy everyone

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Montana opposed the change, saying the name “Mount Blue Sky” could be considered sacrilegious because a Northern Cheyenne ceremony uses the “blue sky” words and concept.

Ditto, will always be Mt. Evans to me as well.

A name change, why? To make someone feel good about themselves or what? Good lord, sick and tired of the Nambi Pandy's trying to appease everyone, so no one gets offended.
