View Full Version : Straight from my mother-in-law mattress...help with "old " banknotes.

Well, my mother-in-law decided to cash out her stashed money.
There are all kind of notes with older designs.
I guess a bank would exchange them for current notes.
What I am trying to figure out is if they have any value beyond nominal value.
I really don't know much about numismatic, and would not know who to ask without getting ripped off.
Anyone can help?
A few examples:

Only face value unless they are silver or gold certificate bills. And rare misprint bills that made it past QC.
And some ?red? seal bills. ( made until the early 1960s.)

Agreed, face value for the four shown.

Oh well, any money is good money...
How about silver coins?

For instance there's a 1942 Walking Liberty (there's plenty more but I haven't had the chance to look into it yet).
According to the interwebs those are worth at least $7.80.
Where should I go to sell those ?
Any recommendations?

Also 1941 dime with a fascist symbol?
Silver coins are definitely more valuable.
Never realized that a young Liberty with a winged helmet was a fascist. I've always known them as Mercury dimes.

Not the liberty, the symbol on the other side, what we call in Italy "Fascio Littorio", originally a Roman symbol.

You might be able to find a prepper that would be interested in the old notes since they were printed before the magnetic ink and tracking strips...........

I would hang on to the silver coins. Silver is at a low right now. Link below is the spot price of silver.

So, with silver coins are we looking more at the intrinsic metal value than collector value?
I have looked at some online and they are definitely above nominal.
Any reputable coin shop I can bring them to?
I've always gone to Dave's Gold and Silver Exchange in Denver, 548 S. Broadway. There's a bigger shop a couple doors north, but Dave is more personable and honest. Small time vs big time.

I'd just sell them in the trading post section. Dealer is going to pay under market price and resell at a profit. I was going to sell some gold at a dealer and they were going to pay 25% less that spot.
How much silver do you have? I might be interested.

I'll send you a PM after I make an inventory.
Dave's is the best coin shop in the area but you'll do better selling them here.

Not the liberty, the symbol on the other side, what we call in Italy "Fascio Littorio", originally a Roman symbol.
Well dang, I went down the rabbit hole chasing the meaning.
It appears on the symbols for the US Senate and for Colorado.
A bundle of birch rods to beat the slaves, and an ax to kill them.
I learn something every day!

Also included 216 Dimes and 6 Nickels of various years (my eyes refuse any further strain).
They were refused by the Coinstar machine so I assume they are Silver, pre-1965.
Dimes and Nickels should be worth about $1.50 each (please do your research).
Selling as a lot only.

Okay, I am now confused.
You listed the coins as sold and then in the next post you posted a detailed list of coins available for offers.
Is this a new batch of coins or did the sale not go through?
If these are available, you might also try listing them in the Trading Post under Non Firearm Items.
