View Full Version : TOPGUN Maverick
Saw it today in IMAX. I enjoyed it, great flying scenes and very good 'character' actors.
It moved through the mushy crap pretty fast so, that's good and the story is unique.

OK... I saw it today. I loved the original. This one was just OK.
I've seen all the trailers and patiently waited for this movie. I'll say it...I was disappointed.
I know this was just a movie but some of the stuff was just over the top ridiculous. Without providing any spoilers:
1. The opening where he went on the test flight. Nope. Too silly, even for a movie.
2. Some of the one-liners carried over from the original were pretty good. Some others, while great in the original, just felt forced...like they built a scene just to use the phrase.
3. Too much chick flick content. WAY too much chick flick content. Reminded me of "Pearl Harbor"...2nd worst movie of all time right behind "The Thin Red Line". You know how you f**k up a movie about Pearl Harbor (OK...besides casting Ben Affleck in the lead)? Make it into a chick flick.
4. Expanding on #3...not enough of the flight scenes.
Having said that, most of the flight scenes were really good. Credit where due on that. Also liked the "Penny" angle since she was only mentioned in the original...but we never knew her.
So, that's it for me. I'd give it 3 (of 5) stars. It gets a solid 1.5 stars just for the scenes with Cruise's P-51.
Wife loved it. I asked her what she liked about it. She said because it was almost a chick flick. I rest my case.
Nice. The wife and I might go see it on Monday. If it has a chick flick vibe maybe she?ll enjoy it. Also, the original had a strong chick flick vibe so I would almost expect it for the sequel.
I've heard good things from reviewers I trust.
Was good to hear that it wasn't overtaken by 'the message' that has contaminated Hollywood.

Finally went and watched it. Mixed feelings about it.
Some of the jet scenes were pretty enjoyable and well done but the storyline felt kind of cobbled together and sort of jumped around kind of like they were trying to incorporate too many little sub stories within the story. I just felt the whole thing didn?t really flow well. Also, the way they did the female/romance part with no real back story was just odd and out of place.
Also, where the original movie had a somewhat believable storyline this one was just a little too far fetched and unrealistic.
I generally just enjoy movies for the entertainment value and this one was kind of hit or miss for me.
I?d say if you can watch it when it hits HBO or something it might be worth checking out. Not sure it?s worth the price of seeing it in the theater.

I give it 2 thumbs up. I really liked the opening 'montage' that showcased the deck crew and all the work they do to get those birds up and down. It was a little emo, but not over the top.
Saw it Saturday evening and must say I was entertained-the reason I watch films in the first place. The aerial scenes were fantastic, I found the story as believable, or not, as the original. Thought the casting was well done, especially enjoyed watching Monica Barbaro lol. Might even go see it again after a few weeks. Also this was the first time I had been in a theater since the pandemic, only about 50 folks which surprised me for a Saturday.
oops, double post apologies, not sure what"s going on with my wifi

I saw 'Top Gun' when it came out.... at the time I thought it was cheesy, though entertaining given the cold war was still 'hot'. And Kenny Loggins' 'Danger Zone' .......[facepalm]
'Hot Shots' was a much better movie....[A9]
Saw it yesterday with the family. Early, cheap tickets and used up the rest of the gift card. The dozen or so previews was a bit much, but the theater was clean, and only about a dozen people watching the movie.
The movie was okay, and probably worth the cheaper tickets, and the lack of other people in the theater for the early show.
Without spoilers, the two pivotal parts of the movie are almost impossible given the controls the .mil has. Even the later one in escape mode, very unlikely. Some cheesy parts, some good acting that really made you feel what the characters would have felt. Yes, the flying scenes were cool, and they did a good job of portraying the tension. The lack of cussing, sex and general debauchery were fine with me, but those who like the gratuitous, and or the new wokeness of Hollywood will pan it.
If cruise does "Evening of Thunder", "Laundering of Money" and "MockTails" I might just see them too, but probably not in the theater unless someone gives me another AMC giftcard.
Unless Leslie Nielsen makes a cameo appearance, I have no interest in seeing a movie with airplanes as a central character.
Wife and I saw it last night. We were entertained.
Spoilers ahead:
I thought the love interest portion was fine given they kept it a minimum and didn't drown us with backstory. The lack of returning characters from the original was fine by me. I was pleased to see the nameless, faceless bad guy reprise his role as the bad guy.
Some parts were cheesey and a bit much but overall, I enjoyed it.

I've had Iron Eagle on my list of movies to get for some time and I finally found (and bought) it on a recent trip to Kansas City.

I am a Fire Birds kinda guy.
Realism, actual real life aircraft maneuvers, top notch acting and it portrayed the Military in the most realistic way I have ever seen!
Saw TG Maverick tonight and I was pleasantly surprised. No movie now a days is perfect but I liked it. For two plus hours I was not think about all the dumb shit going on in the world

I watched the movie. I can remember all the flag level officers, and don't remember a General Debauchery!
