My boy turned 12 on Saturday. Bought him a rifle he absolutely did not want, and an enormous box of Pokemon cards he actually did.
Told him now that he was 12, I'd take him to see the new Batman Movie.
Me: It's a little more violent than the Spiderman movie we saw last month, so if it gets to be too much, let me know.
Boy: I'm 12 now, Dad. I can handle a little violence.
Me: Fair enough.
Boy: And also a little nudity.
Me: So noted.
Wife shot coffee out of her nose and had a choking fit. I kept a straight, flat face, but I've been cracking up over it all evening.
Son has to look after dad ya know! [emoji106]

That "I'm 12 now" reminds me of a story my mom told about me. When I'd turned three, we went on a plane to visit my grandmother. She'd gotten me a brand new pacifier. When she handed it to me, I reacted in disgust, "Free [sic] year olds don't use pacifiers!" And I never used one since.

Priceless! Good luck and I'm sure he'll grow into enjoying the rifle with you after only a couple simple range trips!

Outstanding!
I'd like to hear about that rifle he absolutely did not want. I imagine he's been shooting with you many times before.
I began shooting at age five with my Grandpa's Remington .22, which I still have. But, I didn't get my own .22 rifle until my 12th birthday. It was a complete surprise. Three years later I bought my own with money from mowing lawns.

I am sure the crunchy socks will be here soon enough. I warned my wife about it. She said boys are gross. I said yes, yes we are.
As to the rifle, my son is not that interested in shooting, so this was a gift I wanted him to have, and not one he wanted himself. He will begrudgingly go twice a year and wants icecream after about 15 minutes, which I generally oblige. I get it, because at 12 years old I thought rifles were needlessly loud and heavy as well. But he is going to scout camp this year, and I figured it would be a good time to teach him some very basic skills. I wanted to get a CZ 457 Scout, which has the single shot adapter and comes with the shorter length of pull. I haven't been able to get one in six months, so I bought him a Bergara BMR. When a Scout becomes available, I will snap one up to teach him iron sights.
Got this enormous Vortex because it was under $500 and had a parallax that could be focused at 15 yards. I also liked that it had the turret markings and reference directions clearly visible from the back of the scope. I plan to teach my boy a very basic version of using mils.
