View Full Version : All things manly
With a few exceptions, most of the people here lean towards the masculine side of our species.
I thought I would make this thread for discussing anything manly- cigars, shaving, work boots, tools, whatever.
I?ll kick it off with the fact that I?ve decided to trim up for the summer but never enjoyed or got decent results from shaving with any of the modern, multi blade razors so decided I would give a traditional safety razor a try and I?ve been loving it. No more clogged blades, high prices, or crappy shaves. Just the same quality shave your grandad and his dad had back in the day.

Manly …
I like driving pickup trucks, riding motorcycles, shooting guns, working on motorcycles and guns and truck. Does doing these things make a female manly?? I have to shave but don’t like it because it is irritating. My wife shaves too and she doesn’t like it either. I drink spirits on occasion and so do women I know.
My wife says she loves me because I am a manly man. That’s all I need.

I love impregnating my wife, or trying, as well as a good single malt, camping (with camp fires), my truck, fast car, guns and reloading. I hope that qualifies me for talking here. I’ll be sure to contribute details about most of those things… except perhaps the first one.

My 4 year old regularly tells his mom "I can do it myself mom, I'm a grown man!".
He snuck a sip of my nearly empty beer can from the table when he was 3. When his sister told on him and I asked him if it was true, he admitted it, like a man, saying "Yup. And it's was GOOD".
He got in trouble. But I'd be lying if I wasn't proud by how he owned it like a true grown man. Don't tell CPS.
So if he's that much of a man already, he must be learning from his manly dad.

If it is called Toxic Masculinity by the left then Im all about it.
But really, Old timey shaving and barbershop type colognes, aftershaves and hair tonics.
Other than that just good old manly things. The women at work really appreciate when you can fix something for them.
They love it.

Not necessarily Amigo.
Your suggestion while admirable relies on certain spatial orientations of the parties involved for the subject matter of my post to be relevant.
My statement is universal and non specific.

On the topic of boots:
At one point in my life, I did field work for 12-15 hours a day. Those days are past me, but I still have very specific taste in a quality work boot. Leather, uninsulated, solid ankle support, waterproof. I used to love the Timberland Pro series because it checked all those boxes, but the last two pairs I had only lasted two years before the souls started separating. I am currently wearing some Ariat 9-hole lace ups that check all the boxes, and have held up surprisingly well for four years now. But the toe box is way narrower than the Timberland Pros, and these days when I am in the field for a few hours, my toes let me know it.
Anyone got any manly suggestions for a wider leather lace-up boot that is uninsulated and waterproof?
And also a mammography enthusiast.
May differ from the crowd a bit but In my mind masculine doesn?t have to follow the hard grizzled steak potatoes or what ever.
Raised with people of any and all genders that get things done. If it needs fixed or done it gets fixed and done. I?ve tended farm animals and fixed equipment at silly hours with any possible combination of gender binary or not that we can think of.
Do what you can and are able to help those no matter the species that need It.
Oh yeah
And don?t be an asshole.
That?s masculine to me

Lace up? You kids these days.
Fifty plus years doing manly things has taken its toll on my body. I can barely manage to get my socks on. There?s no way I could reach down long enough to lace up boots.

In the past 3 weeks I've: installed a new mailbox, watched countless hours of YouTube DIY videos, installed 1100+ sq ft of vinyl plank flooring, upgraded all electrical outlets in the house, installed new trim throughout the house including around the windows, moved the previously installed mailbox to a location 20' away because my carrier is retarded, installed brick paneling in the kitchen and dining room, started prepping for a whole house generator install, installed an electric-powered anode in the water heater and I'm about to run a propane line for a new gas kitchen stove and fireplace in the living room. In between all of that I'm installing new cabinets in the kitchen. And in my spare time I'm moving stuff from the old place in Olustee to the new place.
I don't know if that's manly or not, but it's been a metric shit-ton of work.
And I've been to Home Depot about 387 times... Sometimes 3 or 4 times in one day. Mostly because I can't remember half the things I need, forget something the first or second or third time, or something I did remember to get just doesn't work. I always make a list of everything I need and then conveniently find that list on the table by the door...where I left it...when I get back from Home Depot.

Have to re-case a window, install and re-case a door, run cat5 and coax to one more room, fix settling in the backyard, and more. Ugh.

Looks like lawn care season is going to be kicking off very soon at my house. Probably ought to try and get the first mow of the season in this weekend but with Easter on Sunday I might try and put it off until next weekend. Yay.

Redwings or danners.
I tend to walk out a pair of boots in 9 months to a year. I've been happy with bates tactical sport 8" side zip and a can of water proofer both from scheels. Side zip allows me to lace tight for inclines and unzip for windshield time. They absolutely fall apart walking in flood waters for a day though. Still for $80 I carry a spare pair.

Does telling your wife "make me some hash browns and eggs bitch" count if it worked?....... I'm kidding of course. It is however a standing preface to any topic between her and I in fun.
Manly is subjective, as women can do a lot of manly shit and sometimes better than men do. I would add that age and having to get something done while battling adversity certainly plays a factor. I had hand surgery today and I'm gonna try to mow the front yard tomorrow which involves moving a lot shit around in the barn to get the mower ready in the first place. Manly?....fuck I dunno. But I'm gonna try.

Being stubborn and doing shit you shouldn't do because you want to get it done is most definitely manly. Ain't no surgery gonna keep you from mowing!

A little late to the party on boots, but Carolina Boots 28 Series is my go to.
After years in the O/G world, tower climbing, etc, they are still the most comfortable and most durable that I have found. I can get about 2 years out of a pair where as Ariats, RedWings, etc (all the big brands) were good for about 1 year.
Don?t bring rational and common sense into this!
Those both seem to be manly traits.

Here's something manly for ya...
We really need cabinet and countertop space in the new house. And we needed new cabinets...badly. We wanted to maximize the amount of cabinet and countertop space. We needed one cabinet along a wall next to the fridge...it's a short wall. I measured the wall and the space for the base cabinet. Great. 40" cabinet will be wonderful. 39" is the largest they have that will fit in the space. Close enough.
Get the cabinet home and start to install it. Fits into the space but doesn't line up with the edge of the wall cabinet above the fridge. What the hell? The cabinet is the correct size. Unfortunately, I made a 1 1/2" error in measuring the wall. I slid the tape behind the fridge till it stopped and measured. Unfortunately, it stopped against a water pipe for the fridge dispenser.
So now I have cabinets that don't fit between the fridge and the doorway into the utility room.
What Would a Manly Man Do?
Move that damn door. So that's what I did. Move a door opening so a larger cabinet will fit.
Luckily, it was actually pretty easy to fix my colossal fuck-up. I just had to take the pre-hung door out that I just installed, remove the trim piece on one side that I left in place when it was just an opening, nail in a 2x4 and rehang the door. It gave me an extra 2 1/4 inches along the wall for the 39" cabinet and allows plenty of space for the countertop.
I would endure any amount of hay/grass if only to spend more time with my grandfathers who passed before I was old enough to participate :|

Blackstones are the shit! Cooking your entire meal on a flattop really does make you feel manly. You can cook every meal of the day on a griddle. For an army. And we do. I love to use it when we have people over because I can bang out a ton of food in a short time.
