400 pound bear illegally enters Steamboat home.
Homeowner responds with 9 rounds of .40 S&W.
Bear is carried out feet first.
Let that be a lesson to all you scofflaw bruins! Don't mess with man, we have thumbs!
I don’t blame him one bit, but I also don’t believe him.
There is little chance that bear charged at him. When he was speaking it seems like he added that sentence to his story to assure he was clear that felt like he was acting in self defense.
I’d almost certainly have done the same thing, just spoken less.

I've seen plenty of hunting videos of bears getting shot by various things only for them to turn and charge whoever shot them. Getting shot makes them pissy...
Weird.
I didn?t think anyone still shot 40.
I would’ve had my door locked, just sayin

Mauldin said he's noticed the frequency of bear encounters in town this summer.
"There seems to have been a significant escalation of bears entering homes this summer that seems to be more prevalent than previous seasons," he said. ?It would be helpful, in my opinion, if CPW could escalate their efforts in trapping these bears.?
Fukkin moron, lock your door, you live in the bears hood. Instead of asking .gov to get involved and kick the bear out of his hood, be a good neighbor and discourage the bears from entering your home uninvited.

Instead of asking .gov to get involved ...
Okay, boomer.
You obviously don't understand that the government is here to protect us from all perils, all the time.
Jeez, listen to some NPR once in a while.

I'll repeat this as a PSA and I'm aware some of you have heard this before, common sense bear encounter precautions.
With the increasing news of Human/Bear encounters, a few things are encouraged. During dog walks or hiking, take along a Pepper spray product just in case, and wear some small bells on your gear or clothing that will signal your approach, bears do not like to be surprised!
The second thing is to recognize your surroundings. By observing bear "Scat' (turds), you might be able to ID them using dietary forensics.
Most Brown and Black bears will have remains of nuts and berries in their scat while Grizzly bear scat might have tiny bells in it, and it smells like pepper.

Barely newsworthy
...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

So 9 rounds, I bet he had a Glock 27 and he just mag dumped it. I wonder how many rounds it would have actually taken.

Clearly the homeowner was not a fan of the Bruins.
More proof nobody needs magazines with more than 10 rounds.

Ok, I?ll go run over there and hide now?

Steamboat has a lot of bears in town. I've been spending more time up there in the last year, but even so, I'm far from living there full-time. This being said, I've come within 25 feet of a bear three times in the last year. My condo isn't exactly on the fringes of anything... it's between the Walmart and Alpine Bank. I was carrying stuff from my car to the condo the first time and looked up to see a bear in the grass in front of my condo. I slowly backed up the stairs to my condo and stayed inside until he lumbered off.
The second time, one ambled across the road in front of me as I was merging onto Hwy 40 coming up the on-ramp from Mt. Werner Drive. The last time was about a month ago. My brother and I went out to dinner. We came out and there was a bear wandering around about 10 feet in front of his Suburban. In typical younger brother fashion, my brother wouldn't unlock the suburban doors until I was sufficiently in danger of being mauled. Gotta seriously consider removing him as the sole beneficiary in my Will.
I just accept the bear encounters as part of living in a mountain community. Bears just being bears. As others have said, we're invading their territory, not the opposite. After reading the article, I've decided to swap out the 9mm I keep at the condo in favor of a .40S&W!
Off topic: If you want to be sick to your stomach, take some time reading the Steamboat Pilot newspaper to see how completely freaking liberal Steamboat has become. Honestly, that's been the biggest surprise to me in the last year of property ownership up there. I figured the community would lean more to its farming, ranching, and rodeo roots. Pretty sad.

This thread is becoming unbearable!
I was talking with a CPW officer yesterday who said that Lyons is having a lot of bear problems. The late May storm damaged much of the wild berry crop. We're pretty resolute about keeping doors locked when we're inside. And I keep a shotgun loaded with rubber buckshot and double rubber ball rounds.
Here's capture from one of my yard cams of a young bear approaching our electric bear fence at 3 a.m. People of the night. Don't know if the bear contacted the fence. Another cam pointing that direction wasn't triggered by the bear.

Makes me wonder why you don't hear about bears in Craig.

Steamboat area is good habitat for bears, usually good food sources. Craig area has poor habitat for bears. Area east and northeast not terrible but west and northwest not very inviting to bears.

Oh Pooh.
I used to do a lot of work in homes in Steamboat, saw bears all the time. One was hanging out in the hot tub at one house I was working at, others in yards, garages. Saw a bear raiding a dumpster downtown at around midnight in January, that was a surprising one.
Also used to experience the same things while working in Aspen.. Leave a bar at midnight and run in to a bear on the sidewalk outside the bar.
The reality is that these mtn towns are full of outsiders that just don't get it.

Leaving a bar at midnight you're more likely to run into a cougar.
Sometimes I wonder what you'd do
If the swamp moved in on you?
Scratched on your screen, slipped down your waterspout
Tapped you on the shoulder and said "YOU move out!"
The last lines of the song "The Last Chant".
Jim Stafford wrote that about cities spreading out into the swamps in South East. I am often reminded of that when hearing about any people moving into rural areas and being surprised that the previous residents don't want to move along.
